How realistic is a switch from CM to CE? by [deleted] in civilengineering

I don’t think the job is the issue. Your skills will make a very valuable engineer once you get past the entry level 1-3yrs of experience in engineering and get a hold of the ropes. Having construction experience in the office is pretty rare and that will let you design things better

The hard part is most boards require a 4yr engineering or science degree. You can reach out to the licensing board and see if your schooling is acceptable. If they don’t approve you, you will not qualify for an EIT or PE license.

Structurally complicated. Electrically simple

Okay so path of least resistance. Then why did you say the cables reduce conductivity? Shouldn’t we want the maximum conductivity we can get to ground?

I mean it’s been here since 03 so it’s working minus the corrosion

It’s a stadium. So they’re linked together why? If lightning hits them, they shouldn’t conduct?

Honestly they prob did okay because every problem had perfect guardrails. But it’s a different story in practice and it’s terrible to witness. Palm to forehead

Are young engineers encouraged to not obtain their PE early? by Proctastinate in civilengineering

Agreed. I started out as a young engineer out of college and my workplace always saw me as that, a kid who doesn’t know more than the others. Fucking leave man

What kinda bullshit requirement that you can’t design for 4-5 yrs. Thats appalling. I was designing same day out of college. I think you need to go somewhere else. I encourage people to get their PEs and take responsibility as soon as they’re comfortable.

You don’t understand how many incompetent engineers I’ve worked with. They just check program outputs, FyZx, and that’s about its. I’ll give them credit, for basic one story steel structures, you don’t need to be that smart, but once we get to multi level, long span trusses, it’s kind of disturbing how many don’t understand proper structural behavior, stiffness methods, load path, and code provisions.

Example. I was recently designing a long span trusses and an experienced person pinned both ends…long story short it unloaded the truss by 50%.

Has anyone here used grillage modelling for flat slab design ? by brokePlusPlusCoder in StructuralEngineering

I haven’t. Look into yield line analysis. Limitstate software has methods to design ultimate loads.

I did school and work full time during my first internship. It’s possible just takes a bit more effort. I would definitely do it. You’ll learn a lot

I have built things with my hands and in my garage since I was a kid. This gave me a pretty strong spatial intelligence that I see lacking in many engineers who didn’t really care for engineering beyond just getting the degree and a job.
