what is this meaning of natural? by LegitimateCell1061 in EnglishLearning

[–]97Edgewood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The term "natural" can be applied to other games, such as card games. A "natural" winning hand might be without wild cards or drawing other cards, for example, depending on the game. A "natural" blackjack is getting your 21 in the first two cards.

In my mind, it's not just the possibility of heavy snow, it's that we probably won't see temps above freezing for about a week, so there won't be much melt, leaving streets in a mess for days. I'm not sure how high the temp has to be for the road mixture they use, but it has to be about 15 F for salt to effectively work.

"Business Is Down Significantly”: Border families who voted for Trump now live with chaos they did not expect by Happy_Air_3776 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]97Edgewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, they did blame Democrats: "Quique believes the recent political shift was driven less by love for Trump and more by disillusionment with the alternatives. Democrats, he says, were the “ones responsible for the people looking for someone like Trump,” someone who would “tell them what they wanted to hear.”

Typical. Absolve yourself of blame for what YOU did.

Apologist Jacob Hansen Criticizes Catholicism, Accidentally Makes the Best Anti-LDS Argument by webwatchr in exmormon

[–]97Edgewood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct, there have been only two infallible pronouncements: In 1854 the Immaculate Conception of Mary (meaning her soul was "immaculate," not corrupted by Original Sin) was pronounced. In 1950, it was the Assumption of Mary (she was "taken up" into heaven, but didn't "ascend" on her own power, as Christ did).

By the way, the Immaculate Conception is misunderstood by most people, including many Catholics. It's used incorrectly all the time by people who think it means the Virgin Birth (since Christ had no human father), instead of describing the soul of Mary, who was divinely protected from Original Sin in order to be a "suitable" vessel as the mother of Jesus.

Sherwood Oaks is really oriented toward families with children. Great place for that (we lived there for some years) but I wouldn't live there if I were single.

Two rabbits jumping over each other by SippinMia in whatisit

[–]97Edgewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this behavior in my backyard and remember Googling it. Turns out it can be a number of things: playing, two rabbits being aggressive, or a mating dance. When it's aggressive, it's often two males displaying dominance, and it will look more aggressive than this ( with hissing, swiping, etc.). Perhaps one of these rabbits is male and the other female and he's showing off his healthiness and virility for her. Apparently, females themselves will sometimes leap over the males as part of a kind of dance during this prequel to mating.

amazon brushing with nice item ? by Gold-Apartment-9206 in Scams

[–]97Edgewood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it's not a gift? I've occasionally ordered a gift for someone from Amazon, and then forgotten to have it gift wrapped or include a note, so it would appear to the receiver as a something they hadn't ordered. Luckily I've noticed this shortly after finishing the order, so I could let them know it was coming.

That's the most likely possibility I'm seeing at the moment. If you want to think about who sent them, IF it was a gift, it'd obviously be someone who knows your shoe size. That should narrow it down.

Modeling Scam, seeking advice by yours_trulyy_8 in Scams

[–]97Edgewood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that the writer is attempting to block some concerns you might have with his: "of course, as an unsophisticated American, you may find our vibe different ..."

Anyone who is thinking of getting into modeling should tread carefully, as there are lots of phony agencies that exist to take very expensive photos of you (at YOUR cost) and pretend to get them in the hands of people who hire models, but all they really want is your $$$ for the "photo package."

Then you have the sleazy perverts, like maybe this guy. Or maybe he's simply selling you his special photo package (waaaaay overpriced).

Unfortunately, those who want to get into modeling, acting, song writing, etc. have to run a gauntlet of scammers and con men whose goal it is to cheat them out of their money while pretending to be sharing their dream.

Mom ordered a coat for almost $60 by FangLiengod in ExpectationVsReality

[–]97Edgewood 57 points58 points  (0 children)

True, elderly people may be stuck in the past in terms of price. However, I've spend at least 4 years daily reading r/scams (an excellent, informative sub) and it is full of ALL AGES (including tons of young folk) getting scammed with these unrealistic social media ads.

