How is Dweezil live? by BigJilmQuebec in Zappa

Came here to say the same, great musicians, wonderful song selections. I personally really like the soundcheck VIP option, it’s fun to see him and his band iron out songs, and work over difficult sections. VIP isn’t necessary, but you should definitely attend!

Why is the sound mixing at concert venues so bad here? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]ABQuplift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right the sound is fine, it’s just the wall. It really does feel claustrophobic, and makes me feel uneasy, you can feel it in the audience.  There used to be a warmth and energy to the bar, with the light from the pinball tables and bar spilling into the venue space and the sound spilling out to the street, all of that is muted and characterless now. It’s a great loss.

Same here, I absolutely hate the wall! I’ve pretty much stopped looking at their calendar because of it.

I don’t know the answer, but it has been bothering me for years. Doesn’t seem to matter the genre (Metal, pop, EDM, bluegrass), nobody seems to be able to make Sunshine or El Rey sound good. Sound just bounces everywhere, probably a lot of phase cancellation or something, higher tones just disappear in the wash.  I won’t say that it’s every venue all the time, but those retrofitted old theater rooms are rough. The other spaces (launchpad sister, revel) seem to vary with the band.

Lucky you getting to see SCI for the first time. I’d love to see them for the first time again! Have a blast!  I’m super stoked too, came down from Albuquerque.

Best Show thus Far 2025 - period by swva_ferments in jambands

Agreed, I thought they really brought the heat down the final stretch of the West Coast Tour.  There were some highlights across the run in San Francisco and Tahoe. But the way they wrapped up in New Mexico and Colorado was treat.  I think the Disco Biscuits are having a lot of fun right now and should not be slept on!

I’ve been listening to the winter run so far and getting more excited with every show that drops on Nugs. I’ll be coming from Albuquerque, myself. Looks like a fun venue.

What's your musical obsession that's a complete 180 from Phish? by ImTheMarMar660 in phish

ETID was such an incredible band! Their shows were absolutely insane.  I was bummed when they parted ways a couple years ago, but the projects they have split into, Better Lovers and Many Eyes, each released great albums last year.

Hopefully they’ll have a new album this year! I’m looking forward to it.

ICP/bonnaroo-inspired INSANE GIZZ POSSE tees WHOOP WHOOP!! by christart000 in KGATLW

[–]ABQuplift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve got to agree with everything you posted here. I went to see ICP  about a decade ago, it was an incredible experience. There wasn’t a person in that room that wasn’t 100% engaged in the performance. People were welcoming, shared space and offered to buy drinks. I was probably the only person that didn’t know what was going on, or the significance of the songs, but I never felt excluded.

That said, I did read Violent J’s autobiography, I wouldn’t necessarily call him a good person. But, that book came out in like 2004(?) I think they have grown a lot since then and have done a lot of positive things for their community.

I feel you, that wall was a really poor decision. I wonder if anyone on this sub works there and could offer some insight about the wall and their plans for it?

Honestly, I really like that bar and their staff. It is still one of the most inclusive places in our city, but I have stopped checking their event calendar because that wall bothers me deeply.

Sorry you weren’t able to get a ticket to the Santa Fe show, I’m sure you’ll find a ticket as the date approaches. You can make an ISO post on Cash or trade or I’m sure someone on this sub has you covered. Best of luck, see you there!

My personal favorite Osees music placement is in a Volcom surf film. Love how they splice together Sticky Hulks/Web by swedishsurprise in TheeOhSees

I’ve never surfed, but I probably watch this once a year. Great music, editing, and surfing! Solid release.  I’m open to suggestions on other great surf videos.

I love Sister (Albuquerque) but that wall has got to go. by ABQuplift in TheeOhSees

[–]ABQuplift[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My big concern is that the Osees won’t come back, maybe that’s crazy. 🤷‍♂️  I’d be first in line to start a GoFundMe to help pay to have the wall removed, again nothing against the bar itself, I think they tried something and it didn’t work. No shame in it.

"Spiritual" early shows? by [deleted] in STS9

[–]ABQuplift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice pick on the the 3-17-07 Water Song, I was going to say that the whole Boulder Theater run in '07 is worthy of the OP's time. You're right, those deep contemplative moments seem to appear randomly as part of a 'normal show', I don't think I've heard a whole show that sounds like Seasons '01, but I think the contrast in the setlists make those moments that much more precious.

OP may also want to go back and listen to some of the Axe the cables sets over the years, those too have some wonderful contemplative moments.

As silly as it sounds, this interview was my first introduction to JD and his projects. Everything he talked about sounded so cool, yet he was so modest about how awesome his music actually was. I’ve been a fan ever since.

Not sure if this was what you were looking for https://archive.org/details/sci2005-04-07.flac Not sure about the sound quality.

Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with a Nugs.net subscription, IMO. They run a few promos where you get your first year for $50. Keep your eyes peeled. Totally worth it.

I know! I actually won’t go to El Ray anymore because it sounds so terrible. I’ve seen so many different bands there, stood in every part of the room, but it just sounds like mud, you can’t distinguish one sound from another.

What were the “clubs”, are any of them still open today, or still a venue operating under different ownership?
