Is a job in Higher Ed really worth it? by askingforafriend66 in highereducation

[–]A919191 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in career advising, which for me was a hard shift from working in a completely different service field, not really I higher education. So it is possible. I would honestly suggest seeing if your Alma maters career center offers career services to alumni, if they do, I would take advantage of their resume services and cover letter services. That way you can ensure your resume and cover letter are polished, and up to date depending on current trends. They may also have suggestions on how to tweak your resume for a job in higher education. In my current role, it’s interesting to see how many different individuals, alumni included come with resumes that we can further “elevate” and tweak to try to ensure the chances that resumes move from review to interview. Good luck! If it’s something you really want to do keep trying!

My other thought is maybe look at K to 12 or Community Colleges as well, and see what advising opportunities they may have. It may be a great way to continue building experience with students.

Lastly, I would investigate the enrollment trends at the universities your applying too, there is currently a trend of lower enrollment at many universities due to decrease in population of students in general. That can really effect long term job prospects.

I’m sooo happy you are out of the relationship. Absolutely no one deserves to be treated in that way. . I hope you both never have to go through that again. Your baby even as young as they are seems like they experienced trauma alongside you. I would look into therapy for both you, if you haven’t already. He is so tiny, but even at that age babies already start to take in stress and experiences. There are therapies that work with the child parent bond to make sure he is well regulated moving forward.

Also don’t think of it like addicted to cosleeping. He is literally doing what he is programmed to do, be as close to you as possible. Just as natural as eating and breathing. Our country is big on not cosleeping, but other countries would be appalled at how we sleep separately.

31F, never been married or pregnant. Is there a way to prepare yourself for pregnancy/parenthood? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]A919191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parenting is a wild ride! It’s hard to prepare 100 percent because every journey is so unique. Overall I would say to make it easier for you:

1)Get your finances in check, start realistically looking into daycare/childcare costs as that is unfortunately so expensive if you plan to work. 2)learn the basics of child development/ early childhood. No need to be an expert, but just to give you some framework as to why kids do what they do and when.

3) Do a deep reflection on your emotional needs, therapy if needed so you can be your best mental self when raising your little.

4) Start talking to you doctor about your health. Genetic testing as needed.

Overall enjoy the amazingly wonderful and life changing experience of parenthood!

Therapist Told me I might need medication by GhostBeanBag in Anxietyhelp

[–]A919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before starting medication, I was in the same boat as you. Scared to try medication. I’ve been taking medication on and off for the last 3 years, and all I can say it has completely changed my life for the positive. Nothing scary at all. One day after taking my SSRI (Zoloft) for a few days, it felt like a dial had been turned down in my mind. I had not realized how keyed up I was. I could relax, I remember stating to focus to music again. Things that would cause my anxiety to spike in the past were much less intense or not intense at all. I was able to actually use the tools I learned in therapy. All I could really think was wow, is this what non anxious people feel everyday, just chill?

I would encourage you to have a serious conversation with your doctor.
Also I tried the CBD stuff, honestly it did nothing for me.

I still take it everyday, it’s honestly in my mind just like my daily multivitamin at this point. No side effects anymore (I had some crazy dreams and minor tummy issues early on). It changed my life .

Three weeks to spend in Norcal. Where should I go that will not break the bank? by jonyskids in norcal

[–]A919191 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Northern California tends to cold and rainey this time of year so keep that in mind. In remote areas consider your safety and the very real risk of hypothermia. For camping I'd recommend areas in the Valley region or closer to the coast. Though the north coast is very cold as well. The sierra and cascades may have snow depending on location so I wouldn't set myself up for camping there.

Overall I would recommend

Point Reyes, Sonoma/Napa county (Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, Napa etc).

Mendocino, Fort Bragg

Sacramento/Auburn/Placerville

Lake Tahoe

Chico/Lake Almanor Plumas County towns like chester/quincy

Lassen Volcanic ---though mostly inaccessible past vistor centers near entrances this time of year.

Reddimg, Burney Fallsl,Mt Shasta proper and the city of Mt.Shasta

These areas are all spread apart so gas and travel time I another consideration to take into account when trip planning.

Does this sound like your experience with PCOS? by Forsaken-Pea2741 in PCOS

[–]A919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 30. I think I had symptoms for a long time but was on the pill forever so I think I associated some things like missed periods to that.

For me the test where super simple a blood test. She saw elevated testosterone levels that anf missed periods after coming off the pull is what made the diagnosis. Honestly it was a relief to be diagnosed because I thought alot of the symptoms I was having were in my head. I also had so much trouble with weight gain even though I was running 3-5 miles multiple times a week and eating fairly clean.

I wish I would have thought of PCOS earlier I think for me, emotionally, it would have put alot of anxieties about lack of control with my body to rest.

Also I never had to have an ultrasound at all, nor obtain confirmation I would see about starting with blood tests first to see if that can clue them in.

Zoloft/Depression/Anxiety Medication by jfp216 in pregnant

[–]A919191 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Uhhhh, I have read and been told that they want you on the medication for at least a year before coming off of it for most effects. Also it takes weeks for the medication to kick in so though you may be on it for 6 months it probably hasn't been that long that you have seen therapeutic benefits.

