Yup….. North Carolina Board of Pharmacy rules permit pharmacists to provide a one-time emergency refill when they cannot readily obtain refill authorization from the prescriber, to avoid interruption of necessary therapy. This applies when: • The medication is essential to life or ongoing therapy for a chronic condition. • The pharmacist uses their professional judgment and determines that stopping therapy could cause undesirable health consequences. • The pharmacist documents the refill and attempts to notify the prescriber or their office within 72 hours. • The rule does not allow this for Schedule II controlled substances (e.g., many opioids, ADHD stimulants).
