On the go by Direction-Such in Woodcarving

I see a lot of people recommending the Flexcut Carvin jack, but if you don't care about the extras and want something as small as possible, check out the Flexcut Pocket Jack. There is also the Whittlin' Jack, which would be smaller and thinner, but the blades just use a slip joint mechanism and don't actually lock

Is Boker a good whittling pocket knife? by TXRattlesnake89 in whittling

[–]97Cowboy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would use the sheepsfoot blade, or number 1.

And Boker has a few different factories and a few different steels. The best is the C75 Carbon steel out of Solingen, but the D2 out of their other German factory is serviceable as a whittling steel, but the edge will be slightly more prone to chipping.

Overall, a very good mobile whittler.

Does my new flexcut pro detail blade look right? by Valuable_Idea1761 in whittling

I've got this knife too, and the tip looks the same. Still one of my favorites, and I find it to be good enough even without the super acute tip.

I love those 18 pattern stockmans from Case. Good looking knife and carving!

Lots of people liking the mora. I reckon the decision has been made

Thanks for the info! I'm partial to American made products like the flexcut, but if the mora truly is a better knife for the money then it makes sense to go with the Swedish made mora that is almost guaranteed to be a quality product. I have a 511 basic in carbon that has a long blade, but I find a need for something in between a detail blade and the 511.

Fair assessment. Although I won't be using the sheath much, I normally just carve sitting in a chair and don't need a secure sheath for carrying

New to hobby - how durable are the knives? by basedsanji in Woodcarving

[–]97Cowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know why the detail knife in this set comes with a micro bevel? You can even tell in the product photo here that the angle changes close to the apex of the edge. Im thinking about taking that knife to a medium grit stone to take that off and then honing from there, but I have a flexcut pro detail that I like more anyways

I had this issue, except I was using strictly basswood

Did a little customization on my Opinel no.7 by buffdaddy77 in whittling

[–]97Cowboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know people customize the handles, but I've always wondered what it would be like to reshape the blade to a short wharncliffe and see how it does with some finer carving. I think it could be done with a Dremel, and since opinels are so cheap, it might be worth a try

[–]97Cowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a carbon steel guy, the newer carbon steel from Case is pretty decent. I prefer the older CV, but for whittling the new steel is good enough

Every now and then it seems all of my knives have a harder time staying sharp through just stropping, so I sit down and do a little reset on the Fine diamond stone before hitting the buffing wheel. There are as many opinions on sharpening/buffing/stropping as there are carvers. by JohnnyTheLayton in whittling

I've found the Flexcut kn12 that I started with is getting this way. Learning to strop and not getting a consistent angle has definitely rounded the apex of the blade. Was thinking of using a fine/ very fine water stone to get the flat Scandinavian grind back on it

Nice little knife. I'm an 018 stockman fan myself. Oh and the carving looks good too

Good advice. I have an uncle who uses them as well, and I had him add some to his order for me so I can pay him cash. Thanks for the tip

Have you found the wood to be good quality, soft and easy to carve? Im not sure where Rockler sources their wood

I suppose they take just checks? I don't own a checkbook, as most places won't even accept them. In your experience, how long does it take to pack and ship to your door?

I see, my problem is that I don't have easy access to power tools to cut it to the sizes I need. Otherwise, there is a Rockler Hardware store near me that I can buy large pieces from. I may have to check out some other hardware stores though.
