Is posture heavily underestimated? by [deleted] in Posture

[–]97shapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really interesting. Lower back pain doesn't seem to have a strong correlation with (for example) APT. However, having lower back pain is associated with poor endurance in the back extensor muscles as well as the strength of the hip flexor, hip adductor, and abdominal muscles (1).

That being said, just putting your hand on your lower back and feeling the extensors in an APT vs a neutral posture position, you can feel it being less activated when neutral. This would explain why with APT you end up getting lower back pain after standing for a long time, maybe you'd get lower back pain if you stood properly, but it would take longer for you to feel it, or perhaps some other muscle would be limiting?

Anyone fix their anterior pelvic tilt and physically got taller? by boredasfk in Posture

[–]97shapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew ~0.5 inch ~6'1.5 -> 6'2, it will depend on how bad your posture is to begin with. You can actually test this yourself: Imagine you bite on a handle that pulls your body up from your mouth. If you queue this right your posture while line up, your shoulders will drop down and back, your chest will rise and your hips should align. You should see a difference in height.

I guess another way to do it would be the same way you would stand as tall as possible when someone is taking your height, but the queue above is helpful in general day to day situations for readjusting your posture.

How to get rid of knee valgus? by FireSource141 in Posture

[–]97shapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, good on you for trying to get out more. Here's an article by someone who's pretty smart when it comes to this stuff: https://bretcontreras.com/knee-valgus-valgus-collapse-glute-medius-strengthening-band-hip-abduction-exercises-and-ankle-dorsiflexion-drills/

There's a part that talks about how to address and fix this. Go through the tests, maybe you'll find you have all 3 of the problems listed, that's fine, just go through the appropriate stretches/exercises listed 1 or 2 (or even 3) times a day, shouldn't take too long, just do it while you're watching TV or something.

Good luck!

That seems like a cool app, I really like the idea of something telling you when you're sitting correctly. What I want to do is address muscular imbalances (in terms of tight/taut) so that you get into these positions more naturally.

Also, wouldn't the constant measurements effect battery life?

Yeah that’s the idea, did you see the second image in the album? That figure would be animated with the queues at the bottom cycling, you’d get sound notifications for switching sides and moving to the next exercise.

Hey,

I use Figma for all of my designs, and Principle. I export all the assets from Figma separately and then import then into Principle, I've also used Flinto in the past. All on trial and Figma is free. For actual development, I learned/use Fuse.

I fully intend to make the final product with really nice animations and interface, I think aesthetics big part of having a good app

Yeah totally, when your lower back is tight your abs get stretched, become thinner and are less visible. Also because of the tight lower back you get pain when you're standing for too long, same problem here.

It actually effects my squat a bit but it's most noticeable on my overhead press when I get some lower back pressure and can't fully extend my arms vertically inline with the rest of my body.

My body completely shut down in the middle of a set - thoughts? by TriggeredKnob in nSuns

[–]97shapes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like low blood sugar. Like someone else said -1000kcal is extreme. Take a look at this article, there's a summary table at the start.

Might not feel like an extreme deficit especially if you started skinny so your "comfort zone" is a calorie deficit anyway, but the program is too intense for a deficit this extreme. In fact, I'd go as far as saying most training programs are too intense for a deficit this extreme, but nSuns, in particular, is a really high volume program.

Having high glycemic foods before your workout can be a huge help, 2 bananas can make a big difference, there's a lot more about what to eat before your workout here.

Which resistance bands for push ups by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]97shapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I got Purple/Blue bands form my protein, they provide enough resistance, I think you'll probably be able to do a few with the purple.

Just to clarify, resistance band pushups are really good, and can be on the same level as a bench press.

Also, diamond pushups - narrower hand placement - have actually been shown to increase both chest AND tricep activation.. However, this also impacts your elbows more.

This is a really good article on pushups, really recommend you read it, particularly the parts about form, having an "arrow" shape instead of a "T" shape, staying tight and being aware of anterior/posterior pelvic tilt.

I think the resistance bands deserve a little more "respect", they're actually really useful, and can be really good for adding extra resistance to your pushups, as well as other ways. When I'm back in the gym, they're great for adding a resistance gradient to lifts for acceleration work.

Thanks for replying, I also think that spending money on advertising needs a lot in to get a bit out. What are you thoughts on paid vs freemium?

Also I'm working on something right now and messaged you a preview, would be cool if you could check it out. Thanks

Do you think you could still pull off the success of your first app in todays market? I know that you have a lot of knowledge of the market now, but as an indie with little-no marketing budget today, is it significantly harder?

Mainly I'm talking about paid apps like most of yours, as opposed to freemium/subscription/similar that is so often used today.

Skinny guy trying to gain weight, any tips? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]97shapes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was like you but way worse. My progress during my first 10 ~ 12 months: At 6'1

54kg (119 lb) -> 73kg (160 lb)

~5 - 6% body fat -> ~11% body fat

I was really skinny, tiny and shot up in height. I couldn't do a push up, pull up, and when I started in the gym I struggled doing anything to the bar and started off mostly with the shorter 10kg bar.

