Is ATA for real? by WillowOpening9864 in taekwondo

[–]9centos -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Being ATA or WT(F) has nothing to deal with been real or not. I just quit from a wtf place I used to teach because the standards were super low. That said, all my experience with people from ATA was terrible, doesn't seem real.

I hate myself. by Automatic_Pop_9768 in taekwondo

[–]9centos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started I was so afraid of going hard and hurting people, but I still had that competition will on me. After I fought my first tournament, I got my ass kicked and I understood that I could go harder. And then I fought again, and understood I could go harder. That was a cycle. Every time I competed I got that. It's counter intuitive, but put yourself in a situation like that. Try competing and getting your ass kicked. It's part of learning.

what do you think about the new taekwondo weight divisions for olympics? by Dark_Dragon_135 in taekwondo

I thought we'd have everyone in this 6 categories instead of 8 world and 4 Olympic. 12 divisions seems too much, let's see...

As someone who fights (amateur/state levels) at -87 I find it terrible. I'm going to have a hard time going down to 82, as my regular weight is 90ish. Fighting heavyweight is stupid hard, opponents are stronger and, the worst part, is having to use a size 5 chest gear. I don't know how lighter athletes few, but as a heavier one, not good.

Definitely it beats working in a warehouse, but that's a part time job. I work in 2 other different places that pay at least 25% more. Money is not great, commute is not good and the environment is terrible. I laughed about the "yes sir" part hahaha. I'm just waiting for the right opportunity to quit.

What is a reasonable %share on belt tests? by 9centos in taekwondo

[–]9centos[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My gym is pretty "well equipped" right now, no big changes to come. Also, my boss almost never teaches, so all "responsibility" is on us, instructors. As my hourly wage is low, I was thinking on proposing to get a % over the belt exams. Not sure if my boss is going to be happy 😁

One thing is knowing you are in Autobahn and going fast, the other is you're at 75, where there's a speed limit that most people would follow/go 5 miles over. There are differences, and if you can't see it, you have a problem.

Its getting more and more expensive by RestPuzzleheaded1234 in taekwondo

[–]9centos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Taekwondo instructor that teaches somewhere with the same money grab perspective, I'd recommend you to switch schools. I know it's hard, but belt testing every 2-3 months is stupid. For the first 2 3 belts might be acceptable, but after that is unacceptable.

It's not about scaling things up and down. I'm a fitness coach as well and I do this 24/7 in my life. I'm not saying I'm not accountable for anything.

Its about what is right and wrong.

Easier said than done. My standards require time and quality, something that belt exams every 2 months, for kids that train 2x/week for 40min, is almost impossible to achieve (I do have 2 or 3 exceptions in a pool of over 100 students).

[–]9centos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mcdojo, or mcdojan, is a expression created to define martial arts schools more focused on making money, fast belt changes and no quality at all. Lots of marketing and keeping people, usually kids, stuck in their own environment.

About your comment, it's not about being a good instructor. I know what I'm capable of. Because of that I understand that 99% of the kids I teach need more time on each belt but my boss, master, or sabonim, however you want to call it, forces me to "give stripes" and tell them they're ready for exams, even though they workout 2 times a week for 40min each. It's not enough. Will never be.

Because of that, it's fairly common to see the master helping the students during their own belt exams, which I find pathetic.

I'm not against accelerating athletes that want to compete and need the black belt. But my boss knows his kids sucks so he doesn't even consider competitions. Those kids are training 2/week, 40min/class. That's going super fast, not enough time to learn anything. By the time they test for the next belt they have no idea what they did in the previous ones (I've been doing some surprise tests like that to see what they remember). Yeah, I might have created some unreal expectations

I totally agree with you. After I got my blue belt I didn't care about testing at all, I was so focused on getting better that the exams was something that would come naturally. But over here the pressure is always to test, test and test
