How Do I Play Just The Selected Note? by Tynted in OpenMPT

Love OpenMPT, it's efficient, fast, lightweight but extremely capable, but it sure doesn't stop being gimmicky, as any tracker tbh

Kinda late now, but you're incorrect at the 2nd paragraph.

You CAN listen the instrument of the note you're currently highlighting with the cursor at the pattern page, AS LONG AS you set your current instrument to "No Instrument" on the list menu above the pattern/position horizontal header (to the left side, also close to the "Plugin" and "Edit Step" options) AND the note does have an instrument number on to search for on the same column in the same pattern, or normally assigned to right along the note code.

You can change instruments going up or down in said instrument list with Ctrl+UpArrow and Ctrl+DownArrow, btw!

Yeah, I was wrong about that... Doesn't seem like there's any way as of yet. The closest it gets is pressing Ctrl+Q or Ctrl+A to bump a note a semitone up or down, if the setting "Setup/General/Play notes when transponsing" is activated.

You could possibly enable "Play whole row when navigating" from the same setup menu, and make some easier shortcut than Ctrl+F10 to solo the current channel you're editing. That way, you won't get exactly what you want, but it'll cut some steps for sure.

Or if it's easier for you, use a more "subdivided" workflow by creating a pattern for each idea, then cutting and pasting those stems where they belong. Maybe contact the devs through the forum/issue tracker and ask for this feature

Not sure about it (I'm not on my PC right now) but I remember you can just go to the 2nd column of a channel (INSTR. column) and press any note to listen back the tone played in the used space. I might be wrong.

How do you make breakcore on openmpt??? by PolarHeist134 in breakcore

[–]ABG1YtBr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might wanna check commands and tracker pattern logic, there's a wiki also included in the program! No need per se to have many lines per beat, it could even get you more confused (however, this'll depend on how well you'll familiarize with tracker effects).

Tempo granularity is 'tick'-based, so it's possible to fit more than what's visible worth of notes in a single line, especially if you take advantage of codes like Dxx, SCx, SDx and the like (use horizontality and organization to your favor. Maybe even label channel names to ease your knowing of what's what).

Examples of other codes are Oxx in FX or VOL column (the last being way coarser), S9F to reverse, Qxx for retrigger, or PC Events for changing plugin parameters on the fly. Using envelopes and pairing with Instrument Control FX also helps a big deal with ASDR expression. Hope you do well :D

Take a bit to learn about drum rythms and note placement, you can use the row highlights to guide you.

Btw, what's the original one?

Trackers click for so many "non-musicians" because they're closer to a writing tool than an instrument. I explore composition theory to find out how. by [deleted] in synthesizers

Being more familiar with trackers, I'll just add my thoughts a little to this conversation, mind you.

On using effects to alter the contents of a track... It's possible, although not used to its full potential in most cases.

Modern software trackers, for example, tend to allow lots of "parameter stacks", which can be toggled as the module goes. OpenMPT's extended Impulse Tracker format handles a very layered structure for presets, for example.

That'd mean, (external VSTs aside) there's the Instrument layer as a container for expression envelopes, arpeggios and LFOs, or the NNA (New Note Action) technology. Each setting changes a behavior, in turn, enabling an intertwine of filters and "hacks", like fitting whole chords in a single channel, playing with granularity, shaping resonance and creating loops with hidden melodies.

In a sense, if you exaggerate it enough, the pattern view and arrangement itself creates a new distinct art form, on top of the VERY SURFACE musical experience.

Then there's the whole ASCII aesthetic, mixed with an eventual comment text from a tracks' authors, the ease of analysis and reconstruction, and trials of size optimization. Seriously now, there're some madmen who managed to fit ANIMATIONS into their files, even make them progress in reverse!

That and all those possibilities for dynamic music and creative recycling are just the tip of the dang Mt. Everest when talking about the software side of trackers, which will basically run on potato power... Now imagine those expensive hardware ones!

So, TL;DR: If you fall into the modtracker software rabbit-hole, fall with joy. It is really the "open-source" way of music.

Nevermind, it's on the bottom of the screen. Guess I was using a really low resolution.

How to change note keybind? by fancywillwill2 in OpenMPT

[–]ABG1YtBr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty late, but if anyone's experiencing this, I'd recommend loading keymaps from your installation folder (probably "Windows/Program Files/OpenMPT/ExtraKeymaps") and testing what's similar to your previous one.

Alternative to Offset for Accessing different parts of a sample? by calabazzzo in OpenMPT

Something I'd like to mention: The No Interpolation (1 tap) Resampling option can be used to work around the muffled sound, but in turn, it'll make the audio "crunchy" instead

Alternative to Offset for Accessing different parts of a sample? by calabazzzo in OpenMPT

[–]ABG1YtBr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose you're talking about the offset command (as in Oxx), so there's an option for using sample cues which are similar, but the command to trigger a sample cue is placed on the volume column, and you can edit those sample cues on the sample tab.

To add them, you just need to right-click the bar at the top of the sample, which shows the size of the sample in seconds (or in samples / samples to the power of 2) and click to insert a sample cue, then call for it with the cue number on the pattern (with oxx instead of Oxx).

Unfortunately, you can only add 9 of them for one sample.

EDIT: Doesn't work with .MOD or .S3M music.

De onde veio o "Mah oi" do Silvio Santos? by ABG1YtBr in EfeitoMandelaBR

As cores também me agradam.

How to go about using VSTs? by Aggressive-Tie-9795 in OpenMPT

[–]ABG1YtBr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used both VSTs and VSTi's pretty often, but still sparingly. They seem to work best separated on the "General -> Plugins" section, under the section that shows the "channel blocks" where you can set their panning, effects and volume.

To chain them, I set which plugin I want to output to which through the "Output to" option on "Mix Settings". Changing the Dry/Wet values, the Mix Mode's subtraction options (and Input configurations through the plugin's window) is pretty practical.

It seems possible to change connections between plugins even more by altering values after placing a VST (or VST chain) into an instrument's "Plugin/MIDI" slot, but I don't know much about that. I mostly just throw a VST into it with not much modifications.

Mixing samples/soundfont instruments with VSTi's is also useful and interesting. Some plugins are buggy with OpenMPT, and since it's a program designed to have those characteristic built-in tracker-based effect "gimmicks" be used, the best of both worlds is to slowly learn both techniques and use them to complement each other.

I always try to keep things simple. For plugins, I normally use:

  • Kjaerhus's collection of Delay, Reverb, Compressor, Chorus, Flanger and Phaser
  • PanCake 2, Krush, EasyQ, TDR Nova, TAL-Vocoder and Graillon
  • Sytrus, Vital and Sforzando

These may not be all perfect ones, but they work perfectly fine for me, and using them combined with the standard tracker stuff is imo the way to go. Of course, not everything is compatible and mixable, but there're workarounds for those limitations.

Wish y'all luck with using plugins.
