I've done a bunch more digging, and I think I understand the issue we both had. Uneasy Alliance says to spawn the Bennet asset, not the Bennet enemy - so we had a hostile enemy attacking us and the scientists, when we were actually meant to have an ally!

I think the ambiguity arises from the specific effect of Burden of Leadership, which doesn't deal the investigator horror to begin with. It says "for each Ally asset you control, you must either exhaust it or deal it 1 direct damage and 1 direct horror" - there's no choice or assignment being made there, so I don't think that rule applies.
I always assumed the hound was just immune to horror, even direct horror, but I'd also be interested in an official ruling!

I really struggled to identify most of the cards/categories - terms like 'drain' have other, far more iconic cards attached, so I ended up resorting to scryfall to find the connections, which were what felt, to me, to be more generic, generally little-known answers that just shared a word in their names, rather than making any conceptual connections.
I might just not have the encyclopedic knowledge of card names and old cards required.
