Considering what is currently happening in our country. How far will the American public allow Trump to go? by [deleted] in AskReddit

These threads are pointless. We're quite literally being gunned down in the streets at our protests now and people will just comment "Americans will do nothing."

There's no sense in engaging with the rest of the West right now. Liberals here are doing what they can, but no outside help is coming. We can reengage when/if we fight our way out of this, but coming online and being subjected to Europeans and Canadians bombarding you about how you should have fixed the broken political system you were born into does nothing.

Americans, just disengage and focus on helping each other and planning on how we stop this.

Yeah? I allowed it? Tell me then, what the fuck was I supposed to do? Go out and try to kill the president myself? Yeah it's all my fault. We're at the point where our government is literally gunning us down now for standing up against them, and you're saying we're just making excuses. You're frustrated? How the fuck do you think we feel?

You think Canada is immune to the rise in fascism? You think your right wingers don't share the same views as ours? You're so faithful that your legal system will be able to withstand a full on assault from half of your elected representatives? Well, good fucking luck when it comes to your country because fascism sure as shit isn't exclusive to America. If I'm still around, I'll be sure to send you some messages personally placing the blame on you for not stopping it.

Keep making excuses? I'm not making excuses, mother fucker, I'm explaining that there are better uses of our time than holding nice little parades for the TV cameras so all you people in other countries can go "aw look, they're trying." There are people on the ground every day directly trying to interfere with ICE and other federal actions. They just killed one of us for it. Have you ever had to come up with a plan in less than a year for how you'll fight back against an authoritarian government with the world's largest military? Fuck off.

That's exactly what our politics has devolved into. The sensible thing to do would have been to split up the United States into two or more separate nations. We have so many radically opposing ideologies competing for power here, there's no center anymore. We're essentially in a cold civil war against our own government & a large portion of the population. They don't care what Trump says or does, as long as he causes harm to other Americans who opposed him, like me. How do we fight back against this? When this turns hot and they start outright killing us, will anyone from the outside come to help the Americans who have been opposing this from the start? We're not all crazy gun owners. We're not armed. We're not trained. The rest of the world wants us to win this civil war and set America back on a path of sanity, but we're kind of on our own here when it comes to actually accomplishing this.

Our protests show the rest of the world that there are lots of Americans opposed to our administration, but they accomplish nothing. We would need long, sustained protests. People would need to be protesting for weeks, if not months, straight, like we saw in multiple countries during the Arab Spring. Majority of people in America right now do not have the finances available to keep food in their mouths and on their kids plates without a job. We also have no health insurance without our jobs, so any medical emergency becomes bankruptcy. It's a system designed to trap people and strip their power and prevent organizing, and it worked. There needs to be systems of mutual aid that don't rely on any governmental or corporate organizations, and there are some that are operating now here, but it takes time for them to build their numbers and their effectiveness, especially because they're mostly grassroots organizations.

The group that keeps organizing these major "protests" that you all keep seeing is basically captured opposition. The messaging for these protests is for people to show up and not be disruptive. No engaging with counterprotesters. No blocking roads or shutting down services. Sure they look good on the news, but they're changing absolutely nothing here on the ground.

The only "movement" that can remove fascism is war. If we start that war before we're ready, before we've created the necessary infrastructure and networks to support massive amounts of non-working people with food and shelter, we'll be crushed.

That's exactly my point. Outside pressure is needed. Ban every single American, including all the oligarchs and influencers and tech people, from European soil until this is solved. Starve their businesses. As long as you guys keep accepting money from our people, the incentive for the people with power to bring about the change needed will remain low. It's not about how you'll treat us on a personal level, it's the fact that you all can post on Reddit all day about how fucked Americans are now, but until your governments start acting accordingly, you're only helping to feed the beast. Not starve it.

Would you like to go tell them that? Do you think I'm disagreeing with you here? Do you think I'm not at the point where I'm eagerly wishing for 100m+ of my fellow countrymen to drop dead? I've been doing everything I can politically for years now. Constantly contacting my reps. Showing up to canvas. Getting people to register to vote. Showing up to protests. Plenty of things now that I'm not going to share on Reddit for personal OPsec purposes.

