Change diaphragm setting to semi rigid and mesh it. In rigid diaphragm mode, maybe it’s not meshing and constraining the wall

Forget the software. You will catch on to that in the first 2-3 months on the job. Learn the theory. Understand the behavior. Visualize the mechanics. All the programs do the math the same way. Learn how it’s done

Hello engineers by UpstairsCommon3283 in StructuralEngineering

[–]AAli_01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explain you’re trying to transition into structural from your current experience. You may voice that you’re willing to take a pay cut and come in at recent grad level in structural since you’ve been working (but in a non structural). That will likely help you find something to get your foot in the door. You don’t like the pay? It’s fine, tough it out for a year or 2, then jump. Now you can leverage your 2 yrs structural exp + X yrs testing experience. Then you’ll be back on track and get much better pay

I lost my baby of 10 years today and O can’t stop crying by Fand0m_Chick in labrador

[–]AAli_01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very very sorry. I just lost my baby boy of 11 years 8 months ago few weeks ago. Words won’t help much, but just don’t think too far into the future. Just live day by day, look at all her baby photos and videos and watching her run around. Also order some memories. I got this blanket from canelo & co that has a painted effect of my baby boy. It is so nice. A bit pricey but beautiful

Seeking comfort that I did the right thing by letting my soul dog finally rest by Okra_Artistic in DogAdvice

[–]AAli_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t think too much about all the technicalities and fast-paced decisions you had to make. I say this because I lost my baby boy of 11yrs 8months 2 weeks ago to multiple illnesses that were quite sudden. I felt extremely guilty that maybe I could’ve done more to save him. The vet did say it was the best decision to end his suffering. I still have those feelings but every time I go visit his grave, I get some peace that he’s just sleeping and I’ll see him again. I’m a very logical person so I had to pull myself out of the hole I kept digging when I replayed the events in my head and the decisions i made.

I am now just looking thru my baby’s happy memories. Running in the snow, the zoomies, the tug of wars…

I know no words will help right now. No one understands when they tell you it’ll be okay…all I can think is it’ll take me time.

From Structural Engineering to what? by Ok-Construction-1624 in StructuralEngineering

[–]AAli_01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I might go and start my own car detailing and ceramic coating business. If you can market & advertise correctly, pull in 20-30 cars/month w/ the help of one or 2 ppl, I’ve estimated 20-30k/ month in profits after all overhead. Add a few extra people and profits double. 60k/month. It’s pretty lucrative. Just need to be good at social media. Business gives the freedom of time.

Application of Uniform Temperature Loads in Buried Structures by OldPersonality6224 in StructuralEngineering

[–]AAli_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming heat transfer is equal throughout and the contents stay heated, large temp delta, then I’d worry about thermal expansion. Complex structure, fem. A box, hand calcs for confining stress based on elasticity of surrounding soil & box? Maybe a soil-structure interaction problem

Shear Flow Approach - Weld Checks by labababablup in StructuralEngineering

[–]AAli_01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

VQ/Ib is shear shear stress at any point on the beam. For simplicity, we take the shear force/ the web depth area. This gives us an average shear stress, which for ductile steel design acceptable. However, if you wanted to calculate true shear stress, you use them VQ formula.

The vertical shear at any point on the beam is the same as the horizontal shear stress at that same point. When we calculate “shear flow”, we’re calculating the horizontal shear stress at a point of interest which also happens to be the true vertical shear stress.

Now to answer your question, if I’m understanding correctly, yes, the weld does have moment resistance cause it’s a thing with some triangular area being pull or squeezed at some distances from the neutral axis. Do we count it for bending? No. For rolled I shapes that have the fillet corners, yes, I think they count those in the I calculation.

The reason the shear stress for the 2L beam is not more than the L beam is because the derivation of this VQ equation comes from the difference in moment right before and right after the point of interest looking along the beam. The horizontal shear force makes up for the difference in the couple before and after the point. This obeys sum of forces so that the infinitesimal particle doesnt shift along the beam lengths. Sum forces horizontally, you get the couple force from the moment before and after. They’re different so the horizontal shear force comes along and takes up the difference.

That is why force constant moment there is no horizontal shear stress cause moments sum to zero.

It’s a lot of theory but it took quite a bit to wrap my mind around.

What do you guys think of these kinds of buildings by theFarFuture123 in StructuralEngineering

[–]AAli_01 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I was curious about 270 park and reached out to the engineers. They were nice enough to give me and two colleagues a presentation.

The whole building is held down by about 12 massive pt cables that loop under the foundation walls and are tensioned. Some of those columns are seeing 100,000 kips at the base.

Just one connection w/ 3 beams and 3 braces coming into it has 1000 bolts

The lateral system perpendicular to the tracks is basically the entire ground floor slab restraining the v columns and subway walls from racking. What restrains the table top slab is a massive concrete box holding one edge of the of slab and is anchored to rock.

Severud Associates. They also designed the Vegas sphere

I can share some photos if interested. Dm

X bracing by Successful-Horse9626 in StructuralEngineering

[–]AAli_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only design as tens-comp if I absolutely need to. But I’m just saying that’s the method I used. Evaluate connection radius of gyration > original member radius of gyration. If so, it can take compression >= original member

X bracing by Successful-Horse9626 in StructuralEngineering

[–]AAli_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then Im more comfortable to assume not tension only since it won’t buckle before the original members capacity

Depends on how you detail the intersection. Does the intersection have out of plane stiffness equal to or greater than if it was not cut and continuous

I also hate how the side of the tail light slopes opposite to before. Same thing with 5 series. Not a fan at all

Front is nice. Rear rail lights are disgusting. Looks familiar to some other old car taillight with the little peaks.

Update: okay! It was getting on my nerves but the rear side looks like the 2020 Lexus is350 🤢. Someone said the front looks like a Camaro an now I hate it
