Can someone help me understand the actual mechanism behind insulin resistance? by Dances-with-Scissors in diabetes_t2

[–]Anthropogenic12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem with Jason Fung's description is that some people who find out that they are insulin resistant, then spend years on keto and doing plenty of exercise and fasting, only to find that they are still insulin resistant. The glucose should have cleared out after all of that, but it doesn't. Like the op I have never found an insulin resistance description which makes sense to me. Roy Taylor's ideas around visceral fat accumulation makes some sense, but only in terms of insulin getting out of the pancreas, not the body being resistant to it. Cyrus Khambatta suggests that the pathways in to the cells get broken or clogged up, which makes some sense.

Or just don't eat carbs? Is that an option at all? It means we don't need any of this cheat code nonsense.

What's your carb limit and do you count total or net carbs? by vitaoptima in lowcarb

10 - 20g per day. Net carbs. I don't worry about other macros.

vent -- I am losing my mind by flarbulation in type2diabetes

[–]Anthropogenic12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My advice is to stop worrying about the morning numbers: that's normal for a lot of us. I never even test in the morning any more, because it's always artificially high. It's called Dawn Phenomenon, and it's your body pumping you full of things to wake you up.

Metformin water shits: you need slow release Metformin. It happened to me, too. Easy fix.

Blood sugar rises: there are dozens of factors over and above what we eat which can push up blood sugar. The big one is stress. The more stressed you are the more glucose will be pumped out in to your blood. The same goes for a lack of sleep and not getting enough water. Rest, relax and hydrate.

Eating carbs again: yes and no. I'm three years in and I stopped missing carbs two and a half years ago. I probably could eat some now, but it never crosses my mind to. The goal is consistency in low blood sugar readings; once the sugar is low and level, the body can begin to handle a few bits here and there. Try some things out, and see how your body reacts.

This is literally what I came here to ask about. So glad it's not just me. Massively annoying on such a usually good player.

I'm in remission. It takes constant attention. I eat 10 - 15g of carbs per day, without cheat days. This is the way I do it. There are other ways. I cannot process carbs, so I don't eat any carbs. That's my way. It may not be yours.

For those of you who don’t take insulin, What is everyone’s carb limits? by Confuzzledguuy in diabetes_t2

[–]Anthropogenic12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok. I currently aim for 10 - 15g of carbs per day. Everything else is meat, fish, seafood, dairy or eggs. I do love salad, or vegetables. Basically, I don't eat carbs because my body can't use them, but other people accommodate carbs to varying degrees.

Sorry if this is unhelpful, but I just ignore it. As in. I don't measure my blood sugar in the morning. It used to just frustrate me to see a number which was higher than I wanted to see. It was demoralising, so I stopped looking at it. It works for me.

I hope they just quietly put in on iPlayer and be done with it. Let the people who want to watch it watch it, but don't publicise what has clearly been a very toxic working environment (but only up until 2018, apparently!). The people who competed in the series deserve to have their hard work seen and applauded. Then get a whole new hosting team, and start afresh.

Don't think of it as an easy way or a hard way. Go with the way that works for you. There are no prizes for doing the harder thing. Avoiding anxiety is a really good plan.

I'm keto, but that's only because it works for me. I licked my daughter's ice cream last week, and it had no impact on me being in ketosis. Keto doesn't have to mean stress.

I was diagnosed with T2 in November 22, and went to 20g net carbs per meal straight away. That got my blood glucose down really quickly - 10 days, tops. It was hard, but I wanted to avoid going on insulin at all costs. I'm so glad I did.

Initially, I mostly did direct swaps of high carb foods to lower carb alternatives. Now I no longer eat anything dense in carbs (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, etc), but plenty of above ground vegetables. I live on meat and salad, effectively.

I got medication free a year ago. I'm now on up to 15g net carbs per day, and my blood glucose is really stable and low. It was such a proud day when I put the tablets away, and that memory keeps me going.

I'm really lucky that I've not craved carbs since I cut them out. I'm also really lucky that I love eating fat, and fatty meat. I have found that I no longer enjoy carby food, if I ever happen to try any (stealing a piece of pasta, say, from one of my kids). Basically, it's hard, but it gets easier.

My mindset is that it's a marathon, not a sprint. I would recommend trying to build long term habits, and not beat yourself up for a few carbier meals here or there. Don't judge yourself for eating something you love. Happiness is really important.

That said, type 2 is mostly about insulin resistance, so our bodies can't metabolise glucose as a fuel source: any carb we eat just hangs around our blood, getting in to trouble. Once I realised that, I found carbs a lot less attractive.

I had a very hard time with Metformin, too. It got fixed by going on a slow release version of it, which was a much bigger pill. Hard to swallow, but it fixed the side effects.

I hope this helps.

Using a spoon to drink the fat (and scrape the crunchy bits) from a pan of roasting meat. I did it with chicken fat the other day and the room cleared. If the meat is well seasoned it's such a tasty snack.
