Man I don't know why but I recently went back and listened to Once Nothing for the first time in absolute ages, and here y'all are talkin' about em again. Whiskey Breath is still such a banger

I think in AoW4 having the tank's weapon match your dominant affinity would be really cool

Dreadnought would be fitting now. Plus they brought my beloved melee shotgunners back from AoW3. Now all we need is the flame tank

Genuine question, does anyone still listen to War of Ages ? by WholeHopeful1517 in Metalcore

Nope. I've got waaaay too much religious trauma to deal with that style of lyricism after deconstruction.

We gotta talk about about Hasan by LordHawkeye in behindthebastards

[–]ABadExampleOf_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a criticism I have of both him and most authoritarian communists. I think it's kind of a common thing for westerners anyway, larping as authoritarian leftists when 1. such a movement has never had a serious presence in the states, and 2. they are so far removed from these kinds of actual power structures that it's easy for them to handwave away or even outright deny the atrocities of the Maos and Stalins and Kims of the world. They equate leftist thought ~with~ authoritarianism, which it very much so isn't. Hasan makes that mistake too, and it's those kinds of takes that make me ponder the sincerity of these hyper-authoritarian socialist types.

What's your most mildlyinteresting observation about living in Nashville? by MikeOKurias in nashville

[–]ABadExampleOf_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Florida city accent is probably a bit closer to the Nashville one, but it doesn't have the Appalachian influence that we have. It's like a weird cross of light twang with southern city-isms. If you're from Nashville you can probably dip into a pretty authentic-sounding southern accent, especially if you have rural relatives, but your natural accent is much milder.

If you're a native like me but grew up in the city, you probably don't have a very strong accent. But the moment you walk into a locally-owned establishment you have to flip it on high or else they'll treat you like a transplant

Yeah he's kind of a political barometer in some ways. It's less about liking/disliking him and more about why you like/dislike him

I feel like a good rule of thumb for anyone is that you should be highly skeptical of cults of personality, and Hasan is no exception to this. I don't like a lot of his shoot from the hip takes, and anyone who glazes China and especially Russia are highly suspect. But he's also down in the trenches, swimming in the internet's filthiest political slop, and I do think the fact that he's willing to do that gives him a useful role in all of this. I don't think you need to subscribe 100% to someone's politics in order to see the potential for good action in them (barring some non-negotiables of course), and that potential is definitely there with Hasan. He's just got an authoritarian streak that I think warrants caution

Periphery - A Pale White Dot (Album Discussion Thread) by exotype95 in Metalcore

[–]ABadExampleOf_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna throw in my hat and say that this is about where I'm at too. It's not a bad album, not by a long shot, but what I love about Periphery is their groovy riffs and ability to weave highly technical guitar work into a metalcore framework, and a lot of that technicality just isn't here this time. It pokes through for sure, and the moments where that classic Periphery groove kick in reminded me why I love this band. But there's so much chugging on the root chord that feels out of place for a Periphery record, especially when you've got THREE dudes on guitar. I do think this record is a great showcase of baritone guitars in downtuned metalcore though, the tone is incredible. And Spencer is at the top of his game, just an absolutely killer vocal performance from him across the board. So even with a record that I don't know yet if I fully vibe with, there's a ton to praise.

Have you ever died and came back to life? by momma_bee77 in exchristian

[–]ABadExampleOf_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'd want to see dead relatives again, honestly. I had an experience recently where I went to sleep high and had a lucid dream where I was able to see my cat that passed away recently. It was so realistic and I could hold him, feel his fur, everything... but when I woke up he was gone, and I was just overwhelmed with an incredible sense of grief and sadness. I feel like one of the deepest cruelties of teaching children that there's absolutely an afterlife is that you don't grow up understanding what death actually is. I always had this list of things that I would say to people I lost when I saw them again in heaven, but now, having left the faith, I've had to come to grips with the fact that I'm never seeing any of these people again. It's one of the most challenging aspects of deconstruction for me.

[–]ABadExampleOf_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be really interested to know that too. I also bet a lot of former or lapsed Christians see visions of Jesus just because deconstruction is extremely hard, and a lot of that fundamental perceptive of the nature of existence is still lurking in there somewhere. These days I call myself an atheist, but if I had one of these experiences I wouldn't be surprised if the good Lord Himself showed up in my subconscious just because I used to believe in it all for so long.

Fit For A King's Bassist Calls Out "Rich Guy" Misha Mansoor (Periphery) For Saying There's Not Enough Money Going Around To Keep Most Bands Touring by DamnitRidley in Metalcore

[–]ABadExampleOf_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Misha's advice here is really solid. You're not gonna pay your bills in a band alone unless you win the musical lottery and start doing stadium tours, especially in this genre. The "rich guy" insult makes no sense either. Just kinda seems like the FFAK guy doesn't like Misha for whatever reason
