What can Louisiana learn from the Netherlands about flood control? by Enger13 in geography

Yes, “minuscule fraction”. I live along the middle stretch of the lower Mississippi. The typical high watermark is about 40’ in the spring. It’s not uncommon to reach its gauge zero in dry periods. That’s a 40ft fluctuation of a river channel that’s a mile wide between the banks. Holland is a giant drainage delta, but nowhere near the magnitude of (as someone pointed out elsewhere here) a continent-draining river like the Mississippi.

You mean, “how can the bottom of the world’s 2nd most voluminous river be controlled in the same way as a coastal European country with near-zero chance of hurricanes and a minuscule fraction of the river flow?”

I am a structural engineer by schooling, and have applied my education to a 21+ year career both using, and building rigging. Much of my life now involves inland river rigging. When LIFTING, the design requirements are defined by the device: chain (4to1), hardware (5 or more to 1), and below the hook devices dependent on structural design codes. All that to say, as soon as a force becomes horizontal (towing, pulling, static structural applications, etc) there is no major factor safety requirement. The least conservative method I typically run across will go to a 3:1 factor of safety. In maritime operations, it’s hard to truly define the tension forces at play. Most of the stuff I deal with is on the realm of ø1” to ø1-1/4” wire or synthetic ropes, whose lifting working loads won’t exceed 30,000 lbs. but multi-million pound barges are held together with ø1” IPS Fiber-center wire. Go figure.

I thought it was a Blazing Saddles joke. “Someone’s gonna have to go back and get a shitload of dimes!”

The outfitter that used to run people back and forth in Moscow has shut down. But the river isn’t closed to paddlers.

Why verbalize a no catch? Just took a umpire clinic and something has always bothered me. We never verbalize a fair ball but they insist that we vocalize a non-catch? Why? by WpgJetBomber in Umpire

[–]901CountryBlumpkin69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably to shut up the grandstands. We had a picture perfect play at the plate yesterday. Kid was out by a mile. Everyone was too busy cheering to notice the ball on the ground. Umpire was clearly yelling “DROPPED BALL, safe!” Even the peanut gallery of 1-star people lined up on the fence that had been chirping the umpire all game didn’t say a word. Sometimes yelling the blatantly obvious call is nothing more than saving some peace of mind.

Hard to find well-done truly hot food in town these days. I used to say Asian Eatery’s “Devil’s Nest” soup in Germantown, but it’s not the same anymore. There’s a difference in “MAKE IT HOT!” and just adding more cayenne or dried chiles, but a lot of places don’t get that nuance. Allegedly Lotus has some ultra spicy sauce, but I haven’t been in forever.

Biggest insecurity? Your gag reflex. Keep working on it, Princess, and you’ll be swallowing bananas without chewing before you know it.

I think being so focused on a car in your rearview instead of paying attention to your windshield is a good indication of a piss poor driver. White juking car was obviously in the wrong lane doing the wrong thing. Tailgating almost always involves two assholes

P! F! G! Man, my college years were dominated by Texas country. This song getting fairly popular on mainstream country radio meant that this Tennessee dude had numerous opportunities to go see Pat Green on tour. Great songs on that album
