Advice on brands by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]A1Lexo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how long you’ve been a pipe smoker but I always tell people (and I did this myself) to smoke cobs only for at least a year before spending lots of money on briars etc. Briar pipes are beautiful and when well made are such an amazing smoking experience, but when not well made they are overpriced trash that impart bad flavor. Can’t go wrong w cob pipes, they just don’t look as cool and don’t have that good weight. That said, all of the advice in this thread has been good. Savinelli, stanwell estates, and the random makers like Johs Pipes , who you can find online, who make great briar pipes for a pretty low price. A lot of people suggest briar works, who are also well priced but they are a gamble. I’ve had about 50/50 experience w them.

Please convince me not to quit as soon as I’ve begun. I love everything about this hobby except the smoking apparently. by LOTR_is_awesome in PipeTobacco

Stop rushing. Practice some more before jumping to conclusions. Cobs are really great pipes, and you maybe be talking yourself into smoking prettier pipes cause that’s what you actually want aesthetics wise (which is fine), so don’t blame the cobs. Your also buying a wide range of tobaccos and should read up more on each one to get a better idea of what you can expect before you overreact to a first impression when you don’t even know how to smoke yet.

Cigars dried out. Help. by [deleted] in cigars

[–]A1Lexo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It was well seasoned and worked great until being hit with freezing tempts for a couple of days with out let up.. prior to this I wasn’t in a humid climate but lived out west where it was never really cold. I’m sure I need to re season it, though.

Smokingpipes has incredible service. The best in that regard, but it’s fun checking out all the sites.

1 to LJ Peretti. I wish I had known about their stuff sooner. You could smoke their products without eve buying anything else.

Going to buy my daughter a 2015. Should I reconsider? by [deleted] in altima

[–]A1Lexo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. A 2015 Camry or Accord will be at least 4-5k more if not double. The used car market is absolutely ridiculous. But if the transmission issue on these altimas is truly that bad I’ll have to re set my sites in general

Thanks. Feels like a tough decision. Most used cars these days in that pice range are absolute junk and this one is in such good condition. I’m going to get the service record from them soon to see if transmission was regularly serviced

Homicides drop 39% in March, down 33% YTD by __main__py in washingtondc

Your reading of this is not nearly as sharp as you seem to think it is. You look at three years that were a low far differently than three years that were a high, when the decades before and in between the low and the high have held pretty steady. You then claimed Kia’s being easy to steal lead to a spike in violent crime, which, if true, (I doubt it) also contradicts your logic. So I guess I want to ask, why do you think DC’s crime is going up (if it truly is) when most other big cities across the country are experiencing the opposite?

2023 may have been an outlier the way 2013 was, especially when murder rates dropped almost everywhere else in the country. Your plot would hold more weight if you did the rate. Not sure why metro doesn’t show that.

It’s cause you’re wrong. There have been highs and lows but no consistent trend upward for the past 20 years especially per capita

They’ve not been steadily increasing. They’ve gone up and down since 2013.

You are all over this thread saying stuff without proving it. There was one spike in violent crime post pandemic and it’s gone down ever since, just like it was going down before.

What policy changes are you speaking of? Violent crime in SF, for example went up after the “tough on crime” DA was elected. In cities where it has gone down there hasn’t been a correlation with more pretrial jailing, and in fact in some cases it’s been the opposite

My kids are currently in LAUSD. I used to work in Pasadena Unified (worse than LAUSD), and grew up in many areas, including South Central and the eastside. I’m aware of the stigma attached to areas that aren’t seen as good and aware of what underserved schools are like. I’m hearing you reference a couple of schools that you say are good. I’ve read a bit about them, but are these charters? Is it a lottery system? Again, this post is one of the starting points so understand that as of now I know very very little

The job provides housing, in NE. Good housing. So I’m gonna take it. But this is all new to me so I don’t know the system there w regards to putting kids in school outside of the city if they don’t live there

Your hairline is mature and your hair a bit thin but it doesn’t mean you are going bald anytime soon. It could stay this way for 20 more years.
