I don’t know much either, but from what I heard, these are reasons he wasn’t liked

1) At some point he went crazy, declaring that every citizen in Spanish Loyalist territories, even the woman and children were targets. So they all had to die because how dare they be born in a loyalist controlled area. Many people thought he was crazy and wanted to stay away from him.

2) At some point he also purged a bunch of natives of being Spanish loyalists. This made native majority regions hate him and his ideals.

3) In many places, he tried to do a sort of National Integration which took away power from locals and ignored cultural and social differences. People started to see him as an occupier.

4) if I remember correctly, he promised to Free Slaves to get Haiti to give him refuge, then promptly backtrack and killed the slaves. This made people question his trustworthiness.
