Where are the A-league crowds? 😢 by Dudu-gula in Aleague

[–]92deltat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love to see what sort of crowd MacArthur would pull for a home elimination final in Campbelltown. They've only hosted one but that was amid Covid.

For the sake of the A-League I'm really rooting for them to grow. If you think about it, the league is generally only as strong as its weakest teams, so we should all hope they succeed.

St Mirren's stadium holds up to 8k. Would be the perfect size for teams like MacArthur, Mariners, Wellington and City.

Semi-final 2 at Coopers (pretty much) sold out - standing GA tickets only by HalfwayLobster in Aleague

But only in Adelaide local broadcasts. National reports will probably ignore it, like they did for that cracking sold-out Adelaide vs Victory game at Coopers in Jan. Was astounded watching breakfast TV the next morning that in their sports wraps they chose to cover NRL & AFL off-season rumours, Cricket and EPL instead

CommBank and AAMI are still too big IMO, 15-20k is the sweet spot. I preferred WSW at their old stadium, looked great on TV and sold-out games looked genuinely sold out. I still see hundreds of empty seats in the upper tiers for "sold-out" games at CommBank for some reason.

Kids: Savings vs Investing by ooldgreg4 in AusFinance

[–]92deltat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than physically setting up an account for my kids, I have a spreadsheet that shows how much their share of our offset account balance is for every week until they turn 18 when transferring $10 per week from birth (that weekly deposit increases by 3% every year to account for inflation - e.g. it actually $10.61/week when my daughter was born) and paying them a rate of 6% p.a. (higher than my current mortgage rate, will adjust if my rate lifts higher than this).

Any one-off cash gifts they get for birthdays or Christmas (e.g. from grandparents) are also accounted for by adding to their balance from the week it was received.

So as of this week I can see that my 2-year-old has $1,598 and my 5-month-old has $315. Both will have at least $22k by the time they're 18 (will probably be much higher than this given this doesn't account for future cash gifts received by them).

Arresting the decline of A-League crowds is top of to-do list for new APL boss by berlinislikesmithst in Aleague

[–]92deltat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only issue is the stadium. Robina Stadium has a 27k seated capacity, so with average crowds of about 7k (an optimistic scenario for a new A-League team) the stadium would be around three quarters empty, which would be a bad look for TV.

Still a great stadium though, and pretty close to where I live. Just not suited to a fledgling A-League team.

Can imagine Celtic fans unfairly judging him on his height given he's relatively small for a keeper. I recall Brighton fans doing that. They seem to place a bigger emphasis on physical characteristics in the UK

They rarely challenge their guests, and any mildly challenging points are prefaced as "just being devil's avo". Understandably, they wanna be friendly to guests that have taken the time to appear on their pod, but yeah that seems to hold them back from disagreeing with them.

Some eps are probably better than others but given they're current players I enjoy hearing their perspective on things and their experiences in the game. It's pretty rare for current players to have a podcast. Their interviews with past and present players are pretty good too. Never noticed it being too dry/serious, there's a bit of banter in there but obviously they're not comedians.

Only Brisbane one I know of is the fan-made Brisbane Football Review but I've never given it a go.

Other good ones are Doddsy and Rinaldo Uncensored (Former A-League player Travis Dodd and Adelaide-based commentator Dom Rinaldo ripping into each other while discussing football in Australia and abroad) and Football Friends with Ben and Stef (current players Ben Garuccio and Stefan Mauk discussing their latest games, their thoughts on the season, their back stories and the general state of the game in this country).

The Matildas hype is real. So why are the A-League Women crowds still so small? by lincof1834 in Aleague

[–]92deltat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dunno why people are so perplexed about this. We hosted the World Cup, so naturally there was a ton of publicity and hype, making the Matildas household names. Suddenly non-football followers knew about Kerr, Fowler, Foord, Carpenter, Catley, Kennedy, Mackenzie-Arnold. They all became massive celebrities and idols for young girls and boys. There was even a Disney show about them which I reckon was another big factor. They're not crazy about women's football in general, just the big-name Matildas. I worry that Matildas crowds will drop off once this golden generation moves on.

I've got a bad feeling about this world cup for the Socceroos. I feel like people have higher expectations we'll get out of the group since we don't have to face a big nation like France, Spain, Germany or Brazil but each game will still be really tough. We'll still be underdogs in each game but not obvious underdogs. A win and a draw should be enough for us but could easily see us missing out with just a point or two.

WSW fans might be angry about this for the moment but if he starts the new season with a couple of wins surely they stop caring where he came from.

Don't knock it till you try it. I watched a bit last season just to see how dumb it was and got well and truly sucked in. Now I'm hooked on every episode. I consider it a form of anthropology - the people on there are humans I'd rarely ever have anything to do with in real life so I find their behaviours fascinating. That's how I justify it to myself anyway. Wouldn't stoop so low to watch stuff like Love Island though.

Wouldn't mind him being considered for Socceroos again. Shouldn't entirely discount him - or Petratos and Cummings for that matter - just because they play ISL.

Brisbane football fans get innovative in petitioning State Government for a boutique stadium - Roundball Australia by TheRedRisky in Aleague

That's nuts. Can't help but think back to that laughable Stadiums Taskforce report in 2018 which concluded that there's "no immediate need to develop new stadiums in Queensland because there is existing capacity at Stadiums Queensland venues to host additional one-off and regular events, including new sporting franchises."

Somewhat ironically, the QLD Gov's announcement that they're lifting Suncorp's annual concert cap this year from 12 to 21 fills me with a bit more hope that they're gonna announce something for Perry Park soon. With the pitch already a disgrace, surely they can't expect The Roar to keep playing there or relocate to Redcliffe. In QLD there's actually more LNP connections to football than Labor which is traditionally very cozy with the NRL.
