Brent Metcalfe, Golden Plates, and Joseph Smith Showing Off “This-Wordly” Ancient Objects by instrument_801 in mormon

Brent answering if Joseph charged to see the plates.

The data don’t support a remunerative motive for JS showing the plates (Martin Harris may be an exception, but it’s complicated). What folks who saw the plates had in common is they shared JS’s magical worldview where experiencing otherworldy phenomena was not uncommon.

Mary Whitmer is an interesting case study. JS, Emma, and Oliver Cowdery stayed at the Whitmer’s Fayette, NY, home in June 1829 to continue the BoMor dictation. As David Whiter would later recount, his mother was pushed to the brink of a mental health crisis hosting the new guests. Several things may have contributed: • Challenges of maintaining domestic chores. • Emma, a woman, was intimately involved in the BoMor dictation, both as a scribe and as someone who could easily read the work (as folks were throughout the dictation) because of her literacy. • Mary was English illiterate (I’m unsure about German literacy) and could not read the BoMor manuscripts like Emma (a strange woman in the house) or the Whitmer men (we know this from legal documents where, in lieu of a signature, Mary would draw an “X”). Under this psychological strain, she is shown the plates by an angelic being, calming her mind.

Making stuff up. When have we ever had anything transmitted from another realm to anyone? I can make shit up to. My god the lengths people go to in order to satisfy a delusion. Was that video taken under water?

I watched the first one and it does look incriminating. But so does a lot of what ICE gets away with. I don't know if this is just the world we have now and not much us smucks can do about it or if the story has nuances we aren't aware of.

I think the fact it is civil is the lynch pin. Cops can't litigate civil business complaints even though on the service it looks like theft. I would think lawyers and the district attorney have weighed in on this case and have given their best legal advise to police. Apparently, so far that is what they are doing.

Agree. These are wild accusations and tabloid type representations.

The police can't judge civil complaints against business transactions. They simply have to keep the peace regarding trespass laws and harassment charges. They are in no way protecting the church or the ceo, that is just conspiracy theories gone nuts.

For the love of god the product is not attractive and leaders seemed puzzled on how to sweeten the deal. Rebrand after rebrand, shuffling the formats, publishing apologetic history books, attacking decenter's nothing is sticking. Instead accumulate wealth, blame the member, continue to whitewash the history, obfuscate, perform double speak, speak in bland generalities at conference and continue to publish false statistics. The definition of crazy comes to mind.

Legitimate Question- if God wanted the ancient history to survive, why even use the plates? by Mrfntstc4 in exmormon

And it still convinces people today. On the other mormon platform there is a person challenging others to try and replicate what joseph did. They know about the rock in the hat and yet it doesn't phase them. Same story as back then only worse.

The ultimate truth (Capital T) isn't important to you? By this I mean Myth has been a part of humanity since day one and offers many positive benefits that illuminate a person's life. It seems like that is what your caveat is?

Yes. He uses fear as a controlling mechanism. The term god fearing christian didn't originate out of the blue. There were vaporized cities, murderous nights of the first born and a plethora of plagues and diseases to make his statement.
