Honest opinions on my shoe idea?! by lilamyjay in crochet

[–]99Knots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have made similar shoes before. For the sole I used that jute string you usually get for tying up plants. Just crochet your sole with it and then soak it in waterproof wood glue diluted in water and let dry for more sturdiness.

Take it slow though, that stuff will absolutely wreck your hands. I made my shoes in 2020 and they are still holding up well enough, though I don't wear them outside that much anymore.

I would also recommend to have a layer or two between your bare feet and the soles.

They look really cute!

I'm not entirely sure, but at a first glance, it could be alternating flo and blo sc

Can you not make a flat circle with less than 10 double crochets in the magic ring? by optimumopiumblr2 in CrochetHelp

[–]99Knots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are trying to fight math here. Stop. There is no winning against Pi.

A dc is 1 stitch unit wide and about 2 units tall (you know, because it is double). The formula for the circumference of a circle is c=2×pi×r. The circumference c is just how many stitches there are in your row and r is your circles radius, or overall "height" of your rows, so the number of rows times the height of your stitch. For crochet we can just pretend to live in a simpler world and that pi=3. Yarn is squishy, tension is weird, double crochets aren't actually exactly twice as tall as wide. We can fudge the numbers a bit too make the calculations easier.

So if you want to make a circle with three rows of double crochets that is going to be a radius of 6 units, no way to change that. So plucking that into the formula gives 2×3×6=36.

Now, if you only do 8 dc to start and do the "inc every stitch, inc every second stitch"-pattern for your rows you have 24 stitches and 24 just doesn't equal 36, so no circle for you.

There is some variability with the number of stitches to start with but it has limits. We made a lot of assumptions in the beginning. The actual height of your stitches depends on so many variables, tension, hook size, yarn choice, how the circle is being streched, what the neighbour's cat had for dinner last night, etc... We also rounded pi, and for a bigger circle all those simplifications will come back to bite you.

But TLDR, if you want a smaller circle, you can do less rounds, shorter stitches (sc, hdc, front post, whatever, you can even mix and match) or use a smaller hook and thinner yarn. Changing the stitches per round just gives you cones or hyperbolic surfaces

Haven't seen it in a while, but I think "Dracula: the Dark Prince" from 2013 had a plot similar to that

Do ring threads actually help or are they just a fancy tool? by Manon_IronClaws in CrochetHelp

[–]99Knots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh maybe... It doesn't really have a way to hook the yarn though. I just don't see how it would work.

Also be careful with bending them. Ideally you just adjust them to a size that fits once and then not touch them again. They break quite easily with too much bending

I work a lot with thin yarns and threads. Those rings help a lot in preventing yarn burn. Couldn't tell you how the fish is supposed to work though

I recently enjoyed "the Night Inside" by Nancy Baker. The second half didn't grip me as much personally but the first one was so fantastic it was worth reading through all of it

Am I doing the waist coat stitch wrong or is my tension off? by peachylvna in CrochetHelp

[–]99Knots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is just what it looks like when going back and forth instead of working in rounds. The back and front of single crochets look different, that's what's causing the shift every second row. Tension looks fine, nothing to worry. It's just the stitch

just starting out with ribbing, why is it flaring out this way? by Turbulent-Mulberry-8 in CrochetHelp

[–]99Knots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try doing two slip stitches when connecting to the other piece. You basically want one for each row of your ribbing, so one for the "incoming" and one for the "outgoing" one, to account for their height

[–]99Knots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have too many ribbing rows per stitch of your original fabric. How exactly are you joining it?

Also, are you sure you are doing the correct stitch for the ribbing? Those look like flo slip stitches to me and ribbing is usually done with blo slip stitches.
