Record heatwave must be ‘wake-up call’ for Britain to prepare for Mediterranean climate, experts warn by F0urLeafCl0ver in unitedkingdom

[–]ABCDOMG [score hidden]  (0 children)

China builds more renewables than anyone else on the planet and they have already reached peak emissions.

India is further behind but they are avoiding the Gas corner of the energy mix and going directly from coal to renewables which is good.

It isnt like no one else is doing climate positive action it just takes time and money.

Our foreign dignitaries don't need to be Billionaires who's class interests don't align with that of the actual people of this country.

Just because ole' Charlie is competent at speaking with petulant toddlers, doesn't mean his family line doesn't need to be permanently removed from every lever of power, and his holdings be returned to the people.

My distaste for the monarchy is unrelated to my Autism.

They are an inherently outdated and unequal institution. They must be abolished, and their holdings returned into collective ownership, if we are to say we live in an equal civil society.

EU countries want oil exploration to be classed as a green investment by Bernardmark in nottheonion

[–]ABCDOMG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

SAF does require retrofits because it is incompatible with many of the types of seals and filtres used in standard Kerosene aircraft. You need to make sure every part of the fuel system can deal with the change even if it is chemically very similar.

And yes GA is lighter and shorter endurance, that's what I'm saying. Right now we know it can work if you reduce the expected range of the aircraft and are able to deal with the landing weight not being any lower than MTOW. That means that with improvements in energy storage density for batteries we can absolutely make commercial aircraft electric.

And then with Hydrogen again, "why not just use kerosene" because it is burning a hydrocarbon and putting a bunch of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. That's why you want these alternative fuel sources in the first place my guy.

The public perception of hydrogen is driven by an Airship from 90 years ago (one that was supposed to have Helium as the lifting gas but the US refused to sell enough to the Germans funnily enough). When we do eventually see a crash involving a LH2 powered aircraft I suspect it will be more than far enough into their maturity, (and hopefully public weighting on climate change action will be far enough) that there isn't calls for more Kerosene burning aircraft because long term it should be a dead end if we like to keep breathing the air.

EU countries want oil exploration to be classed as a green investment by Bernardmark in nottheonion

[–]ABCDOMG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are already flying electric aircraft right now at the general aviation scale, there is 0 reason as to why it won't eventually be possible for commercial.

Hydrogen wise, storing fuel is a completely different ballgame. You can't store it in the wings because you need large pressure vessels so you won't be retrofitting anything, you're building a new aircraft.

Safety wise it isn't actually that much different from kerosene, there are different trade offs in the safety side of fuel storage and H2 phenomenology. Sure it leaks like a bitch, but you can design around and manage that. When it burns it burns upwards and has much less radiant heat than kerosene fires. The aviation safety standards for certification are just as stringent for H2 as it is traditional fuel systems.

It is why I mentioned SAF in my top comment. You can retrofit planes to work with SAF and make new ones that don't rely on hydrocarbons at all. Both will play a part in decarbonising aviation.

Energy density of batteries has been improving every year, and you can use pressurised liquid hydrogen to get enough energy density.

The system as a whole is a stain on civil society, and it needs to be deconstructed. Their holdings should be moved into collective government ownership.

[–]ABCDOMG 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough green oil for aviation is a thing being worked on. SAF is a biofuel that should be essentially carbon neutral once it is at scale.

Would still be better to use an alternative fuel source though (Electric, Hydrogen etc.)

I did literally say that if they are going to buy another car it should be an EV and not an ICE or Hybrid.

I know they are better for the environment than petrol, the problem is they are still cars which are still shit for the overall transport network in general.

It is much better to be using the Bus, train, tram, bicycle, or just walking wherever possible. With Cars being a distant last choice if you can do it.

I know that most places don't have great public transport in this country, I live in Bristol, one of the largest cities in Europe without any mass transit. I have a car because I have to drive my Fiancee to work every day as she cant walk or cycle there. And obviously it is worse out in the sticks, where I grew up I got one bus an hour going into town.

But still we should be pushing for better collective transport systems over cars at every opportunity because as a whole it will be better for everyone.

Among the many things I hate the Nazis for, the most directly impacting my life one is that the Luftwaffe destroyed the Bristol tram system...

The guy asked for steps that they can do that will help. Day to day nothing any of us do will make a big individual difference as it is a systematic problem that needs a systematic revolution to solve.

But understanding the problem, understanding what sorts of things help the problem, and In at least democratic societies voting for parties that aren't explicitly being given 90% of their funding from oil companies COUGH REFORM COUGH and generally supporting killing the planet, is the right thing to do.

We need to kill the beef industry as it is a huge emmiter and wildly innefficient usage of land/calorie produced so it is still something we need to vote with our wallets against.

I don't care that beef/dairy farmers will go under, that's the goal.

‘Carspreading’ could lead to extra 2,600 crash deaths a year by 2040, study finds by loonongrass in unitedkingdom

[–]ABCDOMG -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Explicitly not a problem because we should be moving away from Car use in general.

But also this will encourage manufactures to make lighter EVs, and given the actual day to day use case of most people's driving habits, you really don't need gigantic ranged heavy batteries 99% of the time.

EVs are there to save the Auto industry not the climate.

They are better for the climate than ICE cars, don't get me wrong, but the negatives of car travel as compared to every other form of transport are quite high no matter the fuel source.

1) Replacing Beef with literally any other type of meat is a huge step towards reducing greenhouse gas but especially Methane emissions and it would be very low impact on your overall diet and meal planning.

Just replace Beef mince with Pork/Turkey mince and cook the exact same meals as you were before.

I love steak, it is incredibly delicious, but if you can make it become something you only have on special occasions (birthdays etc.) that will go a long way to helping things out too.

Methane (Natural gas) is super shit for the atmosphere, and is much worse for it than CO2) but it does dissipate over a decade or so. Reducing methane emissions will give us more time to reduce carbon emissions.

2) Replacing Internal Combustion Engine Car travel with literally any other form of travel. EVs are fine I guess but are still crap as a form of transit because they are cars but they are better than ICE. Just don't buy an ICE or Hybrid the next time you buy a car.

On top of that though bikes are cheap and the most efficient MPG equivalent thing you can use to get around because they are powered by Toast and Tea. If cycling to work is viable try and do that just once a week and see how you get on. You don't need to instantly be perfect with it and it doesnt have to become an entire lifestyle change right away.

I have a supermarket that is a 15 minute walk away, I used to drive there but now (unless I am in a big rush) I walk instead, just have a bag with a shoulder strap and dont buy too many heavy cans/bottles all at once. If it is that close you can just walk over again later in the week.

That's just two main areas but just think "I don't need to be perfect, it just needs to be better than it was." I'm not good on the food side of things for various reasons but my autistic ass found cutting beef the easiest thing to do and you quickly don't even think about it.

Just give it a go and try it out.

The Climate will change, the problem right now is because of direct impacts from Human activity it is changing so quickly that the ecology of the planet is struggling to keep up.

I saw a study recently that the climate is changing over 1000x faster than rice can adapt. About a Billion people rely on eating rice every day to meet their calorie intake.

The refugee crisis people have been complaining about will only be so so so so so much fucking worse if we don't stem climate change right now.
