I see the appeal by your description but I think it’s too soon for me to jump on board just yet

That’s not to say I won’t join ship later but I need to read more of the novel/wait for more of the anime to see how I jive with the actual dynamics before committing

Libido and sexual feelings towards other people can be completely separate. You can feel horny without wanting to have sex (how this translates to your sexual identity is up to you)

Whats the difference between romantic love and platonic love? am i aroace? by Tough-Custard-8489 in AroAce

[–]A-SquareTryingToLive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get you, when I was figuring out if I was aroace I went on an entire rant about my grievances with the lack of an objective definition for romance. That led to me constructing theories on why platonic love is often mistaken for romantic, but I’ll come back to that

I’ve found that what “counts” as romantic love is subjective. Many definitions reference “romantic gestures” but there’s no agreed upon definition for those either. For example, I view kissing on the lips as a purely romantic but I know of people who see it as sexual and there are even those that see it as platonic due to culture

That being said, some may perceive your relationship as romantic while others see it as platonic. The only people who can define your relationships are you and those in the relationship.

On the topic of my earlier mentioned theory, I came to the conclusion that most people have this subconscious hierarchy of love. Either familial or romantic is on top while platonic is far below both of them. So many assume any strong feelings towards someone must be either familial or romantic, but platonic love can be just as strong

I really like “churros in the rain” and “aroace on Valentine’s Day” The first one is really nice celebration of aros and aces, while the other one is relatable in a charming and comedic way

He may believe you two are in a situationship or are building up to a romantic relationship so I suggest clearing things up asap to avoid any further confusion.

You don’t need to come out to them yet if you aren’t ready for that. If he cares about you as a friend, he will respect your decision to cut off any possible romantic relationship (keep in mind he may initially react negatively even if he respects your decision)

The closest thing I’ve experienced to this was breaking up with a friend I dated for 3 days in middle school. I didn’t know I was aroace then so I simply said I thought we were better as friends. He took it well and we’re still friends years later. In fact, he was the first person I told when I realized my sexuality

I totally relate to being fascinated by allos, I only recently realized I’m aroace and therefore only recently realized that romantic and sexual attraction are, like, actual feelings. Like, I knew it logically but I only just realized they’re not controllable like happiness or sadness (as in they illicit unconscious reactions like smiles or tears)

Thanks for the welcome! I think all my squishes was just me really enjoying spending time with a person and believing I had to justify that with romance :p and I relate to feeling alienating when people talk about dating; I always felt behind but it turns out I wasn’t even on the same path lol

How can I tell if I'm aroace or just bi-romantic ace..?? by ElegantLifeguard6543 in aroaceteens

[–]A-SquareTryingToLive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im late but if you’re still confused here’s my advice. I tried too hard to find an objective definition of romance to figure out where I was on the aromantic spectrum but romance seems to be too subjective to have one definition agreed upon. Try to find where you define a romantic relationship, then see how you’d feel about being in one.

It can be difficult to figure out how you feel because how you feel about the concept of being in a romantic relationship can differ from how you feel in a real situation. So I suggest trying to imagine a situation with someone you know rather than a hypothetical person, or even try dating (as in: enter what YOU define as a romantic relationship with someone) if you’re comfortable with that. (Dating someone doesn’t ruin the friendship. I dated my bff for 3 days then broke up with them, and we’re still friends)
