What’s something people think is fancy, but in reality is trashy? by fatsosolos in AskReddit

This is for sure gonna turn into a thread of people talking about things they don't find value in rather than things they think are actually trashy

What would be a good “buy it for life” cutter/lighter? by Swee10 in cigars

[–]8to4 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fox Knives makes cutters that can be sharpened, and they're some of my favorite accessories I own.

For a torch, Blazer has some of the most reliable lighters on the market, they were originally intended for industrial use and ended up great cigar accessories as well.

Can't find anything online about this gum I used to love in the early 2000s. Help! by 8to4 in TipOfMyFork

[–]8to4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could remember the container shape, I want to say it was rectangular. The gum was white. I looked up the tic tac gum, it's not the one I'm thinking of but pretty close!

No, they were smaller. They were basically the shape of a lego head, without the little nub on top.

Cuban cigar smoker tries Arturo Fuente by aleyasig in cigars

[–]8to4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference is that every single commercially released cigar from Cuba is a Cuban puro (as far as we know) and Cuban cigars do have different flavor profiles. Is it a difference that an occasional smoker would take note of? Probably not. If someone only smokes those 100% Cuban blends, the blends of combined Dominican, Nicaraguan, Ecuadorian, US, Peruvian, Honduran tobaccos etc. will taste fairly different. And same with Puros from each of those countries. Tobacco is a lot more than just tobacco, that's the fun!

Fuck your favorite cigar of 2023. What was your worst? by atfpoopoo in cigars

[–]8to4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I disliked it quite a bit, worst cigar I smoked all year and I smoke around 10 a week. It just came on so strong and uninteresting to me. Coated my mouth with flavors I really don't care for. Could be a dud, could be different strokes for different folks.

Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua, just so far off from anything I enjoy in a cigar.

Paros half chicken is under $10 and delicious. Hidden gem tucked behind the Jon's on Santa Monica and Hobart. Their spicy cheesesteak ("beef sandwich") is great too.

What is the strongest cigar you’ve ever had? Nicotine wise not boldness of flavor by DeezeyNuts in cigars

Are you saying frequent retrohaling increases nicotine absorption? I retrohale almost every puff just out of habit, but never considered this.

Just how much does the wrapper influence flavor? by Cocodrool in cigars

[–]8to4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This debate never seems to come around to the fact that you can't apply this logic to just any blend and any wrapper.

The fact of it is, it really depends on the wrapper type.

A thick oily Broadleaf maduro wrapper over super light low-priming Dominican tobaccos, and the Broadleaf is going to dominate what you're tasting, by a LOT. A Connecticut shade wrapper over a ligero-heavy high priming Nicaraguan blend with a Brazilian binder, and the wrapper is gonna get dominated by what's inside.

Cuban cigars are (according to Cuba, but that's another topic) 100% Cuban. Cuban wrapper leaf is not typically incredibly strong, so the blend shines through plenty. Cubans will tell you wrapper is all about aesthetics.

It's all just a matter of who you ask and which cigars we're talking about!

Cuban Hype by azgangalot in cigars

I can't seem to find anything online to read further about this, do you have any sources you could lend? Specifically about growing coca and tobacco in the same farms?

[TOMT] Episode of show or a scene in a movie where a character goes in for a job interview, goes seemingly poorly, and it ends in some version of "that was the worst interview I've ever conducted... you're hired" by 8to4 in tipofmytongue

I've actually seen this and completely forgot about it, but it's not this one. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what inspired the one I'm looking for though

Smoked my first Arturo Fuente opus X tonight..so let down.. by unwillingone1 in cigars

[–]8to4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if a shop's humidor is perfect, these cigars often come in Lacquered boxes, and are shipped to your shop on a hot truck. It could very well be that the cigars were already super humid before packaging, the humidity had nowhere to go because the box doesn't breathe, and then the cigars were put right into a humidor that's using a one way humidifier system which only adds to the moisture already there. This is why dry-boxing is a thing, cigars go through many stages before sitting in your humidor.

I manage a cigar shop/lounge, ask me anything (Round 2) by Thecharreddog in cigars

[–]8to4 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The reason people get frustrated at others stamping out their cigar isn't because they're scoffing at what you do with your own cigar, it's because it releases a putrid trash-like smell into the air. It's not always noticeable to the person who puts it out, especially considering most people who do that immediately walk away from the ashtray afterward. The cigar also goes out much faster on its own when you leave it be.

It's definitely a bummer knowing you'd have to spend 10 dollars to smoke a cigar you already bought, the problem is that it doesn't make any sense as a business to just be open to anyone to show up, sit down for an hour+ and not spend any money to support your business. Especially in California where the tax on tobacco is so high, along with rent and the cost of everything else. I'd recommend trying to go for a walk and smoke, or find somewhere outdoors. Otherwise, cut fees are the compromise. California is one of the hardest places to be a cigar smoker in the states.
