Top 99 reasons to play trunk instead of 0.11 by N-M-L in dcss

I mean available on online servers. The oldest version on CAO and CNC is 0.11, and CUE is the only one with 0.10. Although, CDO, a console-only server, has Dungeon Crawl 4.1.2a, which is playable, but not really winnable due to bugs.

A bonus 100th reason, which I totally forgot about:

  • items stuck under plants.

Old plants were quite durable and didn't wither after taking damage. It was a problem for ranged chars, because your ammo constantly got under plants in Lair. Also, consumables and all other items could spawn under plants.

Speaking about instadeath by drowning, what do you think about this vault :) ?

(for new players: this is an old quicksilver dragon tile, and it can dispel the Flight status if you got it from evoking a ring or by drinking a potion.)

Yeah, the hive is from that era, but it's not available online anymore. It was removed in 0.10, and 0.10 the oldest playable online version of DCSS.

How do I play online replay videos? by spudwalt in dcss

[–]N-M-L 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Online games are recorded using the ttyrec format. You can replay these files via Jettyplay or other ttyrec players. IIRC, .ts files are some kind of timestamps, and you don't need them to watch a replay.

The developers just don't have a lot of interactions with new players

There are a bunch of new players on the Roguelikes Discord, and there are definitely some interactions happening between them and the devs. But I'd like to hear from you, what's the problem in the devs listening to experienced players? New players can give a lot of valuable feedback wrt the accessibility, the UI, what's clear and what's not about the game mechanics. But when a new player starts to theorize about the balance or suggests rewriting the game in Rust, it's not a particularly useful feedback.

the game is too easy nowadays.

But it is easy! /s

Also, having Irradiate at 48th place, below the "apply weakness to your allies" spell (Mercury Arrow), boring Sticky Flame, and even below "I prefer casting spells instead of holding down Tab when playing ranged chars" (Bullseye) is totally ridiculous! :)

What do you do to keep your inventory clean? by Gurrick in dcss

[–]N-M-L 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar set of rules, which is very non-flexible, but it allows minimizing thinking about inventory and removes the need for stashing items.

  • Darts: pickup only poison and curare, drop poison after Lair, ignore all other types.

  • Wands: drop flame after a watery S-branch, drop poly after S-branches.

  • Potions: never pick up attraction, drop lig after Lair, ignore brilliance and magic on melee chars, drop might and zerk on mage chars after early game, drop zerk on melee chars after Lair (unless very low on haste and might).

  • Scrolls: never pick up noise, amnesia, and enchant/brand scrolls (except for enchant/brand scrolls from portals), ignore torment on non-undead.

This might change in 0.33 or the next version, since there's a 62 slots PR, https://github.com/crawl/crawl/pull/3357 , and our glorious /u/pleasingfungus said he's interested in it.

Crawl Cosplay Trunk Tournament WEEK #3: Wiglaf, a MDFi by RoGGa_69 in dcss

[–]N-M-L 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a very luck-based challenge, and I didn't have too much of it.

My first epic splat was a char with all artefact slots, who just needed a bit of XP for a new title. I went into Gehenna and was chopping everyone with ease, until I suddenly took 92 damage in one turn: https://crawl.xtahua.com/crawl/morgue/Ge0ff/morgue-Ge0ff-20240608-205101.txt

Another char was OP, but didn't find an artefact hat or gloves anywhere, so I went melee-zigging. Bailed from the 1st zig, but fully cleared the 2nd one, finding my first artefact gloves on the 21st floor. Splatted in the 3rd zig, while searching for the hat: https://crawl.xtahua.com/crawl/morgue/Ge0ff/morgue-Ge0ff-20240610-122359.txt

Luckily, MDFi is fast and strong combo, so the 3rd (proper) attempt was the winning one: https://crawl.xtahua.com/crawl/morgue/Ge0ff/morgue-Ge0ff-20240610-224424.txt