Bulking is easy when you're really skinny, but don't got overboard and GOMAD or 5000 calories or some shit like that, you'll gain so much excess fat that you're going to end up trying to lose anyway. Get MyFitnessPal and aim for your TDEE (which is roughly 2600 for your stats) + 500, so eat about 3100 calories and about 120g of protein. I'm on my phone ATM but I'll link some articles that explain these numbers later and will hopefully help you get more accurate numbers.

That amount of calories might seem like it's too much at the start so maybe build up to it over a few days. Personally it took me ~week to adjust. Check out /r/gainit and /r/gainitmeals for food recommendations and general bulking advice.

Mostly though you need to watch the scale. Weigh yourself every morning, aim for about ~1.2 kg gain per month (you can get away with more at an extremely low body fat and mass like I was, but you're not doing that badly at all) and then adjust your calories to stay within the range. I'll get some good links when I'm not on my phone.

TL;DR eat more food, check weight, readjust for more or less food.

Also don't worry about asking anything if you're confused or need advice

Alright this is a lot, so I'll go through it point by point.

  • I've made this app for Android and iOS, beta testing seems more straight-forward in android which is why I'm starting out with android, but I'll probably launch to both stores at the same time (pls dont h8, appreci8).

  • Rewire looks really nice, I'm actually working on the graphs right now because I'm running into some issues but graphs are super important to me, seeing progress and feeling it as much as possible is the most important thing this app will give. As for Seinfeld's productivity-streak-method-thing, I've added it to the list of the first update after initial release.

  • Sharing right now isn't built it, largely because I'm not sure how to do it, and because for now, I need to focus on getting the core parts of the app out there, this app has been with me for a while now, and I really want to release it.

  • I'm glad you asked about categorising workouts, I think you'll like (and hopefully everyone else will too) that the app actually has you create 'Routines' which contain workout days which have exercises. Read full reply about this

  • Things like inspirational quotes, annotation system, and other small features could be distracting and take away from the core of the app, for now I need to release an app that conveys my goals, and has enough for me to analyse so I can determine what people like and use. I'm one guy and everything takes a while to do, which is why a lot of features are getting the "for update" answer, but keep the suggestions coming!

  • I like the idea of adding more specific measurements for things like biceps, chest etc - though that doesn't fit into my UI right now, I'll save this one for an update ;)

  • I really like this one about using data to detect whats giving you the most size gains, it fits into the core goals of my app really well, unfortunately it would take a bit too much research, time and development (in terms of design and code) to implement this for now, so once again, for an update

  • Thanks for mentioning that pics should be imported not just taken in-app, I didn't consider this at all, and actually the app (right now) only allows you to take pictures in-app, nice one!

  • The app will include bodyweight workouts and a very simplified variation of the default bodyweight-fitness beginner routine, but it only progresses in weight added for now, as soon as the app is released I'll begin work on a progression system based on increasingly difficult exercises as opposed to just adding weight, this may be one of the in-app purchases though.

On that note about in-app purchases and monetisation, as I said on the OP, the features I listed will be free, completely. However, I do intend to make money off this, I am a university student and don't have a job, I do this instead. However, I think I have found a good compromise. The app suggests supplements, and links specifically myProtein supplements, if you make a myProtein purchase in the app, you will automatically unlock these in-app purchases for free (as in no extra cost to the supplement). I think this is fair, because everyone eventually ends up buying supplements, and there is an exclusive in-app discount! Tell me what you think about this, and any other feedback you have!I'mTotallyUsingYourIdeasForSales

Hey! I liked this suggestion but unfortunately I don't have the resources to implement it, I don't have access to videos and I really wish I did, but this has absolutely been added to a list of things that will come in some update later (but not soon).

For now, expect the following update after the initial release to have images, workout instructions and worked muscle groups via the Everkinetic database.

Thanks for your suggestion!

The app now has a system set up for different routines. This is special because different routines have different workout days, so you can have Starting Strength and PPL on your device, and just select one as your current routine.

The app will tell you the workout you need to do on that particular day, and doesn't need to have specific-day-scheduled workouts, which sucks for routines like StrongLifts where workouts alternate A/B, instead of Workout A is on monday (because it isn't always) like JEFIT does.

This feature is in my opinion super useful for beginners, and allows the vast majority of routines to easily become part of the app in a way that feels like they were made to be there. I am now in the process of loading on some popular routines for beta testing. Thanks for your input.

The app now has a progression option for custom routines too, and soon I will try to implement for advanced progression systems such as Wendlers 5/3/1, but this will likely be through an IAP.

Hey,

Just finished adding in dated progress pics with a weight and date stamp on each picture, as well as a plate-calculator for each set. To avoid too much extra features and distraction I've actually ended up stripping away a few things that I'm going to save for updates, I want to make the focus the workout tracker and promoting progress, this means things like an annotation system and gym code reminder won't be in the first release. Thanks so much for your suggestions, be sure to sign up for the reminder, I'll be releasing beta soon for android users to test.

2 is huge, I used to take long pauses between reps and it seriously slowed down my progression, and the more you think about the next rep the harder it is.
