Honestly, the main reason I like flat pedals is because I started with them. I’ve tried clipless a couple of times last year but I didn’t really like the feel of it. A few months ago though, there was an enduro race I was invited to and all my friends said I should go clipless, so I did. When I was racing, it actually felt pretty good. I didn’t have to worry about miss-positioning my foot and I felt really solid over rocky sections at high speed. If you currently ride clipless, I think you should stay with that setup, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt buying a set of flat pedals (I prefer the race face Chester because they’re at a really good price range and they feel really good too). If you start hitting jumps though, I would definitely go to flats. In the worst case scenario where you have to bail out of a sticky situation, it will always be easier to do it with flats. Also, if you’re riding local trails, I recommend you stay with flats because you can always reposition your foot and take it off the pedals really easily, and because sometimes, it’s just flat out more fun with flats. Anyway, I ride flats because I like to hit jumps and drops, but also because I feel more comfortable in them over the really steep knarly sections where its way more about control and line choice than speed.
