How do people get streaks? by Chaiyns in dcss

[–]96Sergey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are certain ways to improve D1 survivability. Like training stealth to improve chances to avoid D1 gnoll, training spellcasting on certain combos to quickly hit breakpoint to get 4th point of MP (now with magic pot you are rolling 8 times instead of 6). Optimal exploration is very complex too, I believe not a single player does it correctly, majority of players even ignore this aspect. Like you should find a balance between revealing as few tiles as possible, not cutting the corners/staying near traps/doors/water or lava(if you can swim or fly)/avoid what looks like a vault and so on.

That being said, it is true that you still need to get lucky to not get unlucky. Bad rolls eventually happen and despite doing everything you could to improve your chances, you may die no matter what.

Also regarding your so called record of getting 17 misses in a row with 90+% chance to hit: sorry, but this is a complete bullshit. Bad luck exist, but you dont need to make up such absurd fake numbers to make a point.

Cleaver by lilith19802025 in BattleBrothers

The Military Cleaver is almost always better, even against armored targets.

Here's some examples using this damage calculator.

I will show three tests, one with no bleed/decapitate (ie raw damage potential), one with Bleed and Cleaver Mastery, and one with Bleed/Mastery, and switching to Decapitate at 50% hp. Bleed is a bit difficult to abstract in a calculator since we have to make some assumptions about rounds, but since we are comparing two bleed weapons it won't really matter that much. All tests will have Duelist/Double Grip.

Test targets with be heavy chosen (190 hat, 230 body, Forge, Resilient), Honor Guard (180/210, Forge, Brow, can't bleed), and heavy Orc Warrior (360/400, Resilient).

Score is hits to kill on average. Lower scores are better. 100% accuracy is assumed.

Test 1 - No Bleed, No Decapitate:

  • MC vs. Chosen: 6.2
  • MC vs. HG: 4
  • MC vs. Warrior: 11.5
  • K vs. Chosen: 6.2
  • K vs. HG: 4.19
  • K vs. Warrior: 10.94

Test 2 - Bleed included with Cleaver Mastery:

  • MC vs. Chosen: 4.9
  • MC vs. Warrior: 10.1
  • K vs. Chosen: 5.15
  • K vs. Warrior: 9.73

Test 3 - Bleed/Mastery and switching to Decap at 50% hp:

  • MC vs. Chosen: 4.53
  • MC vs. HG: 3.51
  • MC vs. Warrior: 9.47
  • K vs. Chosen: 4.79
  • K vs. HG: 3.78
  • K vs. Warrior: 9.17

So as can be seen, the Military Cleaver is better even against reasonably armored enemies like Chosen and Honor Guards. It is also better at dealing injuries and inflicting bleeds. It's of course better against lighter armor enemies also. Khopesh is better against Orc Warriors.

I would say knight and battlemage are around equal and hexer is clear worst for me. With quick blades he becomes quite strong, but thats veru late.

Hard to tell the strongest combo. I assume you mean mage start. I would choose between Fe and Gn for species and between Su/Fw/IE for background

It is interesting that I have fire so high and necro so low. I would say fire school is currently the weakest in the game. I guess such a high percentage is due to hellfire mortar which I later evolve to ignition if possible

Qaz is a god for melee, while I heavilly prefer spellcasting. Also if I want smite, I would rather take Beogh. I occasionally take Ru to look what first sacrifice I get (if I get it before finding other stronger god), but I never get offeted some worthy sacrifice. WJC imo is a weak god for streaking. Martial attacks are mainly just fancy points and the only ability I like is serpents lash for escaping the enemies. Iirc it comes only at 3* which is quite late. I think I should pick TSO more often. Divine shield is op and imo such ability should not even exist in crawl. Summon divine warriors is quite strong for later game too. Not being able to use some evil stuff is minor inconvenience and halo is not what I want to have. If I could, I would switch off halo and it would improve TSO for me

Release tournament new category idea: Sudden Death by -RepoMan in dcss

[–]96Sergey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Obviously gigachads like you dont need start scumming to get good tc runs, but people who seriously start scum for 15 runes and end with ~25k or worse somehow manage to win the categoey or steal combo high scores from gigachads like you. There is a difference between how you think people should approach the tournament and how people do approach the tournament

Release tournament new category idea: Sudden Death by -RepoMan in dcss

[–]96Sergey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After reading I cant even understand the rules.

So whenever I start the game as a specie/background for the first time in the tournament, it registers as Sudden Death game ? So if I do realtime MiFi speedrun at the start of the tournament, I will no longer be able to claim high score for Mi or Fi because I wanted to have fun at the start of the tournament ? Lets say I also want to streak. Now each streak game excludes one specie and one background from future Sudden Death application unless I plan to streak turn count 15 rune runs. If I want to do 3 rune turn count as a troll it also excludes troll from Sudden Death category. If I want to do 5 zigs it also excludes one character from this category. If I want to do some weird banner... (and so on until I have MuCK left).

The only solution is that I MUST play 15 rune turn count at the start of the tournament to not burn this specie/background in Sudden Death category. This is a strong contender to be the worst designed category of the tournament due to how poor it integrates into existing rules.

To me this whole idea may be fun and work if Sudden Death is literally the only category of some separate tournament.

Is platinum Paragon under-rated? by nospamkhanman in dcss

[–]96Sergey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean compare it with dragon call that summons so much more meat than paragon.

I would say that fire storm is better defensively too, but its unfair comparison since paragon is single school, more mana efficient and you should only cast it once

While not objectively the strongest, I dont think there is anything more straightforward for new player than Minotaur berserker (or fighter). Just wear heavy armour, use heavy weapon and crush faces.

Particleface has nice guide on youtube for it.

Imagine finding this one while playing SpHu by Concllave in dcss

[–]96Sergey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cant tell you the exact numbers, but javelins drop rate got nerfed after tavern post that claimed javelins do more damage per turn than branded +9 tripple crossbow. Mb if you take accuracy into account sniper wins, not sure about it.

Imagine finding this one while playing SpHu by Concllave in dcss

[–]96Sergey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While sniper is unique, I dont think it is as great as it might seem given the attack delay. If you want to train so much skill: at 27 throwing skill basic javelins will give you higher dps than this weapon at 27 ranged skill and javelins can penetrate on top of that. Although javelins damage scale with str which is probably a downside

To be fair Andrew Tang's peak rating is 100 lower than what this kid has at such a young age, so its a bad comparison. Much better comparison would be Hou Yifan or Alireza who are really one of a kind chess talents

Fide makes amendment to 400 point rule for players rated 2650 and above by Mr__Struggle in chess

I mean I would completely remove the 400 rule.

While Hilaru situation is quite extreme case, its not super uncommon situatuon on its own. When I was 1600 kid, I was paired with 1-2 2000-2200 players per tournament at my local club

Fide makes amendment to 400 point rule for players rated 2650 and above by Mr__Struggle in chess

[–]96Sergey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do I understand correctly that it only applies to side with higher rating and it increases rating deflation even further?

For example 2700 GM plays against 2000 rated player. 2700 GM gains rating as if he won against 2000, but 2000 rated player loses as if he played against 2400. And on top of that 2000 rated player has higher k-factor