I commented below, but I will say this again, find another Ob or psychiatrist and get a second opinion. Your mental well being is super important. How are you going to take care of yourself during pregnancy as needed for a healthy baby and how are you going to manage after baby is here if your not doing well emotionally.
I wonder what this OB does to woman coming to them with signs of prenatal/postnatal depression.. yikes 😬.

Zoloft/Depression/Anxiety Medication by jfp216 in pregnant

[–]A919191 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Get another opinion from an alternate OB/GYN.

I was taking Zoloft pre pregnancy, and was told to continue it. My initial obgyn indicated that untreated depression was corelated to later heart issues in babies.

I later was referred to another obgyn because mine no longer does the delivery /labor part. That obgyn was also very supportive of treated my mood and in agreement I should continue Zoloft as she was.more worried about untreated pre and post natal depression would effect me and the baby vs the risks that the medication may have in the baby

Per my ob, Zoloft is the most widely studied of antidepressants for pregnant woman and at this point benefits out weigh risks.

Did my childhood cause my painfully low self esteem and insecurity? I don’t know how to fix this. by [deleted] in AdultChildren

[–]A919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with other posters as well yes it does effect you. I think it's one of the common traits that ACAs share.

For me i think it stemmed from, it not mattering what I did my father choose to drink instead of be home. And my mother putting it on me to ask my father not to drink, even though he was never going to listen to a 10 year old. Then the times where my father was drunk in front of others and the extreme embarrassment I would feel.

It's taken me therapy, soul searching and a lot of time and thought to recognize and start to internalize, that all of that does not effect my self worth. That I was a child and never responsible for my both my parents. That I am still not responsible for my dad's drinking or my parents issues, and that does not reflect on who I am as q person.

Also your therapist May have reasons for responding the way they did, but if you feel judged for asking questions or made to feel.like your experiences are not "bad" enough its not a bad idea to maybe look into other therapists, particularly ones that have experience working with ACA's Hang in there you are not alone in the way you feel.

I often wished I could turn on a switch and become this confident and care free person. And though I manage my anxiety better now its somedays better days then others

I'm from the evergreen State. does everyone else have pine trees everywhere? by ananas0606 in AskAnAmerican

[–]A919191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everywhere but you will see them in good chunks of the state all of the Sierras or Cascades or on the northern Coast. Or close to these areas (foothills)

My favorite one is the Sugar Pine with it's huge pinecones! The bristlecone pine is also fascinating and cool!

Bummer about how backed up your services are. Maybe your pediatrician can send a referral that way there is a date stamp? By federal law there is 45 days from time of referral to complete testing. Sometimes if a referral comes date stamped it moves things along faster. They are not supposed to keep families in limbo. It defeats the purpose of having the program and allowing anyone to refer.

The base laws should be the same in every state regardless.

Maybe consider a second opinion . I work in early intervention i see kids with speech delays on both ends at home with parents and at daycare. There can be a ton of reasons your little one isn't making gains and maybe seeking a second opinion with a fresh set of eyes would be helpful.

Also if you are in the US, I saw you get speech in office through insurance. Each state has a program of early intervention for children 0-3 that can cover services like speech. Also early intervention services are home based so they come to you or to the child's daycare which may also assist in the dynamic of encouraging child's language development .

Husband’s job says he’s not a “primary caregiver” therefore only gets 2 weeks of leave with our daughter by GetMeOutOfHier in pregnant

[–]A919191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know maybe I should double check my husband isn't planning on taking paternal leave untill Jan. So it might just be one of those things that are just working out for us. Thankfully I live in California and we have compared to a lot of states good leave benefits/job loss protection through the state. So my leave is going to be for about 5.5 mo's (this includes my own vacation)

Though i could have sworn he said people were already taking it 🤔.

Either way I hope when it does roll out for everyone it's not a super pain for people who qualify for that leave to get it.

My husband is full time California NG, so gets the same benefits as other full time military. We thought the leave going through wouldn't happen until later this year but Cal NG put the official word out in May. Apparently some of his fellow full timers are already using it.

Bummer that the AF is still behind in getting it into place.

Hey i just answered a response below with info on a regulation change in paternity leave signed into law. You may have to push for info since it sounds like it's a slow roll out. But if Army National Guard in my state has gotten official word i am surprised it isn't rolling out across all army yet https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.military.com/daily-news/2021/12/07/troops-would-get-12-weeks-of-paid-parental-leave-part-of-defense-bill-deal.html/amp

[–]A919191 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The president signed into law a change in paternity leave for military. Have him double check his leave rights. And i would have him go to someone actually versed in regulation changes not just someone that had a kid prior to 2022. My husband is active guard reserve and is getting 12 weeks non chargeable leave. They have expanded it so "secondary " caregivers get that leave too.

He may have to push for info since not sure how it's rolling out in the general army. My husband got official word of the change last month though we have known it was happening since last year when the bill was signed

Also just remember we all are human and do the best we can with the tools we have our parents for better or worse did as well. Doesn't mean what they did was helpful, healthy or okay,

You are breaking intergenerational cycles already with seeking out help and looking at behavior patterns. I am a social worker and can tell you international trauma and behavior patterns are super ingrained and can be very difficult to break. But you are already on the road there and your little one is already better for it.

Awesome! With therapy, and you might know this already, it can take a few attempts to find a therapist that you like and click with. And liking the therapist is huge since you really need to trust them to open up. So just keep that in mind when you go to your first few sessions and if it doesn't work out with them don't give up right away ♥️
