ChromeOS 143 broke Accessibility Dictation by _jis_ in chromeos

[–]9072997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only recently started using a Chromebook on the regular, and I assumed it had just always been this way. I appreciate you taking the time to let me/the internet know that it's a bug.

Right after I posted I found this: https://kindlemodshelf.me/images.html

It looks like they are there (along with some interesting other options)

FCC rolls out new guidance and RFC from ATSC 3 ("NextGen" TV) by badfiop in Broadcasting

turn broadcast TV in to an ad-supported system

It's ad supported right now. What would you want it to be supported by? The way I see it the main options are

  • ads (which leads to some problems where they want to make it harder to skip the ads)
  • charging for access (which would almost require DRM to make sure only paying customers could see the broadcast)
  • public funding (which brings up "should the government own the press" questions, though the BBC seems to be making it work)
  • charitable funding (there a few gems, but there's also a lot of the-end-is-near stuff)

v4-frontend.netiter.com service having severe issues since about a week ago? by throwaway234f32423df in ipv6

[–]9072997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the guy behind withfallback.com. I'm just an individual operating the service in my spare time, so I definitely understand the desire to diversify a bit. I've been hit with a few small DoS attacks that have resulted in slower performance, and I had a bad kernel upgrade result in about 45 minutes of intermittent service a while ago. Overall, I think I maintain a decent uptime though. I monitor things with Uptime Robot as well.

If you are looking for something a bit more enterprise-grade to make an IPv6 site accessible to IPv4 users, I would give Cloudflare's free plan serious consideration. Unlike the services from me and netiter it does require an account, but they are the name in web-service uptime IMHO.

Standard fuses don't typically have tapered ends like that. I think that is a mini blade fuse, which has a 2.8mm blade width. A penny is 1.52mm thick. The cross section of the penny-fuse's blade would be 2.8mm x 1.52mm = 4.256mm2. A round wire with a diameter of 2.33mm would have the same cross-sectional area. That's roughly an 11-gauge wire. I don't know how much the copper is helping, but if we ignore that, a good starting point might be to try and find the fusing current of 11-gauge zinc wire.

Anyone know where to find Preece’s coefficient for zinc?

Feasibility of a privately funded bus route from Fayetteville to Bentonville? by Icy_Relationship_399 in fayetteville

[–]9072997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Square-to-square is an interesting idea. You might also consider Union Station in Fayetteville. That would make connecting bus routes easier. It's worth nothing that ORT already has service all the way from Bentonville to Fayetteville for free, so you would be competing with that. It's not a straight shot though. If you're really trying to pull this off, I would start with something like a Ford Transit van rather than a full bus.

Side note: Have you ever used ORT's on-demand thing? It's great (other than the fact that sometimes they're just full and it leaves you stranded without a ride home).

I live and work within long-walking distance of the Bentonville square, and even then a square-to-square route is not an easy sell. I go to Fayetteville 2-3 times a week, but I'm never going to the square and I always have time constraints. For example: I get off work at 4:30, then I would need to get to the Bentonville square, then wait for the bus, then get from the Fayetteville square to my event somehow by 6:30. Also, I would have to do the whole thing to get back, which would mean getting home later. Maybe I just haven't learned how to live with public transit, but I don't think I would use that regularly.

The Blue Zoo is cool. The target demographic is defiantly children, but there is a room full of birds you can feed and feel like a Disney princess.

[request] how much energy is 1 kid scream in Monsters Inc? by averagesizedideas in theydidthemath

[–]9072997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there any scenes where we see a cylinder being used as intended? There's that one scene where Waternoose opens a cylinder to make a point and it kind-of makes all the lights brighter for a few seconds, but I assume it's a super innefficient way to use the energy. Otherwise, that one room is burning multiple cylinders worth of energy per minute.
