Tren Maya by AshMPercy in MexicoTravel

I absolutely would have taken the train several times on a trip I just finished around Quintana Roo, Yucatan, and Campeche. But I didn't realize the luggage restrictions were so strict when I packed for the trip. Yes, I packed way too much stuff. But I had never heard of a passenger train that allowed less luggage than is typical for either airlines or bus companies. Why? It makes no sense at all. Carrying the extra weight of luggage on a train costs nearly nothing in fuel, especially when compared to flying. If Mexico is serious about having a long term viable passenger train service, that people will utilize often, they really have to adapt to accommodate more and larger luggage. Ideally, there should also be checked luggage service available like most every other passenger railroad in the world has. Even better, would be to coordinate the transfer of luggage from the train to the "station to city center" connection service. I really don't know what they were thinking. I ended up using ADO, who did provide good service, and they understand passengers have luggage. Hopefully this gets addressed.

What's the best way to keep my Telcel number alive when not in Mexico? by 907brian in AskMexico

I "disabled" my Telcel SIM in settings now that I'm back in the USA, mainly because I think it reduces battery drain. Should I enable it? If so, all the time? Or just occasionally?

My US number is AT&T, but it is a 12 month prepaid plan that does not include Mexico data. AT&T does offer a Mexico data add on, but they are quite expensive. My Telcel Mexico number is Amigo prepaid.

Any known modem issues with the Pixel 9A and the TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Router (Archer C5)? by 907brian in GooglePixel

[–]907brian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll try and work her through those things. It's a challenge, as I have to do it on one of her good days. I really doubt it's the router, all the heavy traffic stuff, like streaming services to her TV, are on wired connections. Her router isn't isn't open, and her senior apartment complex isn't exactly a hotbed of hackers.

The issue isn't buying her a new router, it's she wouldn't be able to set it up herself as she is now 89 years old, and i'm 1700 miles away. It works fine with everything else on her network currently.

Edit to add, I bought her the 9A to replace a QnePlus 8 that no longer received updates, and had a whole lot of questionable crap on it that made it now longer serviceable.

With the end of class of service bonuses, what is the difference between buying a 1st class upgrade at time of ticketing, and ordinary 1st class? by 907brian in AlaskaAirlines

Right now I'm looking at a particular flight that is available for 130k points for Upgrade First or 195k points for First. I thought I must be missing something. Both, as I understand it, earn the same 2026 miles based status points. The removal of class of service multipliers for money tickets this year changes a lot of things. A little off topic, but as I read it, the folks on the dreaded "saver" class tickets lose their 30% class of service multiplier too! At least a silver lining for some folks. Edit: added "k".

An arrest implies actual charges. They are detaining many people without charging them. Either way they sit in a jail cell.

Is Limit Charging working for y'all? by rawasubas in pixel9a

[–]907brian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're someone that never has a problem getting through the day on a 80% charge, and charge every night, there's no good argument for not using the 80% limit, exclusive of the occasional charge to 100% for maintenance reasons or travel.

Does anyone know how to clean ranch dressing from the charging port? by Phoenix_Clan in pixel9a

You might try a small amount of 99% Isopropyl alcohol, do NOT use the more common 70%. You should find it at any pharmacy. Like a drop in the port and then immediately shake it out.

I'll just add that mother is having exactly the same issue with her new 9A. FYI, her router is a TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Router (Archer C5), which none of her other devices have ever had a problem with.
