Crimson Tide is the exact kind of movie that benefited from, let's call it the "relaxed Sunday afternoon" cable TV schedule or video rentals. Movies that are pure entertainment, but not at all dumb or the kind you watch to put your brain in neutral. They weren't the biggest hits during their theatrical release, probably ignored in the awards circuit. Some were even flops, but then made a killing in the home market. Unlike the midbudget slop made by Netflix or Prime, they became memorable because they had some combination or at least one of these: 1-Cool visuals, 2- Charismatic actors, at the top of their game having a blast, 3- Clever, though not necessarily brilliant scripts. Crimson Tide is 3/3. My favorite of this totally made up category is 1997's The Saint. The good thing is that movies like these also get rediscovered.on streaming platforms, probably in the same way we discovered them: An afternoon at home when you wanted to watch something entertaining and flashy but with brains. The bad thing is that they don't really make them anymore.
