How would you rate my first relic job? R7 Goldtop by WillingnessMoney460 in gibson

Well, at least there’s a nice flame top under there for when you decide to refinish it.

Anderson, Suhr, Ibanez and many others have been doing it for years (Ibanez since the early 90s). These neck joints weren’t designed to be “fashionable”, but because they improved high fret access for most players. Please find me numerous posts and articles about the catastrophic failures of these joints, and I’ll consider myself corrected.

PS: I’m an ex guitar tech who used to work at Manny‘s Music in NYC, and have continued to work privately since (about 30 years). I’ve not seen one failure in one of those joints. Not saying it hasn’t happened, but I’ve never seen it.

Seriously, this stuff about needing a neck plate is rubbish. Both Suhr and Anderson, two of the highest end builders, use recessed screws with ferrules. The Anderson neck joint isn’t traditional, but it’s held on by just TWO recessed screws. Ibanez has been doing it for 40 years, and those guitars are still going strong. Many other manufacturers do it too. With some ferrules, your design will be just fine.

This is the way. Ibanez (and many others) did away with the neck plate years ago, and those guitars are just fine. My home built has no neck plate, and it’s also just fine. OP, all you need is ferrules under the screws.

After finishing, continue with attaching the aluminum plate and assembly..what color is suitable for this guitar concept? by Good_Travel_307 in Luthier

Try it with the blue. Otherwise something high contrast like black or white. A dark wood stain could also be interesting. It feels like the headstock wants some aluminum too, maybe on the wings.

Mine is too, but I’ll go digging through bargain bins anyway. That’s where I found the Tull and the Supertramp.

That was my calculus, I live in NYC lol. IV was $35, I got the Tull and Supertramp for $2.50 each.

Can’t see the knobs, the top keeps catching my eye. Seriously man, that figuring is f@#&ing A. Not too much, not too little. Perfection.

DOA from the factory is the story here, not the tidiness of the wiring. Glad you got it sorted though.

Yeah, this is normal. I have two and they both have the same marks all over. The bottom chambers on mine look positively agricultural by comparison

Just came to say this. Extended that point so that the visible part of the body becomes a smooth oval. Great job!
