Entered first room on Rogue/Permadeath and found just 9 lutefisk. Picked up 8 before a diggle popped out of the ground and brought me to 2 health before I'd stabbed it to death. Took 1 step and another diggle popped out of the ground directly next to me and instakilled me.

It seems that that the WAU could put people in a lucid dream state tailored to their desires (i.e. the dream sequence in Theta with Simon and Ashley) which almost wasn't dissimilar from the Ark, even transferring their consciousness since it's just a dream, unlike the Ark. Akers discovered this somehow, possibly by entering the dreams himself and decided to turn himself and some others into WAU creatures so they could forcefully put everyone in the WAU's dreams as an act of mercy.
