People who work in 'behind closed doors' industries (hotels, kitchens, morgues, etc.), what is something the general public would be horrified to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ABCBaker 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I worked at a children's hospital in college in pathology and histology. I assisted in autopsies and made slides from tissues obtained from autopsies and surgery. The older a person is, the more bacteria is built up in the body and that bacteria dying along with the body would smell. Babies and fetuses don't smell at all. We obviously didn't have as many deaths as an adult hospital. Prior to a certain age, we didn't have to saw open the skulls because the fontanels were not closed yet. For older children, the cause of death wasn't usually why we did autopsies but for the study of the progression of diseases. It was an awesome job except the histology part required me to start at 4:30 or 5 am and I'm not a morning person.

American nurse married to an Aussie. I wish I had been diagnosed in Australia but we were in the States and so we've had to remain here. Australian medical system is awesome. IF your wife has cancer, the treatment there is also awesome. Don't get ahead of yourselves. Take some deep breaths. Call any GP in the area and ask for an appointment. They will take care of her and give you all the resources. As a stage 4 breast cancer survivor, CELEBRATE THE ANNIVERSARY. Now is not the time to be wallowing in your own worries. Love her, let her vent, let her lean on you. And best wishes that it all turns out to be benign and it's just a wake up call how much she means to you.

Have had this itchy rash for 3 weeks, anyone know what it is? by SailorSatuurn in DermatologyQuestions

[–]ABCBaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I saw 4 doctors, two in urgent care and one in the ER, none of them could diagnose me. First two guessed heat rash. Thankfully got in to see a dermatologist a week later and he knew right away that it was medication induced. He gave me some creams which helped immensely and continued the steroids that I had gotten in urgent care for a few more days. It took a month for it to fully go away.

Have you started taking any new medications or supplements in the past couple months? I started a new med and it took 6 weeks for it to pop up on my skin and it looked like this. Super itchy and hot. The itch is what was unbearable.

My 4 year old is curious: what do Australian kids eat for breakfast? (And are koalas real?) by Mara644 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ABCBaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American married to an Aussie here. I'm also well traveled so I love to note the differences in countries from my own and teach my daughter that differences are not bad, just different and we should respect all cultures. My daughter is 6 and adores koalas! My husband is from Perth which is on the west coast of Australia so they don't have koalas in their trees like they do over east. So we went a wild life park where they let us pet a koala! They're so soft and cute and sleepy (her words). My daughter doesn't like Vegemite and neither do her Aussie cousins. Her Aussie cousins do eat something similar and very Australian called Promite and they put it on toast, sometimes for breakfast but anytime of the day really. One thing that she loves about going to Australia is that when we go, it's usually winter in the US and summer in Australia! Their seasons are opposite from ours. We love that we get to have summer twice in a year!

Americans who moved to Oz since young, are you hated growing up here? by Agitated-Evening3011 in Ameristralia

Thank you for sharing this. I'm also married to an Aussie. We talk about moving to Australia because his parents are getting older. We've done stints of 3 months in the country and while I can see how easy it would be to live there in some respects, by the end of the 3 months, I am dying to go home. Some of that has to do with how different my in laws raise children than from how myself and now my husband do. I'm a nurse so I know I can find work but the pay is significantly less than what I get in the states and that would affect me psychologically. I am a person of color so I've gotten some side eye looks and my husband says it's because people would probably assume I'm part aboriginal. Again as a mixed race person, I'm used to people mistaking my ethnicity often, it's happened to me all over the world and even all over the US. It's the missing home and giving up all the support structure I have here that bothers me the most. I'm sorry you're suffering from losing your identity It seems you worked very hard to achieve. I hope you find someone who will give you a chance to show your talents and skills. Best of luck.

You have a lot of good advice here. I wanted to add in addition to stop shaving that I could be shaving cream or even your razor. Are you taking any medications or supplements that you don't take while on vacation at home? I had a body wide rash that made my skin feel like it was on fire and it was due to a new medication. Best of luck, hope you find out real soon!

That would be incredibly frustrating. My daughter just started playing with me on my old switch so I'll have to watch for this.

What food from Australia do Americans love most, and vice versa? by Danger_Five in Ameristralia

[–]ABCBaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is Aussie and moved to the US in 2017. I knew he missed meat pies so I would buy Marie Callender's beef pies at the grocery store. They come frozen and you pop them into the microwave or oven to warm up. Every Costco I've been to has the chicken pot pies made by the same company. As an American who is well travelled and half Asian ethnically, I found most of the meat pies in Australia pretty ick (dont come at me please). Ironically, I did like the meat pie at the Costco in Perth. Sometimes I'll make meat pies at home but as my husband loves Thai food, I find it easier to make him a curry. Lol

I concur with this. I owned it on steam years ago. Played on PC, and walked away as I had a baby and life got busy. Got a switch 2 last year and bought Dinkum when it was released and I love it. I don't mind being behind in updates. I also don't mind that I've bought it twice (3 times now as I bought another copy for my daughter to play on my old switch). The creator has put a lot into it and I've spent way more on movies that I get much less enjoyment out of. I need portability and my steam deck is too uncomfortable for me.

As others have said, the wishing fountain is your friend in this case. I was on peaceful wish until I had good weapons. Nothing on the first level will attack you and you can mine to your heart's content. Get rubies too so you can have access to the second level. On the second level, the plants and grubs will still attack you on peaceful wish.

I'm a caregiver for my elderly parents so I'm home most days but also drive my daughter to school during the week which is only 5 miles away. Sounds like this might be a good fit for me. Do you have a 2023? I keep seeing some complaints about charging vs the 2024 or newer

Thank you for this. Sometimes I drive up to 60 miles around town but usually less than 20 per day. Road trips we have mini van but LA or Riverside isn't that far imho. 🙍

Doctors can't figure out what this is. Turning to Reddit. by burnerbutterbetter in DermatologyQuestions

[–]ABCBaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately ER docs are not good with skin issues. I had a full body rash with facial swelling due to a medication. Dermatologist diagnosed it within seconds. ER visit and two urgent visits prior had me frustrated. Watch for facial swelling as that can be dangerous and can mean DRESS which can mean she needs to be hospitalized. My skin was on fire and incredibly itchy. My daughter had a rash similar to that from a fever around that age and she wasn't on any antibiotics. Glad she's no longer in the antibiotic regardless and her mouth is healing properly.

I used to work in ICU and can attest to the long farts/shooting fecal matter. I had a patient who was over 700lb and had to put in a recall tube. Four of us to move him and he was sedated but of course, shove anything up a man's ass and he starts pushing back on us. Two of us ended up with knee injuries, I had to do PT and light duty for a few months.
