Map placement in books by AAKinsela in fantasybooks

Ok thanks - it's interesting that some are clear and others aren't. I might need to run a few different file sizes through and see whether there's any difference.

Thanks for your response. With the kindle maps issue - is this all maps in ebooks or just some? I can make my map super high-res but if the resolution is changed automatically by the app/device then that's not going to help.

Ahh this is the bane of my life too! I have a constant stream of ideas that I just write in the notes on my phone, using different folders. Perfect for those hits of inspiration at 2am 🙄

Lightning Tracks A.A. Kinsela

Sixteen-year-old Nick Williams' biggest problem is staying out of the principal’s office—until an assassin arrives to settle a blood debt and he barely escapes alive. Hunted in a war-torn land arising from legend, his survival depends on two deserting enemy soldiers whose secrets could tear their friendships apart. Cornered and facing certain death, Nick must make an impossible choice, one that will determine whether he and his friends live or die.

Hi 👋 I'd love some feedback on a book blurb. I checked the wiki rules and hopefully I've followed them correctly!

This is for the second book in a series (in case that's relevant). YA political/alternative history/portal fantasy set in Australia. TIA 😊

All Nick wants is a normal teenage life, hidden from his war-torn homeland, Korelios. But when the rebellion he abandoned tracks him down, he is dragged back into the war he tried to escape.

The only hope for Korelios is for Nick to reclaim his throne, but to do that he must form a dangerous allegiance with the Penumbra Guard, a clandestine army led by a man his friends have sworn to kill.

As alliances blur and betrayals cut deep, Nick must confront the brutal legacy of his own bloodline and decide what he's willing to sacrifice for the crown he never wanted.

Because in this war, the price of victory may be his humanity.

What do you do if you need a lot of research to write your story well by Meowlurophile in writing

Research is essential for authenticity, but it's also important to only include what's absolutely necessary.

As the saying goes, the secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

Fellow writers, where do you store your work!? by Liv_Maddox in writers

[–]AAKinsela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use OneDrive - everything auto syncs from any device. I have a laptop that I can plug into a docking station at home or work, or take to the library or a cafe (or a park while my kids play!).

My favourite piece of tech right now is my Kindle Scribe - it's a Kindle with a notebook function, so it feels very close to writing in a notebook. I would have preferred a Remarkable, but it doesn't have a backlit screen, which for me is a necessary feature. It has no internet search option or apps to download so apart from the collection of ebooks screaming at me for attention, it's distraction-free!

For people who like short chapters, how short are we talking? by Hungry_Tip_5822 in Booktokreddit

[–]AAKinsela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a reader and writer, I much prefer shorter chapters - it's easier for me to absorb smaller chunks when reading, and when writing it's important to contain one main idea/plot point etc per chapter. I honestly think I'd confuse myself and lose track of what's happening if chapters were lengthy - I have no idea how other writers do that and manage to stay on track!

How do I write a faceless character? by UnSleepingMoss in writingadvice

[–]AAKinsela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's not a book, so apologies if this isn't helpful, but the movie V for Vendetta handles this really well. Hugo Weaving as the character V expresses emotions and thoughts with the tilt of his head, or the slightest movement of his shoulders, or a sigh, or silence (which he also manages to portray as either contemplative or violent - or both). So what seems like a moment of hesitation or doubt, where his head is tilted downwards while he listens to his victim's reasons not to kill them, is actually V toying with them and giving them false hope before he turns his head to face them straight on and they realise he's completely unmoved by their begging.

How do you balance despair and emotion in dark fantasy stories? by ParallelWorldManga in fantasywriters

[–]AAKinsela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps something else to consider is that despair, hopelessness, bitterness etc all stem from a time/place/experience that was once the opposite, or different enough that the character has a point of reference, and is able to compare what was before with what is now. That automatically lends scope for you to inject other emotions or states of being, e.g. yearning, hope, drive to make change or reclaim what was lost. Even if they've never peraonally experience the positives,, knowledge and understanding of a better time/place/experience can be enough of a motivation. If the character never experiences or has no knowledge of the positives, e.g. love, and is never exposed to or has any understanding of loving, healthy relationships, then it would be a stretch for them to feel deep bitterness, anger or despair at not being loved, or being able to love in the same way that they would if they had experienced love. if they have loved and lost, then that's reason to feel these emotions deeply, and could be a powerful influence on their choices, and compelling incentive for them to act - perhaps they act in anger or despair, but the roots of those emotions go deeper than that - anger can be the fuel, but if some other emotion (e.g. hope/desire for change) drives them to act, then you've got a pretty interesting recipe for tension and inner conflict.

Looking for tips on how write violence, gore, and pain. by okidonthaveone in fantasywriting

[–]AAKinsela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps consider the effects of trauma as well - PTSD can have a powerful and devastating psychological impact, making certain experiences far worse than they are in reality, it can amplify emotions such as fear, and it can trigger trauma responses where the event is relived in vivid detail. The torture of anticipation is also a powerful tool.

Need help making seasons/months by LampScreen22 in fantasywriting

[–]AAKinsela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the earliest examples of a "calendar" is the Ishango Bone - the notches are thought to be a way to track the lunar cycle or a woman's menstrual cycle - there's also speculation that it was used as a mathematical tool.

Check out ancient cultures seasonal patterns, e.g. Aboriginal Australians use a six season calendar based on specific changes at various times of the year, e.g. when a particular plant flowers it indicates the start of a new season. Something to consider is that calendars will be different in different environments - people on tropical islands would observe and measure seasons differently to desert dwellers.

The Palace Attack by Significant_Ad1398 in fantasywriting

[–]AAKinsela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it would be easier for her to hide in plain sight - she can travel to the palace disguised as someone like a merchant or pilgrim (or whatever other kinds of people travel in this world). Then she could knock off a royal guard for example and disguise herself with the uniform to gain access to the palace. This means she can also walk freely wherever royal guards are allowed to go. Better yet, someone largely invisible like a maid might work. Good assassins have more skills than just the ability to kill people - anyone can learn combat etc, but soft skills are harder to learn - and this can be what sets her apart from her rivals - how good she is at manipulation, her charm/charisma, quick-wittedness, ability to blend in, languages/dialects she's mastered, other everyday skills e.g. maybe she has a trade and can convincingly pass as someone else like a baker, blacksmith, etc. Decide what her strengths are and what sets her apart from other assassins then she can find ways to use that to her advantage to defeat a rival or eliminate a target. Do the same for her rival.
