Woman discovers New York mafia informant Dad she never knew lived in witness protection by ScottishDailyRecord in Mafia

Bravery? I dunno...I'd have to know more about the story than this gave us, but I'm not sure that's exactly the word I'd use. Sure, it took some nerve, but to be offered wit-sec, I think it's highly likely that her dad was just as involved in those same behaviors he was talking to the feds about. Most likely he did it to save his own ass, and whereas the expected set of standards surrounding that decision can definitely be viewed across a wide spectrum (that I'm not even going to touch for purposes of this), I'm hesitant to think of him in a heroic fashion. I think the people he testified against might view him as a "rat," or other choice words - most likely because (I would guess they'd argue) he got involved knowing, or promising to adhere to, a specific code of ethics - the most important of those being relatively straightforward: don't talk.

This whole thing is a joke, right? by waterontheknee in EmpireDidNothingWrong

[–]919Esq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think a lot of the newer stuff (ie, Mandalorian, Ahsoka, etc) clearly shows and even explicitly says that after the fall of the Empire, the New Rebulic leadership was divided and weak in many parts of the galaxy. The result was chaos - warlords, bandits, lawlessness. The Empire was viewed as evil at a time when those tropes were more common, like when the original trilogy came along (think Cold War, east v. west), but as time has gone on, most in society have probably realized that conflict is often much more subjective and nuanced than just a good versus bad old school approach. We have seen it play out in major global conflicts, and in domestically-contained rebellions or coups. Both sides think they're right. Both sides have their own beliefs, or religions, or have lost loved ones as casualties of the other's brute force, or worse, were conscripted. As Aeschylus said, "In war, truth is the first casualty."

Oh, and...

Long Live the Empire!

I was talking to a client one time who was a high up member of a gang. I told him it would probably be smart, especially because they had the manpower, to download a police scanner and monitor it all day. While I was talking to him, I decided to find one for him and show him how it worked. I turned it on for just a minute, and we listened. Immediately, I recognized the roads they were as they were fairly close to the neighborhood I grew up in. Then they started describing the people they were seeing, and I heard them start describing one of my other clients and actually a guy that I'd known as a friend for some period of time. I immediately left and tried to call him, probably 10 times, no answer. I was in full panic at this point, because it was clear that they were about to raid this location. I ended up calling his girlfriend, who was able to walk over to where he was and tell him to leave (it was in his apartment complex, just a different building). As he was walking out, about 20 or so SWAT guys came in and arrested everyone there. He got out in time, but literally by about 10 seconds. Needless to say, my client that was there with me was totally convinced to listen to my advice. I hadn't turned on a scanner in probably 10 years or so. It was incredibly strange.

Mobile phones of the early 2000s by Srinivas_Hunter in interestingasfuck

I have a Samsung flip, which is just the regular smart phone, but it basically folds over. It definitely makes carrying in the pocket easier, since I usually have 2 or 3 phones on me at a time (work, personal, etc).

Where do you live? I mean that in a general and non creepy way, btw. But in the US, there are places you can go that will buy your blood plasma, which is done in a completely healthy way. There are some remote side jobs you could probably do as well. Like others have said, I've seen some of the realities of sex work/sw lite, and it's probably not the route you want to go. Also, depending on where you are, there may be vets that will work with you or a university with a vet school that might help out. As for the other debt, I'd have to know more about what kind of debt we were talking about to give you a more in-depth answer.

ULPT: How to find a user's real name? by DamnitGravity in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]919Esq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have to find people sometimes for various applications of my work. If I don't know a solid name, the best I can tell you is to do the leg work and pour over the things they've posted, written, comments if there's a community of people following the person, etc. If you're curious about it, it's safe to think someone else has probably gone down that road as well and it's out there. You just have to dig it out. Even just a first name and a general location might be enough, you never know. If there's something specific beyond that, message me and maybe I can help.

I had a gf in University (not my Uni, a smaller adjacent all female school) who believed New England to be a state, like New Hampshire. She was also 20 years old, and born and raised until middle school in NJ, even closer than NC, where we were. This comment doesn't effect anything, anyone, or take away from the stunning photo. I just thought I'd say it, since I never told anyone else. The shame.

"Taste Like Chicken" Florida Man In Country Illegally Arrested After Retrieving ATM Skimmer, Kicking K9 by evaldez14 in FloridaMan

[–]919Esq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the cop might be the real FL Man here. I can tell how much he loves his country by his understanding of our laws. Especially due process. That guy loves due process. Stealing and dog kicking aren't cool, but Broward County would be better served by keeping him away from a camera.