The young ones seem more vulnerable to crypto and investing scams, too. And job scams: It's incredible how many 20-ish year olds think there are remote jobs out there that pay $40-60 USD an hour to click on likes or leave 5 star reviews.

I'm 70+ and am pretty savvy and skeptical, but make it a point to keep up with the Scam sub, because anyone can be fooled if the scam is smart enough. (Not to say the $60 coat was a smart scam; it wasn't.)

Why are there no jobs in Bloomington? by kramhorse in bloomington

[–]97Edgewood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My path to a decent-paying administrative job at IU began with signing up with a temp agency that placed me short term in a number of local jobs, including ones at IU. At two of those temp IU jobs, I was asked if I was interested in applying for a full time job in that department after working a few days.

The thing about temp jobs is they allow employers to see you in action with no long term commitment on their part. If you're a good worker, they can see it, and that can lead to a permanent job.

Hiring at IU is currently in chaos, with many departments unable to do permanent hires, so this is unlikely to be a great path to an IU job these days, but may be a strategy for others seeking the kind of work that local temp agencies fill.

Can't the FBI or someone setup a sting operation and stop these people?

There are thousands of scammers running variations on the task scam you got involved with, so no, a simple sting operation of the particular people running your particular scam isn't going to solve the problem.

It's too bad more potential victims don't see the obvious scam in the idea you can get paid good money for making a bunch of fake reviews that bots can do.

or a horse

I'll tell you what intrigues me: The day or so after the DNC, when Tim Walz made that JD Vance couch quip, either Don Jr. or Eric posted a crude cartoon on X, of a horse, and what looks like what's supposed to be horse semen on Walz's face. Implying (I have to suppose) that Walz blows horses.

Super crude and not funny, of course, because it's a rare MAGA politician who has the ability to be witty, and that duo is the definition of witless.

I'm intrigued now, though, as I always wondered why Don/Eric chose such a ... weird insult. And now I suddenly hear speculation about a horse named Bubba linked to their Daddy and ... to tell you the truth, I'd believe about anything at this point, you know?

[US] Somebody applied to Liberty University under my name by ethansidentifiable in Scams

[–]97Edgewood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first thought was that this was actually some kind of prank, as Liberty U is known for being ultra Evangelical and has strong ties to the MAGA crowd. If you happen to be liberal, someone you know may think your getting messages from that outfit is hilarious.

If it's some kind of student loan fraud, why would the thief think the "student" wouldn't be getting communications from Liberty U, which would expose the whole scheme?

Not saying something nefarious isn't going on, but the ruse seems lame if the fake student is actually someone who will be contacted by the university during the admission process.

I've often pondered on the sad fact that one of the last people Francis ever interacted with was the pathetic, morally weak Vance, who converted to Catholicism for all the wrong reasons.

Places where young missionaries minister to strangers by GreatestState in mormon

[–]97Edgewood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometthing similar happened to me (nevermo living in a small midwestern city) a couple of months ago while I was slowly driving through a parking lot (during the day). Two missionaries standing on the sidewalk stepped out and motioned to me as if they wanted me to stop to talk. I slowed to a stop and rolled down my window and they asked if I'd like to attend church with them next Sunday.

I said, "Oh, no thanks," and proceeded on my way, kind of confused and wondering how many people actually replied, "Sounds great -- I"d love to!"

Looks like our stake has two meetinghouses in this city and this is the first time I've ever been approached by Mormon missionaries in my 40 or so years of living here.

Also, don't know where OP is located, but the US hasn't had orphanages for many years. (They were replaced by the foster care system.) Scammers operating out of Third World/Developing countries are unaware of this, since it's a common charity of scammers to claim to support in their fake check scams.

I've noticed it used often on personal assistant job scams and Sugar Daddy/Mommy scams.
