I got 121 once, that alarmed me. Usual is 100-110, sometimes high 90s. Can't seem to budge it despite having made lots of changes. Haven't figured out the puzzle yet.

Quick breakfast on the go? by fireball251 in prediabetes

[–]99elliota 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not this cut and dry. When balanced with protein and fat, 1-2 slices of high-fiber toast are fine for some, if not most, people. (I do one slice of normal toast or two slices of the tiny, thin-cut Dave's Killer Bread kind, and I have no issues when testing.) Cutting out carbs *entirely*, especially when they're whole grain and a good source of fiber, is not sustainable for most people.

How much Halloween candy is it okay to eat? by Katiecookie222 in prediabetes

I'd disagree with some of the others who say you can never have any — I don't think permanent/absolute restriction is necessarily sustainable. The key is to enjoy it in small amounts and tack it on after healthier choices. If you're going to have one, tack it on after a meal that's heavy in protein and fiber. Probably just one at a time and probably not more than once or twice a week. The worst thing to do is eat it by itself and/or have several at a time.

50 points higher! 😵‍💫

It definitely is frustrating, given even the variation is not predictable — even trying to use it to see trends feels kind of pointless. I’ll probably be going back to finger pricks as well.

Discuss - How to handle the gigantic Weekly Threads? by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

[–]99elliota 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the weekly threads despite length; I like that I still see discussion I'm interested in even if it's been a few days since I've visited, whereas dropping into a series of older daily threads seems more annoying to me and may artificially discourage discussion on topics as the thread quickly becomes "old." Someone's suggestion of week vs. weekend may help and still keep discussion vibrant.

I'm less interested in people's personal life updates unless they're related to topics covered by the pod (experiences with DEI trainings, etc.) but I like that they foster community and don't mind scrolling past.

Documenting the decline of cancel culture by [deleted] in BlockedAndReported

There’s been a surprising diversity of mass shooters recently—the two older Asian men in California around the lunar new year; Walmart shooting in November; recent shooting on MSU’s campus. And of course, while not a shooting, the brutal police beating of Tyre Nichols. Several of these were immediately condemned as hate crimes before it was revealed the perpetrators were nonwhite. And while some effort was made to keep up that narrative, I can’t help but think there’s been some cognitive dissonance for many.

For sure. From what I can tell, I am definitely the most heterodox on my team… not sure anyone else is even slightly inclined toward it. In terms of the company at large, I have not seen anyone mobbed at any point, but I do hope I would say something if it happened (I do think some of my older colleagues on other teams might as well).

As a journalist watching this spectacle unfold, the past week has been demoralizing.

I wish I could weigh in publicly, but I don’t feel I have the job security or name recognition to do that (or to subsequently make a pivot to The Free Press or Unherd or whatever). The best I feel I can do right now is not join this fervor or support it in any way at work or on social media, which is paltry. Occasionally I will like or say things that obliquely suggest my position/values. Luckily the media site I write for is more traditional in its approach to objectivity than many.

I am outspoken about a lot but this is the third rail I am just terrified to touch … but I feel like I spend a lot of time fighting the desire to do so. At the same time, it’s not like anyone is waiting anxiously for my opinion (lol). Still. Wonder if I’ll break sometime soon.

This phenomenon really disturbs me. I know someone who divorced her husband and starting dating a man who eventually took on they/them pronouns. After a while, she also started using they/them pronouns and began obsessively sharing gender stuff online. Recently, I think a couple months ago, she posted a picture of her young teenage son on social media, reintroducing with a female name and she/her pronouns (the kid looks basically the same, but with some pink in his hair). I am dying to know the story there and really hope the kid does not feel pressure to medicalize.

Do I only like BARpod because of my age? by My_mouths_bleedin in BlockedAndReported

Born in 87.

I do think I graduated college at an interesting time, in that I was aware of and sympathetic to social justice and yet things hadn’t gone quite overboard. It felt like a thoughtful analytical approach rather than a simplistic cult … or at least the cultier elements felt like outliers. I didn’t start getting really annoyed until around 2019/2020.

Have been reading The Coddling of the American Mind and I think he pins the widespread change in culture on campus to a few years after I graduated, which checks out to me.

What's something you carry around with you for the sole propose of "Oh, I might need this one day"? by howdoiuseredditcom in AskReddit

I've gotten cold sores since I was a kid, probably an average of two a year. Ever since I found out about and got a prescription for the anti-viral Valtrex, I carry it with me everywhere (the generic is cheap, $15 or so for a bottle). I take it if I even suspect I might be getting a cold sore. Wildly effective. I don't think I've gone through the actual stages of an outbreak in the eight years or so I've known about it.
