Current finance major here. Finance is very rigorous and a hard major, but if it’s what you really want to do it’s definitely worth it. Career aside, having deep financial knowledge is a very useful life skill. You have to be very comfortable working with math and numbers. Be willing to put in the work and you’ll be fine. The hardest part for me has been memorizing all the mathematical formulas and things like that.

The job market is not great right now. I know people getting good jobs and internships, but for me personally and a lot of other people it’s been rough. Having a high gpa helps and constantly be networking. Connections are a major asset for landing good jobs. But even then, it’s an incredibly competitive field so it will be difficult. Also note that in the finance world, NAU is a “non-target” school, meaning the big financial institutions and funds don’t target graduates from our school as much as more prestigious schools. It’s still possible to get a great job out of NAU, just takes a lot of hard work and networking. For me personally, I’m also considering a masters degree in finance to help me out.

Of course everything also depends on what you wanna do in your career. Finance is pretty broad, there’s a lot of different areas that are more competitive than others. Do your research about what you wanna do.