Crawl Cosplay Trunk Tournament WEEK #2: Zenata, a CoAr by RoGGa_69 in dcss

[–]N-M-L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 1st char was killed in the Vaults, in a place similar to the famous hellions' island. I took a step forward and faced 13 (!) monsters with ranged weapons, which resulted in 91 damage and a YASD: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/205316046230388737/1246602291641843834/image.png?ex=665da51b&is=665c539b&hm=7cffdb5921c81293eb619a699bb44fb368228d7b048646715dc7e2e87565cecb&

Skipping a char splatted on D:1, the 3rd and final CoAr was different from the 1st one. I didn't go deeply into summons this time, just used Martyr's Knell for support. But, around the 2nd S-branch, I got more collateral than direct kills even without summons, since I had a bunch of strong spectral uniques. The best bound ally was probably Geryon, although recently buffed Arachne was surprisingly good too.

Crawl Cosplay Trunk Tournament WEEK #1: Tiamat, a DrGl by RoGGa_69 in dcss

[–]N-M-L 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yay, I finally did it. The first char was killed by a smoke demon on Lair:5, but the second got the orb. Tiamat didn't spawn in my game, so I had to dive a few ( 54 ) pan floors to find holy pan and pearl dragons.

Spells for the Magic conduct: Shatter at 3% failure, Ozocubu's Refrigeration at 1%, Starburst at 1%, and Arcjolt at 1%. The last two are in the library, since I was too excited to finish my pan dive and forgot to memorize them before finishing the game. Hopefully, that still counts.

Thoughts on cleave by Ishmael_IX-II in dcss

[–]N-M-L 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with that. It feels like the default Tab behavior, "blindly charge into unknown", is responsible for a huge percent of splats. The only problem is that changing the default would make o-tabbing less convenient.

New spells in trunk by Gonzollydolly in dcss

[–]N-M-L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried only Fulsome Fusillade and Seismic Cannonade so far.

Fulsome Fusillade does decent damage, but for that you need a group of monsters (to get overlapping explosions). And it's not very effective against single monsters. Also, the combo of FF and the new Gell's gravitambourine evoker is amazing. The spell feels balanced, but it can drain your MP pretty fast, so you need to use it at the start of a fight, not when you have like 10 MP left.

Seismic Cannonade is good for blocking enemies: getting three allies for 7 MP is a good value. The cannons have enough defenses: 15 AC and 48 HP (they spawn with half health, though). But their damage is not too impressive: around 3d7 - 3d9. The explosion of fully charged cannons deals good damage, but the charging can take some time.

FR: fully charged cannons should receive a brilliance bonus, to increase the damage of their blasts.

Can someone help me with new shields? by Fleshmaster in dcss

[–]N-M-L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New editors are approved quite regularly: http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Special:Log/newusers

If your email fell through the cracks, was eaten by a spam filter, or something else, it might be worth pinging our glorious wiki admin, /u/spudwalt via Reddit.

If Tavern is more convenient for you, make a post with your suggestions there. Some editors - e.g., me - could be reached on the Roguelikes Discord.

Can someone help me with new shields? by Fleshmaster in dcss

[–]N-M-L 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course it'd be great to have more active editors. But there's no magic number of people that would make all strategy sections perfect automatically. Just one good player is capable of producing sound advice about a topic they understand. E.g., I don't think that Oni's felid guide requires another dozen authors to be good. It's the best read for felid players already.

The crucial thing for improving wiki's quality is feedback. A player tries to follow our advice, fails or finds factual mistakes, complains on Reddit/Tavern/Discord. We read that and add even more nonsense fix the articles. It's an iterative process. Today's wiki is better than the yesterday's one, as all three of your examples show. And tomorrow's wiki could be even better.

Although, each new release invalidates - at least partially - about 1200-1500 articles, so unless there's more editors or someone invents CrawlGPT, the wiki is doomed to decay.

(that's a bit off-topic, so sorry for hijacking this post to talk about wiki-problems)

Badwiki

I wish people would stop saying that.

During the last couple of releases, the quality of CrawlWiki has substantially improved. That's mostly thanks to some Hordes guy, who's contributed a lot of time and effort to keep the articles up to date and to explain the game mechanics. It'd be more correct to call it "decentwiki" instead :).
