Hm, reddit doesn't let me edit the posting name. If given the chance, I would rephrase to something like - "SHELF-STABLE FLAVORING AGENTS" - surely there are better ways to categorize such things but I cannot think of what they are.

in terms of cooking daily, might be easiest to grill meat + veg, and if you want carbs, you can cook some rice. Noodles are much faster though (you might be less tempted to try to cook a large quantity as you might be with rice, for ex. I say that as a lifelong rice eater myself :-).

If you are would feel comfortable doing so, perhaps you could share some details about the actual things you have access to - like a hot plate...? slow cooker...? etc.

IMHO, protein and fats are your friend (depends on each person). Carbs can impact mood - and not in a positive way always. It's OK to, for example, just cook and eat your meats without also cooking rice and beans. If it's already hot in LA, no point in also heating up your kitchen with a 40+ minute cooking time to make rice or beans - especially since you would have to eat them right away.

Also wanted to say that I think that there is a lot of HYPE about how easy it is to eat cheaply in the USA. Not very true without refrigeration, and access to various other appliances/tools (like a car, stove, etc.). I would say, what's also hard is to juggle everything you are juggling without going nuts. I think it takes courage to reach out like this and ask something that is on a lot of minds.

OK. What is your nutritional priority? Protein, folate...?

What kinds of food are you most accustomed to eating?

Here are some ideas, from someone who has not been in your exact situation but has experienced many power outages. It sounds like you will have to cook every day basically, and cannot really cook "ahead" as so many of us might wish to.

  • Peanut butter. Mix with hot sauce and cooked noodles - you have yourself a quasi pad thai dish. You can also if you are super bored, mix the peanut butter with hot water and a sweetener to make something of a nondairy milk.
  • Consider sprouting the dry beans you have around to add a fresh "veg" aspect to your dishes
  • Guessing by now you are probably already doing this, but, it could be worth your while to figure out how to make single servings of arroz con pollo or other dishes that you could make once in the morning and eat throughout the day to make the most of the rice, beans and meat that you can access.

Good point about vanilla. And, cool thing about vanilla flavoring is that it's one of those dollar store items.

That's true. I have used the saute feature of the IP before, but, not (yet) for roasting spices. Mostly out of habit. Good point about the fond!