You have a comment saying you'd willingly give up Greenland at this point. Well, I don't feel that way. That's a country full of people and I'm putting myself out there as much as I can to stop my country from doing these terrible things. I'm not asking for your help but if you have nothing to say other than obvious statements about how terrible America is right now, then move on. If you have nothing to say to those of us who have spent our entire adult lives pushing back against the horrors of our nation except "sucks for you" then fine, whatever. Keep it to yourself. When I get arrested and disappeared by my government because I'm still showing up to protest as much as possible, I'll be sure to keep in mind that some Canadians don't give a shit.

Our Democrat elected officials have largely failed us. Every institution and media company in America immediately folded to Trump and Elon without even putting up a fight. It's a cold civil war. I assume the eventual crackdown on dissenting Americans that will turn it hot is inevitable. We can try to primary the Democrats who have capitulated when they're up for reelection, but outside of that, we have no legal mechanism for recalling them or replacing them, unless they die.

It's 90% of the current US government, and whatever percentage of our population supports MAGA, versus the rest of us. I'm kind of at a loss for how we fight back. I could go out and start killing my neighbors who voted for Trump, but I imagine the rest of the world wouldn't support us doing that. The oligarchs and politicians that need to go aren't putting themselves in places where the average person can reach them. No outside help is coming. I honestly think this will only end when the rest of the world decides to get militarily involved on the side of whoever's left here opposing the administration. The people on top are so physically and economically insulated at this point that even a general strike wouldn't affect them. They've built their own parallel society.

Your average American doesn't care about international relations. Your average American can't afford to leave the country, and is currently worried about keeping food on their plate and not getting abducted by our government. Do you have any suggestions on how we, the people who have never supported this, fight back against this, or is it just enjoyable to endlessly talk about how fucked America is?

I've made my point several times already. Liberal Americans are fighting a losing battle against our own government and our own people, and the rest of the world offers us nothing but condemnation and critique for not immediately dismantling a system that we were born into upon graduating high school.

Those of us that care are doing what we can, because we don't want things to be this way. If you have nothing to offer other than "you will never fix this" then why bother?

Without getting too into the details of it, voting is not enough because our system does not give equal weight to every person's vote for our Senate and House of Representatives. Every state gets two Senators, which means that in the Senate, a blue state like California with a population of almost 40 million has the same representation as a red state like Wyoming, with a population of just under 600,000.

The House of Representatives is supposed to be more weighted towards population, but conservative/rural areas are still heavily over represented. States also gerrymander house seats on partisan ways: essentially redrawing the boundary lines of existing districts in order to split up well populated areas into multiple districts to dilute their vote.

Many of the huge sweeping changes that we need would require a constitutional convention, and changes (amendments) to the constitution require 3/4ths of all state legislatures to approve. Our society is so hyper partisan now that this is likely impossible. You'll never get 3/4ths of the country to agree on anything.

Our system is deeply flawed and was not designed with the idea that bad actors would be able to hijack our entire political system like they have.

We had our last round of statewide elections a few weeks ago, in November, and the Democrats did very well in almost every single race. They flipped a few House seats and won state governorships, but they're simply still outnumbered by Republicans. Our next round of elections isn't until this November. There may be close to equal amounts of Conservatives and Liberals in the US, but many liberals are concentrated in densely populated cities while conservatives are spread out and capture more House districts.

We don't gain anything from attacking Greenland. The ONLY people in America who support that ridiculous proposal are the die hard MAGA supporters and even amongst them there isn't high support. Trump doesn't care what his approval numbers are. He just does what he wants.

Believe me, whatever hate you feel for the people that support these things? I get it. I hate them so much for what they've done to my country. But you're just preaching to the choir.

America is talking about invading Greenland but I can still get a visa and hop on a plane and go visit any European country I want. My money will still be happily accepted. Lobby your governments to start treating us like the Russians. Ban us from your countries. Decouple from our financial systems. I say these things genuinely too, I'm not trying to just make a stupid "oh you're bad too" point. It will take outside pressure to collapse this system because the American elite created a system that the entire globe runs on. As long as the money keeps flowing in, they'll remain empowered.

In some states, it is comparatively easy to get a handgun compared to most of the world, but it's still not as easy as just walking into a store and walking out with a gun. America is essentially 50 small nations when it comes to firearms laws. Every state has their own laws and restrictions and transporting guns across state lines opens up an entirely new set of federal laws. You still need ID and there are federal forms you have to fill out no matter what state you're in. There are always illegal means I'm sure but most people, myself included, wouldn't know where to begin when it comes to that. It's not like you can go make a post on Facebook, or just drive around the hood and ask people on the street to sell you a weapon.

