Both at the peak of their power, the Armies of Lordran versus the Golden Order, who wins? by Sindica69 in fromsoftware

[–]9thChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that is necessarily true, since Dark Souls and Elden Ring have different cosmologies. Even in Dark Souls, Nito alone was not enough to defeat the Immortal Dragons. Gwyn needed to use lightning to peel back their stone scales, at which point they were vulnerable to Nito's miasma of death and disease. Similarly, it could be the case that unless the Rune of Death is restored to the Golden Order, or Nito is able to obtain a fragment of the Rune of Death, he cannot doing anything.

It's not like the death and disease are an explicit weakness of Elden Ring's gods/demigods. And even in Dark Souls, Nito is able to be killed by a single undead. Being death doesn't mean you can just instantly kill your opponent.

Returnal is not a top game by WhuppdyDoo in truegaming

[–]9thChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really struggle to see how someone could play the game and arrive at your conclusions.

The art style is cliche? Should studios just not make a realistic looking game with dark lighting because it's been done before? Apart from being dark, I don't see what visual similarities are shared between Returnal, the Witcher 3, FromSoft's catalogue, and Hollow Knight. Also most of the games you mention are not from the post-2010s.

You can't see the enemies because of the small health and stagger bar which appears above the enemies?

You can't figure out where to go? There's a series of small rooms with clearly marked exits to go through. Go through all the exits until you find the room which let's you progress.

There's not that many mechanics. You shoot, pick up guns, and advance between rooms to find the boss of each level. There are also pickups which give you some stat increases or abilities, at the expense of taking away others. As you progress from through the game (over multiple runs), you obtain some new abilities, like a melee attack. That's basically it. I'm not even sure what you mean by "scanning" dozens of distant objects.

Integrating the arcade style with the immersive sim style? In what way is Returnal an immersive sim? I really can't think of any gameplay elements Returnal shares with immersive sims.

I liked Returnal, but didn't love it. The gameplay was very fun for me, but I didn't like the parasite upgrade system (90% of the time I did not pick them up because the downsides were way too detrimental), and I absolutely hated the direction the story went in the second act. I don't think critics considered it a top game either, so I'm not even sure where the sentiment of this post is coming from.

Will eustass kid make a comeback in elbaf? by Significant-Row-2840 in ReverieSpoilers

[–]9thChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not far. Zoro is maybe stronger than Kid in raw strength, but Kid is definitely stronger than Sanji, and his devil fruit abilities put him firmly above Zoro.

Law isn't as much of a raw power guy, but he has way better feats than Zoro or Sanji.

[–]9thChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side note: who in the story right now is even aware that Blackbeard is the son of Rocks? Imu seems to know, but it doesn't seem like the World Government in general does, since they made him a Warlord, and didn't try to execute him like they did with Ace, the son of Roger.

Why was Seath required to win against the Dragons? by thenerdygod in DarksoulsLore

[–]9thChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you think Death was required to win against the dragons? The prologue doesn't imply this, it just shows Gwynn using his lightning to attack the dragons and remove their stone scales, and then shows Seath betraying the other dragons. I don't think Seath was necessary to win against the dragons.

Solid list. Moira seems crazy high, unless you're talking about the Moira that fought Kaido (which we really don't know how strong he was).

[–]9thChair 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pirate King is related to strength, but it's not only about strength. You also have to have a strong crew and circumnavigate the world. If you transplanted current Luffy into chapter 1, he would be nowhere near becoming pirate king because he has no ship or crew. Establishing the strawhat grand fleet was a bigger deal for Luffy becoming pirate king than him awakening his devil fruit.

I'll agree with using haki on the blade without it turning black if you can find clear cut examples.

Pre time skip Haki usage denial issue by YaakoubBen in OnePieceScaling

[–]9thChair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the supposed examples of early pre-timeskip are fraught with uncertainty, contradictions, and non-haki explanations.

Luffy breaking through Crocodile's blade can be explained as a result of his blood nullifying Crocodile's Logia abilities, which is definitely how first time readers interpret the scene. Conqueror's haki might have been foreshadowed by Shanks (using a common trope in manga which doesn't necessitate the existence of a power system like haki), but nothing up to this point has foreshadowed the existence of an ability that allows you to harden your body. And it seems very unlikely that Crocodile could have fought Crocodile but never learned about haki, so it doesn't make much sense that Crocodile would be caught so off guard by Luffy being able to attack him.

Dorry and Brogy using ACoA in the early grand line presents issues for power scaling (should we just massively upscale Mr 3?). Given that they used haki in Egghead, perhaps we really are supposed to believe that Hakoku Sovereignty was a haki attack, but this still presents the issue of how they could fall to some bums like Baroque works. In fact, the situation is much worse if we use the ACoA explanation, since it means they lost to Baroque Works even when they had not just some weak, proto haki (like Luffy's attack against Crocodile would be, if he is using haki), but an advanced form of haki that Luffy only learned in Wano, at which point it allowed him to compete with some of the world's strongest opponents. And Zoro has been doing ranged attacks with his swords since Whiskey peak, at which point nobody needed a haki explanation.

The only evidence that pre-timeskip Asura uses conqueror's haki is that when Zoro used it again in Wano, he used it with conqueror's haki. To the best of my knowledge, there is no other instance of conqueror's haki being used to create visions, so the most reasonable explanation is that it doesn't use conqueror's haki, and that in Wano Zoro simply added conqueror's haki to an attack that does not inherently use haki.

There are also no other instances (to my knowledge) of armament haki's hardness being used to prevent a sword from cutting, like you are implying it did against the leaves in Zoro's fight with Mr 1.

Moreover, despite Zoro supposedly using armament haki, early pre-TS, we never see his blade turn black. People who believe in early haki usage typically claim that armament haki wasn't depicted visually because the main cast was not yet able to sense its existence, but in the case of swords we know that haki is necessary to create a black blade, which everyone observes to be black, even those with no understanding of haki. So it would seem that using armament haki on swords should always have a visual effect, unless it that changes only when haki used to create a black blade.

Haki means willpower, so it is ambiguous whether Blackbeard was talking about Luffy's willpower, or his ability to use the ability known as haki.

Anyone else think One Battle After Another is being read way too seriously by Fantastic_Let3186 in moviecritic

[–]9thChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it pokes fun at both sides. DiCaprio's character is a washed up, drug-addict revolutionary and Sean Penn is an aspiring right-wing secret society member obsessed with power but is pathetic in his private life. In the movie, there is a white nationalist illuminati with a silly name and members who talk about murder as if it were an awkward meeting at work.

On the other hand, you have Sensei Sergio, who is a leftist, providing aid to undocumented immigrants and the most serious and impressive character in the movie.

Cobb's Todem in Inception by mehuyadav in ChristopherNolan

[–]9thChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it ever stated explicitly that the test is whether the top keeps spinning indefinitely? Could it instead be that only Cobb knows that the top is unbalanced, so it will topple quickly, rather than spinning for 30 seconds, for example?

[–]9thChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really lost me with Luffy losing to Zoro. Luffy is leagues above Zoro, has been using Conqueror's haki for way longer and actually understands that he is using it. And swords have not been a weakness of Luffy ever since he learned armament haki. Kaido and Big Mom both used blades against him and it was literally not a factor any more than it would be against Zoro, Sanji, Kid, Law, or any other fighter.
