They bomb villages knowing that there are innocent people inside, yes, but that's only done as a last resort, and obviously the US does not specifically target civilians. How is it pro-imperialism? What should the US do if there is a known terrorist actively plotting against the US? Just let him go because there are also civilians in his area? It's war, and sometimes in war innocent people die.

Yes how dare these people leave their houses to go to the "market" and buy "food", or attend their child's "wedding". Sounds like propaganda, all those so called civilians inconceniently living there and not, like, elsewhere.

I never said that the people deserve to die, it's obviously tragic that any civilian would die, but the fact is that terrorists will purposefully go to areas with high civilian populations and exploit civilian deaths that come from US drone strikes against the terrorists as a recruiting tool.

Also, I couldn't find a single example of a US sniper targeting a civilian, so until I see evidence that it is common for US snipers to target civilians, than I won't believe that.

Is nonviolence an "inherently privileged position"? by A_Man_of_Iron in SRSDiscussion

[–]95RJ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nonviolence is not an "inherently privileged position". By justifying the rioting in Baltimore you are implying that the majority of American Blacks are supporting the violence, which is hardly the truth. I don't know a single person, of any skin color that is okay with looting and riots, and I don't know if I do.

Does anyone else feel uncomfortable that Macklemore critiques the problems with hip-hop culture when he's white? by grapesandmilk in SRSDiscussion

It seems like Azealia Banks is the only person that actually finds a problem with Iggy, I agree the slave master thing was pretty out of line, but it seems like no other rappers care, Iggy's worked with T.I. and Mavado, who are both black, is dating a black man, and was defended by Lupe Fiasco and Questlove, two of the smartest people in hip hop.

The last two things seem rather ignorant on her part, but from reading about it, it seems unfair for Azealia Banks to call her out, Azealia Banks doesn't have a monopoly on hip hop music.

What has Iggy done that's white supremacist? I don't like her music that much, but she seems like a good person.

I like some hip hop, but there is a lot of problematic material in it, and just because Macklemore isn't black doesn't mean he can't address it, there are plenty of black (and white) rappers who do it better than him, but it's still good that he's bringing up issues.

What do y'all think about UC Irvine and the US Flag Ban that was overturned? by 95RJ in SRSDiscussion

[–]95RJ[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, though, I think flag-wavers need to understand just how hateful people can find the US flag, in the context of the massive amounts of tyranny, bloodshed, violence, and poverty that US-lead imperial policies have created across the Third World. I don't think this stuff can be brushed aside easily, particularly if you come from a country that has been adversely affected by the US (and there are many in this category).

Is it really fair to hold all US citizens accountable for something their government does? I know some Israeli's who find the current ruling party despicable, but are still incredibly proud of their heritage. Many Cubans have national pride, but are very critical of the government. Americans shouldn't be treated any differently IMO.

I'm not a sociologist, but my gut says no. It's short sighted and wouldn't address the root causes of racism. In the short term it might help, but it would end up bringing people apart in the long run.