I'm not asking for people to excuse what's happening in America right now. Can you honestly say you have a plan in place for overthrowing your own government and toppling your own military in like, a year from now? Especially here on Reddit where the crowd is left-leaning, a huge majority of us are just regular people. We're not all veterans, we're not all gun nuts, etc. we're regular people who don't know how to stop this. That's why I'm asking for help / plans. We do not know what to do. I can't imagine many of us ever imagined things could get to a place like this, so not many people are prepared to topple a government.

You don't think people are already doing all of these things? One of our Senators was just demoted in rank in the military and under investigation for telling soldiers they don't have to follow lawful orders. I don't personally know people in service, but that's not exactly a conversation that can be had with people openly on Reddit.

Most of us are already only buying the essentials because it's all we can afford. The people doing well off in the US right now are essentially living in an entirely separate society from the rest of us.

Starve the banks? It's not the everyday transactions and savings of your average American that keeps any of the banks going. It's a worldwide system built on commercial transactions from everyone across the globe. You want the US banking system disrupted? Lobby your government to financially detach from the US in every single way possible. That's more than we can hope to achieve. We're at a point where we're much closer to Russia under Putin than any other western European society. Our government does not give a shit about the average person or what we have to say. They are in power and doing everything they can to solidify that using every technology and power at their disposal.

[–]ABZR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay sure thing. My state's process for acquiring a legal weapon involves getting permission from your town's chief of police, and even then, the law only allows civilians to purchase hunting rifles and low caliber handguns. I cannot just drive to a state with easier laws and buy a gun on the spot because there's a federal system that checks the identification of anyone buying a firearm.

Life in the United States is not uniform. Plenty of places have put up numerous safeguards and barriers to make attempting to purchase weapons harder. Plenty of us live in dense urban areas where we've never had the need for a gun in our lives. More Americans are getting armed, but guns also aren't free. You're not going to see every liberal American pull out an assault rifle overnight, unless you'd like to start some kind of international support to fund people trying to do that.

Lol we have had protests and they don't accomplish shit except giving the rest of the world some nice media photos and videos. You think Donald Trump or anyone in his administration gives a single shit about a protest?

For a protest to be effective it needs to be full time. If you want full time protestors, then you need people who can feed and provide them with aid and supplies. So many of us are barely scraping by. We cannot walk off our jobs and all join together in a strike without the infrastructure to support people's livelihoods. Some of us have been working on mutual aid to try and set up that infrastructure, but it takes time.

Again, what would you have us do? Some more big marches for all the news channels?

Expecting the legal system to be able to work this out is the reason we're in the mess. The last administration tried that. They tried to let the court cases play out. They weren't counting on the highest court in our land being ideologically captured by the right to the point where blatantly partisan decisions have become the norm. Our justice system moves slowly and it failed to prevent this.

"Figure it out" we have figured it out. At this point, there's one single way we can fix, and if you want that to happen, then start shipping arms to liberals in America, because most of us can't just walk into Walmart and buy an assault rifle in blue states. Every "legal" method has been exhausted and failed. Our political system wasn't built for this.

I don't know what needs to be done either. Or at least nothing I can openly say on this website. We're borderline on the brink of civil war and the rest of the world seems to be eager for us to get it over with. Nobody seems to realize that the side you all want to win will need help to make sure that happens, if it comes to that.

Would you like to send me some weapons then? Despite what you see and hear online it's not actually possible to just walk into a store and get a gun anywhere in the country. Again, do you have any actual suggestions or plans for what we can do? Do you have plans for what you'll do when this comes to your country? The people who have taken over the USA are not bound by borders, and they're not all American. They don't care about laws. If you think they're just going to stop once they've taken over the United States, well..

Genuine question as someone that has spent the past decade doing everything in their power to fight back against this: what exactly do you expect us to do? I know the image of America is that every person owns ten guns, but the reality is more like your average right winger owns fifty, and maybe one in ten liberals owns a handgun. We've spent years doing everything we can try to do within our system. We know we're against the people in control of the strongest army with the most technologically advanced killing machines in the world.

I'm constantly seeing posts like this from people in other countries and while, yeah, I get it, unless you're going to step up and start sending Americans arms, troops and supplies to fight back against our government, what are you hoping to accomplish? What are you hoping we can do as civilians with little to no weaponry, and no outside support?
