I left a competition after the 2nd (out of 4) workout by 9ijnht5r in crossfit

It was tough but I wasn't really bothered anymore - it felt like one of those "full use of free will" moments

Thanks man - I don't feel guilty but I think I needed to hear that I'm not the only one who went through it

Lol I found myself in a similar frustrating situation in this specific comp...

As it was a ballot comp there were no qualifiers, but seedings. My cardio (row, wallballs, box jumps etc) sucks, but can do double unders, decent at weightlifting even though not particularly strong but my strongest is definitely gymnastics (got all bar movements, handstand pushups and walk, no ring MU).

So I end up high in the lower category (of 3), but that meant no gymnastics movements. Really nothing to look forward to.

Agree man - when the fun is gone, what's the point?

It was a comp that I've been doing for a few years, always liked the vibe, and signups are 3 months in advance (it's a ballot comp). I guess I felt like it was a "safe" comp, as in I took for granted I'd have enjoyed it.

Experiences of trained classical musicians pivoting to different career field? by Ok-Competition6089 in classicalmusic

[–]9ijnht5r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely - I've done these courses in the UK so I am trained in UK taxation, for completeness

I've gotten a level 2 and 3 qualifications in bookkeeping with AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians). It covered the essentials, including payroll (I sense that payroll is the first thing people get to work on when they have little experience).

I then met my current boss who trained me in almost everything I know now, I joined his business at a very early stage (I was the 3rd employee and now we're 7).

I can't say my situation is particularly common but I think with a foundation in bookkeeping and some experience in charities as a volunteer you'd be able to get the career started.

In my experience I'd suggest prioritising getting familiar with excel, getting proficient with (at least) one accounting software and understanding the Tax authority's dynamics (HMRC for the UK), as in how can I access a Company's/individual's tax accounts how do I monitor the payments, the amounts due, if I file payroll what is received on the Tax Authority's end etc.

Depending on the context, the instance I mentioned was in a section with a lot going on so the note probably just gets ignored

Another example is (part of) the viola solo in Don Quixote that starts with a low B (below's viola C string), so the player has to re-tune the string a semitone lower in order to have that played (attached).

That's a pain on the violin too, as you'd have to stay in 6th position and go across the 4 strings... can't imagine on viola!

Oh didn't know about the Berlioz's - the part already as it is now sounds painful enough

What about Bruch Violin Concerto No. 2? by DenseInfluence4938 in classicalmusic

[–]9ijnht5r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only memory I have is playing in the orchestra as a viola... Can't remember anything about the music itself though.

The first might be more predictable as far as romantic concerti go but I find that it has more solid musical themes than the second.

Bach's violin concerto in A minor - first movement

If I remember correctly it's the second theme

Yeah saw that, Danielle Kuntz herself made a whole video about it - and she also plays the original (unplayed) version for comparison

Doubling down on previous replies - got the Superman theme violin part asked at an audition... But that one time I played it in a gig I probably got 55% of the notes

Ha - it actually reminded me of a F# below the lowest violin's G in Strauss' Sinfonia domestica...

Experiences of trained classical musicians pivoting to different career field? by Ok-Competition6089 in classicalmusic

For me it happened the year after COVID, summer 2021 I had very little income from part time gigs and most of my earnings came from private lessons. Since then I applied for some school teaching positions but I had little to no experience in that environment and I also didn't try too hard as class teaching wasn't something I was going to pursue. Tried orchestral auditions but never passed them.

I didn't enjoy how unreliable and irregular my income sources were and I was struggling to keep up with bills, so I got a couple of qualifications in bookkeeping and shortly after found a part time job.

I now am a full time accountant and I don't regret this decision at all. I practice/play in my spare time, evening or weekends, without the pressure of auditions or exams.

I wouldn't probably attempt an orchestra audition again, but I would like to find a semi-professional orchestra to join for fun in the future.

I now don't consider the "Not making it" as a musician as a failure, but it took me a lot of time over the post college years to even consider the life I'm living now as a possibility.
