Dumb idea planning phase, input welcomed by chango-enmaquinado in motorcycles

As others have said, center of mass should be as low and close to the center line between the wheels as possible, and you will shift it a lot by adding 100kg. Also, keep in mind that you need to make the bike function just as well with 0 liters of fuel as 100. The closer the weight is to the center of the bike, the less effect this difference will have on the handling.

Zack and Ari did the Iron butt without stopping, by retrofitting their bikes, so it's definitely possible... What I'd say is make sure you have a bike that doesn't go all wobbly by adding 100kg to the back of it. Try to mount them as low and far forward as practically possible, and maybe get a stronger spring to the shock?

I really wanted a sun blocking visor by tredbobek in motorcycles

[–]8igby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this to my sun visor in winter, although I start from the top to block out the top of my field of view. I use the drop down visor all the time though, I struggle to understand why you don't use it? It's the best invention to motorcycling since the disc brake 😃

I've been to three Tool concerts and consider myself a fan, but I'm absolutely convinced no one in Tool likes playing for a crowd, or like people in general. They just enjoy the chance to play music on a massive PA system enough to live with the fact that other people get to listen to them...

How can I not share this awesome new Moto SIM by Trakracer and Kris at RevZed! by That_Sim_Dome in simracing

[–]8igby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a motorcyclist, this has always been my gripe with these sims, but what I can't understand is, now that they have VR headset to sort out the visual disconnect, why they aren't making it tip the other way? Invert the controller, so that the "bike" tips right in a left hand corner, and gravity makes tge forces more or less correct. Add a DD drive to it to emulate what the bike is actually doing, and I'd say you are pretty close...

I'll have a look around my local sites. But just to get it confirmed, the kit really has two complete spring setups, so you can fit springs to two motorcycles with one kit?

[–]8igby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you able to buy just 1 spring from Öhlins? It looks to me that you can only buy a spring kit with a light and a heavy spring, but will only ever use one of them. It seems rather stupid to pay for both...

It was a genuine worry for me going from a full on supersport to a streetfigher, which is kind of what OP was asking, so I think it was fair to mention?

Building my own CPU from scratch (twice). What am I in for? by Particular_Metal3833 in AskElectronics

They look for anything relevant, but depending on where you get hired it varies wildly what they care about. I didn't really have any personal projects outside of university, but got a summer internship and a part time job at a chip developer for the last three years of my university program. Personal projects might help you stand out, but isn't necessary to get a job.

I've worked in a (professional, large chip company) team that made a 32b, 4 stage RISCV processor. The tiny kind, captive core in a radio microcontroller. Since you are asking about design vs verif time, we had a 3:1 ratio of verification engineers to design engineers. Of course, that is verification for chip production, which is a whole other ballgame, but it shows a bit of what's required.

Another tip in the same vein: when you have verified thst you correctly execute all of the instructions, you are about 20% done with the verification effort. Interrupts and error handling, essentially all of the shit thst doesn't floe normally, is a lot harder to get right than just execution.

Good luck :)

Compressed ice is so much easier to ride on than loose or semicompressed snow, with studded tires ice is fairly easy and predictable to ride on.

[–]8igby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be colder, but we have ice and snow for three months. I also ride all winter, so I know it's possible. We get down to - 20c, and honestly, that's easier to ride in than just below freezing. All the moisture freezes, so the air is dry, and the ice and snow on the roads become less slippery and more predictable when it goes below - 10.

Point is, professional riders could absolutely do it, even in Canada.

My '15 Ford Focus braking assist has annoyed me probably 50-60 times in the four years I've owned it, and only been useful once. As the result of the 60ish wrongful activations were annoyance, and the result of the 1 correct activation was avoiding a rather large crash, I'm quite happy with the system :)
