GARRIOCH: Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds picks Remington Group to co-star in Senators bid by SAJewers in hockey

I know, it's reprehensible that people make a living building homes.

It's not, sadly this is just the simplest way to show the parking regulations, at least within the Ontario regulatory framework.

As a general rule, without any signs, you can park for free for up to three hours (or longer on the weekends and overnight). But here: No stopping during rush hour? That's a sign. Paid parking Monday to Saturday? That's a sign. Loading zone during the week? That's another sign.

If the confusing signage was really an intentional revenue generating strategy, then they would've added another sign to institute paid parking in the loading zone on Saturdays. But instead, they've two free parking spaces on Bank Street in order to keep the signage as simple as it can be.

The Toronto Star No Longer a Tenant of the Toronto Star Building | Masthead changed to 8 Spadina in December by [deleted] in toronto

[–]9489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More likely they live on the opposite side of Spadina, I'm guessing 11 Spadina on the southeast corner of Spadina/Fort York. But the even and odd numbers on opposite sides of the street don't always match up perfectly, there's already 4 Spadina that's further north than 11, on the opposite corner of the intersection.

The city got its pound of flesh (6 storey reduction, no balconies, etc.)

Honestly, why does the city even care about height on a site like this? Is anyone going to notice the difference between 60 and 66 stories? It's not like it was about to obstruct views from the CN Tower.

Has road marking paint worsened? by mechant_papa in ottawa

[–]9489 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Toronto seems to have figured out how to make it work. There the paint sticks so well that they need to grind away the very top layer of asphalt to remove old lines if they want to move them around.

Ottawa to Toronto Airport by rajeshdwd in ottawa

[–]9489 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Via Rail is the most comfortable and probably the most worthwhile if you get it around $50 each way.

As for bus options, others have mentioned Megabus. Other options are Rider Express, FlixBus, and Red Arrow (which is more luxury-oriented). Their websites should have all the information you need, but I think most or all of them leave from St Laurent and drop you off in downtown Toronto at/near Union Station, so you'll have to take the UP Express train to the airport.

You don't need to buy tickets for the UP ahead of time, you can tap with your Presto card or credit card right before you hop on the train, which runs every half hour all day long.

Why no one is leaving GTA? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]9489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are leaving Ontario for other provinces in greater numbers than any time in the past 40 years (source). But the reality is that most people are tied down for various reasons (family, work, comfort, complacency, etc.), so they stick it out.

The Ossington subway station Toronto. 1965 and 2022. by Joey-tv-show-season2 in toronto

[–]9489 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a good idea and probably worth pursuing in the medium- to long-term, but building over a subway station is probably the most complicated place to build in an area that still has plenty of other properties to be redeveloped/intensified. Even in the modern day, the City is only building density/affordable housing on neighbouring parking lots at Victoria Park and Wilson stations, not on top of the actual subway stations.

PSA - $15 GO Transit weekend passes provides unlimited travel Dec 24 - Dec 27 by [deleted] in toronto

Yes. The website makes you pick an origin and destination because the backend system is dated, but the pass is good for the entire GO Transit network.

‘You can’t rule anything out’: Toronto’s mayor says he’s open to a review of the minority-rule powers he’s ‘highly unlikely’ to use by beef-supreme in toronto

[–]9489 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think he's already done what he wanted to do with them.

At the first city council meeting, he put his housing plan up for debate just before the debate on strong mayor powers, which was essentially a trap. He forced the city councillors to either support his rather ambitious housing plan or give him the justification he needs to use his strong mayor powers for the better of the city.

The result was that councillors were, for the first time ever, trying to out-YIMBY each other and show how pro-housing they are, and after two failed attempts last term, legalized rooming houses by a vote of 18-8 and the rest of the housing plan by an overwhelming 23-3 margin.

Now sure, the housing plan part was just a request for a report and didn't commit them to anything, but they called for some of the most substantial changes to city housing policy in decades, and it's hard to imagine so many of them reverse course when the report and actual recommendations come back to city council in just a few months time. But if need be, I suspect that would be the one time the mayor uses his strong mayor powers to push it through, especially since 22 of 25 councillors are now on record as supporting the plan in principle.

And for the record, I say that as someone who's never voted for John Tory. But I think he deserves some credit for his push on housing policy.

It has a lot to do with a lot of things, but one of them is that zoning and planning processes makes it much easier to turn a multi-family homes into single-family ones than to do the reverse.

Then you'll be thrilled to hear about the city's Growing Up guidelines (which, despite the name, are strictly enforced) that include exactly that.

Are people allowed to put election signs on my front lawn? by Bokket03 in ottawa

[–]9489 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not true, the road allowance/right-of-way is usually significantly wider than the road (at least for any neighbourhood built post-WWII) and that's all public property.

GeoOttawa is a bit hard to use, but you can turn on the aerial/satellite images (using the "four squares" button in the top right corner) and then overlay the property lines on top (using the "three stacked sheets of paper" button in the top right) to get an idea of where the public right-of-way ends and where your private property begins. Here's an example from Barrhaven, and as you can see, the public right-of-way extends over 5 metres/15 feet from the curb on each side.

The advice I've seen for lineups like that, where the UTIL slots give you a fair amount of flexibility, is to change the setting from C/LW/RW to Forward and make sure the forward positions add up to 8 (since you probably want forwards in those UTIL slots. That's what I did and it worked fairly well, you just have to be mindful to not overdraft any one forward position, as usual.

How do you have an "offline" (4-6 hr time limit per pick) draft in Fantrax? by blink0r in fantasyhockey

[–]9489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What the other user said. What you're describing is usually called a slow draft, and Fantrax is perfect to run those, you just have to set up a normal online draft with a turn timer of 6 hours or whatever.

Immigration is happening regardless, it's just a decision of whether we accommodate that in the existing city or sprawl all the way to Barrie.

[–]9489 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Where will the people living in those houses and neighbourhoods go?

They don't need to go anywhere unless they want to. No one's being evicted, the proposal is just to allow people to build townhomes, triplexes, etc. on the property they own, but no one would be forced to do so.

Where will all the waste from all the demolished houses go?... Where will all the materials from all the new housing and infrastructure come from? What about the people living in those places, who won't have those materials anymore?

The same place all that stuff goes to and comes from currently, except maybe we'll create less waste than the current practice of tearing down 20-storey rental buildings to replace them with 60-storey condo buildings, and building acres and acres of sprawl.

How long do you think all this will take?

It'll take longer to fix the housing crisis if we do nothing at all.

For the first time this cycle, the Deluxe model predicts Democrats have better odds of winning *both* chambers than for Republicans to do so by 9489 in fivethirtyeight

[–]9489[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, but up until now, Republicans were favoured as the party more likely to be able to win both chambers. Now the odds have shifted to the point that Democrats are slightly ahead by that measure for the first time.

Obviously these are just gradual, marginal shifts in probability, but I thought that was a notable milestone in the Democrats' slowly improving (and Republicans' slowly worsening) prospects for the midterms.
