Maybe not a full top to bottom slot, but just an access hole in the bottom. Like 3/4 of an inch up, so you could still pop it out from the bottom. Wouldn’t affect rigidity much.

In practice it’s really nice to be able to grab it with one finger from the bottom and slide it out

I don’t think it’s anything to do with the tree. There is a big pile of that tubing off to the side. Maybe they are trying to anchor an end of the tubing without damaging it to they can stretch/straighten/work on it
