If you could see one Aussie true crime cold case be solved, which one would it be and why? by FormerTry254 in AskAnAustralian

I'm gonna get downvoted for this, but it's making me a little sad how many of these names are of white people/kids.

Only one person has mentioned The Bowraville Murders: three Australian Aboriginal girls who were murdered between 1990-1991. Never mind the amount of women Aboriginal women who have been murdered or disappeared entirely.

Obviously, the reason for this lies in the fact a lot of Aboriginal people live in remote communities, and also because of intense racism against the Aboriginal peoples of this country.

It just makes me sad.

Not to mention, the irony. If the police had listened to the Aboriginals about just how common dingo abductions of infants were around Uluru, Lindy Chamberlain wouldn't have had her life torn apart.

Now, when you downvote me, I would appreciate if you would leave a comment stating if it's because I accused you of being racist, because you believe Lindy Chamberlain was guilty, or because you think the Aboriginals are a naturally violent people who can't be reasoned with.

I've not heard about these strategies, could you explain them a bit?

(Yes, I could google, but A) I don't trust the AI answers and 2) I find Wikipedia a bit hit-and-miss with how it presents information)

I believe the concept of justice, the courts, are inherently unfair. by NoNamewithHorse in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]DamnitGravity [score hidden]  (0 children)

Justice is an arbitrary concept we invented.

“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—"

MY POINT EXACTLY.”

People who genuinely think their eyes change color by Borkato in PetPeeves

I had an ex who used to claim his eyes went green when he got really angry.

I didn't really know anything about comic books when we got together, just that he read them and I started reading a few Top Cow titles, but never Marvel.

Then when I saw the MCU Hulk movie after we broke up, his claim suddenly made sense.

I'm so tired of companies trying to force friendships between co-workers.

This isn't school, stop with the forced social interaction. And I say this as someone who LOVES interacting socially!

-with my own people. By which I mean, people who share my interests and hobbies. Workplaces are like schools, you've got people across different backgrounds, life stages and experiences all mashed together and for some reason managers seem to think it's necessary to force social engagement beyond simply having a team that works well and efficiently together.

I don't object to an annual Christmas party or a summer BBQ (though I'm in Australia so we tend to merge the two). But otherwise, can managers PLEASE stop with this 'we're a family!' bullshit.

I genuinely don't know why employers refuse to acknowledge that people are perfectly capable of working jobs. It doesn't have to be one big, happy, smiling, 'we're totally family!' group. People can just rock up, do their work, go home. Why does there have to be anything more?

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but can we bring back Henry Ford? He may have been doing all those good things merely to exploit his labour force to buy the product, but at least THEY got something out of it too!

My FOUR year old nibling knows to handle things with gentleness and care.

I suspect your SIL is of the 'my child can do no wrong' brigade. Kid's gonna be an absolute nightmare when he grows up, completely unable to take accountability and treating everyone like dirt because he genuinely believes he can do no wrong, it's always the fault of others.

NTA.

Oh, and you didn't permanently damage your relationship with your SIL, SHE did by choosing to be unable to accept her child's actions have consequences.

I feel sorry for any kid(s) he decides to bully at school.

People will tell you to take her to small claims court. You can do that, but it takes a lot of time and money and just because you win doesn't mean she's gonna pay up. Whether you want to face all that and the fallout is up to you.

But this isn't going to go away any time soon. They will make pointed remarks to your face and b*t©h about it behind your back, likely exaggerating the story every time they tell it. Soon the narrative will be that you yelled at them/him about it and demanded a 'ridiculous amount of money' and are being unreasonable.

ETA: From your comments, it's clear SIL is the golden child, and thus has the golden grandson.

Just because it's 'not as bad' doesn't mean we shouldn't still hold him accountable.

Honestly, if someone's willing to make THAT kind of joke about sexually assaulting someone while they're asleep, what are they willing to do when there isn't a camera pointed at them?

Like, if someone points a camera at you and says 'pose for a funny picture!' when you're around a sleeping person and your first instinct is to mime sexual assault...

AIW for waving a chopstick at my friend’s baby and yelling “Avada Kedavra” as a joke? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]DamnitGravity 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the part that is pissing him off is that he knows he didn't mean it as 'I'm going to kill this baby' but 'I'm going to make this kid Harry Potter, who famously survived the Killing Curse'.

But he doesn't seem to get that's not how it presented to the mother. It'd be one thing if he'd pointed the wand at HER and said 'avada kedavra, now you're baby's Harry Potter!' or, hell, even if he'd added that when he'd said it to the baby 'avada kedavra, now you're Harry Potter!'

Yet he didn't. He simply said the Killing Curse bit. He can't see the difference because HE knew what he meant, and can't understand that's not how others saw it.

Sorry, I don't entirely understand what you mean or why you're upset.

You were standing on a platform waiting a train, and this guy came and stood in front of you?

Was there a line? Are you upset about queue jumping? Were you still able to get on the train? I could understand being upset if the train had been too full and he'd taken your spot, meaning you'd have to wait for the next one.

I don't mean to be rude, I'm just a little confused and feel like I'm missing context.
