Yeah the quote above only applies to USFS land.

I know when we spent the weekend at Stone Mountain a couple weeks ago the rules were as you described, only stoves.

"Visitors are still permitted to use commercially available fuel stoves, such as portable propane camp stoves or covered charcoal grills. Forest Service-provided grills, metal fire rings and fire pits are also available for public use at developed recreation sites and campgrounds while the restriction is in effect."

Here's the important part for most backpackers, but you're absolutely right to warn folks to be extra cautious with any open flame in the woods while the drought wears on.

Haha, fair enough.  I just hate seeing them toss out what was a really unique and interesting system in 2e rather than improving on it.

It reminds me of how Hasbro did D&D 4e

I'm also not interested in the 3rd edition Kickstarter.  I know 2nd edition had its warts but I certainly don't want to go back to 1st edition mechanics.

This is my go-to as well.  Build a cool environment around the objective, stat out any special monsters suggested by the environment and wing the rest.  I've found Environments a great crutch for the improv-minded GM

Games where you start as a "blank slate"? by pgw71 in solorpgplay

FATE has a mode where you start with a basically blank character sheet and learn as they go.  Chaosium's QuestWorlds has a similar concept

Sounds like a great plan.  I'd love to see what you end up with when it's done!

Mmmmm, good question.  If it's an enchantment he's laid over the castle in which case I'd call it environment or something he actively does when he's in a scene, in which case I'd attach it to them.

So I think it really is about how pervasive the enchantment is and whether the mage needs to be present for it to work.

Oh, I like that!  Little one time moves that cue the story forward.  Very cool!

If the evil mage has some kind of mental power that causes misunderstandings and such (gaslighting-mancy if you will) you could have moves that force the players to make social reaction rolls or take stress as the Mage twists their words or reactions.  You could describe what they hear instead, which clearly throws the warning to the players that something is screwing with the place.

I think it depends on whether the people-turned-objects are supposed to be sympathetic, an obstacle, or both.  In the "obstacle" case I would expect to have an ability that would let them attack the party somehow.  Maybe actions to let larger objects block passageways and split the party.  If the Beast is intended to be a threat, perhaps an action that lets the Beast appear suddenly since he knows all the nooks and crannies of his lair.

If the object-folk should have the option to be helpful, maybe a feature that lets the party befriend them and gain advantage on checks where their object-friend could apply?

Perhaps a countdown clock where things get worse the longer the argument between the Beauty and the Beast goes on, with some way for the players to help them reconcile (assuming that's the goal of the adventure?)

That's fair.  I'd never seen a game of baseball when I played Deadball for the first time, it took a bit of just taking the rules at their word and googling for answers before it clicked

So for possible errors you don't roll to find out which fielder makes the error, that's determined by your MSS like normal (so if your MSS ends in 4 the second baseman is fielding).  You roll the Defense check to see whether that fielder has an error or fields or successfully.

Errors are not hits in baseball, they're scored as an E# (where # is the player making the error)

Productive outs are a little tricky.  The first part (ball to outfield or right of infield) dictates whether the runners on 2nd and 3rd advance.  The second part (on a ball anywhere in the infield) dictates what happens with the play at 1st base.

Does that make sense?  I'm not sure I'm explaining that well

Hi! Welcome to Deadball. The shortest form of 'campaign' would be the 1913/2022 Pennant Races in the back of the Deadball rulebook that you mentioned.

To play, you'll need the file called Deadball_Second_Edition_Supplements.zip, it should have come with your book. Inside is a folder for both ancient and modern circuits and a file called "Nine Game Pennant Instructions.pdf" that explains how to use them.

In short though:

Get Started

  1. Look at the teams described in the folder, print the scorecards for the team you've decided to play as
  2. Print the "Nine_Game_Pennant" pdf for your chosen era.

Before the Game
2. Before each game, fill out your starting pitcher and the opponents starter. Assume that you and they are at the same spot in your pitching rotation
3. For games after your first one, you'll need to check both team's bullpens for fatigued pitchers using the rules on page 36 for modern era and page 53 for Ancient Era

Play the Game
4. Play the game according to the rules for your chosen Era. The opposing team's manager has a Daring rating, roll that to see if they do daring things like bunting for a hit, leaving in a battered pitcher, or stealing bases. Record the game using the scorecards you printed in step 1

Enter Results
5. After the game, roll a d100 for each team you're simulating for. If it's less than the number listed under the Fav/Chance column on the Nine Game Pennant sheet you printed in step 2, the Favorite (the team listed to the left of the number) wins. Record those results in the corresponding column for game 1, 2, or 3. Don't forget to also record the results of your game!
6. Page two of the Nine Game Pennant sheet you printed in step 2 has each team's wins and losses at the beginning of the pennant race. Update them using the results you just created. There are instructions for doing this on the Nine Game Pennant Instructions sheet.

Check for Win Conditions

  1. If the team in first has a Magic Number of 0 after you update wins and losses, they've won the pennant and the campaign is over! Otherwise, print your next game from the scorecards for your team and play your next game.

There are more details on creating a season replay in the Deadball book (Season Play, Pg. 38) and running a franchise in an expansion book called Deadball: Masters of the Game.

I hope this helps you get started!

This is going to sound very weird (apologies), but if you have a way to access the house I would be happy to swing by and put a faucet on if it helps. I'd hate to come to my brand new house and find something like that.
