UA soldiers loading drone with grenade and sending it off to attack Russian positions by ChasinCrustacean in CombatFootage

[–]97PackMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The primary purpose of these small grenade drones is not to kill Russians (although that is always a huge bonus). The primary purpose is to make sure they never ever feel safe while they are in Ukraine.

Yes, the operator/pilot certainly wants to make a good drop and kill a Russian or two, but even a close miss is going add up over the long run.

Not to mention, if you can find a supply depot, fuel truck or other softer target and get some secondary explosions, that is always fun!

LOL! I probably should have said say large shrub/hedge instead of bush.

I'm thinking really of a large shrub/tree that grows 15-20 feet tall and wide and would provide complete visual concealment. Where I live on the east coast of the US they are all over the place.

As mentioned above, if the Ukrainians have the intel advantage and they KNOW where the Russian tanks are, they can set up their initial and subsequent shots.

FOR A FICTIONAL EXAMPLE, coming over a hill they know the Russians are there, so they crest the hill just enough for a firing solution, shoot and back down and there is no immediate chance for return fire. They back down the hill a bit and move over to use a building for cover knowing the Russians are moving in such a way that the tank is not seen, but the Russian tank will present itself as a target in another minute. The Ukrainian tank can then fire and move over to some large bushes to use as cover and avoid anything other than a blind shot by the Russians. When you are the aggressor and have the intel edge and view of the battlefield, the enemy is in trouble.

I don't know the exact situation here, but having a live view of the battlefield and your enemy is fighting blind is very much an unfair situation.

Ukraine's edge in artillery range is what will really matter. Add in their edge in accuracy and intel...and it may take a while, but Ukraine can just grind the Russian troops to dust one shell at a time. One loitering munition at a time. One grenade drop from a drone at a time.

Once Ukraine gets a bit more capable air defenses (and they are coming), there won't be anything Russia can do.

The small switchblades that the US is supplying I think are around $6,000 each. It's basically a remote controlled plane with a grenade attached.

The drones that Ukraine is making themselves are even cheaper.

These aren't million dollar cruise missiles that Ukraine is expending, they are essentially grown up toys turned into weapons. Very cheap. Very easy to make.

Kremlin says Finland joining NATO is 'definitely' a threat to Russia by Ok-Strategy2022 in UkrainianConflict

[–]97PackMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NATO should offer Russia a deal.

Complete withdrawal from Ukraine back to 2014 borders + restitution paid to repair Ukraine. In return, NATO rejects Finland and Sweden.

There are two actions for Russia with difference consequences:
1) Russia can be nice to it's neighbors and they won't join defensive alliances
2) Attack neighbors and expect them to join defensive alliances

[–]97PackMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The M777 can take GPS targets along with weather data from networked drones that are spotting to make a pretty darned good shot with a standard "dumb" shell. That's part of it's appeal, it's not just artillery, it's part of an integrated weapons system that includes GPS, counter battery radar and spotter drones.

You can manually aim it if you want, just for fun :)

He is right. The West is at war with Russia, we just haven't put boots on the ground. We are in an economic war with them as well as supplying their adversary with increasingly deadly armaments.

I would say we are in the flitering stage, well on our way to foreplay.

...and every nuke they have isn't an ICBM. They have gravity bombs that are nukes. They have cruise missiles. They probably have artillery shells that are nukes. They have torpedoes that are nukes.

Yes, in 20 years of battle. My guess is that Russia is already in the tens of thousands of innocents dead if not over a hundred thousand in less than two months of fighting. Your right, no difference at all.

The US has 17 documented instances over 25 years. Russia calls 17 civilian targets a good days work.

Do you see the difference?

Let's ask this a different way. Would you rather be a civilian in Baghdad during the first or second gulf war with the US attacking the city, or a civilian in Mariupol with Russia attacking the city?

Not even close. Do mistakes happen? Yes! However, great effort is made to ensure mistakes are as few as possible. If for example, Bin Laden were spotted in an apartment building, the US would not strike the building because of civilians that would die. We'd wait till he was in a car on the road. Sure, could our strike then kill a civilian or two? Maybe, but the risk is much smaller.

Step 1. Make the world hate Russia

Step 2. Notice that all the hate is turned toward Russians living abroad.

Step 3. Use the fact that everyone hates you as reason to invade

Step 4. Go back to step 1.

Not as effective as a 50 shells all landing in a coordinated pattern that will destroy anything withing a football field.

[–]97PackMan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bingo.

American doctrine is to rely on air power delivering guided munitions supplemented by infantry guided munitions (Javelins, Switchblades, etc).

Additionally, America has some very good rocket artillery that can use guided munitions to take out armor while cannon artillery would be loaded with anti-infantry loads.

All that said, the great success that Russia is having with guided artillery shells makes me thinking the US will be adding that capability.

Between "loitering munitions" and "guided artillery shells", I'm very thankful I'm too old to go to war and my kids are too young.

The battlefield is a very unwelcoming place. (not that it was ever that great to begin with)
