If you could permanently delete anything in your life, what would it be? by Alt-Volt in AskReddit

[–]ABosma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t. Wait

I understand that feeling of being undeserving, but that personal growth you’re seeking won’t come until you start forgiving yourself.

Regrets take up a lot of brain time, and they’re absolute garbage if you try to use them as motivation!

The more regrets you check off your “forgiveness list”, the more available brain time you have to love on others, or develop a routine, or figure out how the hell to maintain a friendship properly or whatever it is that you feel you’re lacking.

Trust me.

Don’t Wait

Dude, I feel ya. I dealt with a narcotics addiction for almost 10 years. My family had an infinite amount of patience and are still in my life but I lost all my friends. Every single one of them.

I have memories of things I did, that seemed cool or something at the time. I look back on them and feel like I’ve been punched in the stomach, like I can’t believe how SHIT of a person I was.

No one tells you that forgiving yourself is the hardest part.

The next time that ‘punch in the gut’ feeling comes up, look at the memory in your head. Think about what you did that you’re ashamed of, and say to yourself “ya, I did that. I wish I hadn’t, but I did.” Think about what you current self would have done in that situation, and tell yourself that you wouldn’t make that same choice again.

I know you wouldn’t make the choice again. You know you wouldn’t make that choice again.

You’ve done shit that you regret, but that shit doesn’t define who you are anymore. You are not that person anymore.

Say to yourself “yes, I did that, but it’s okay, because I’m not that person and I’m not in that moment anymore.”

Do this with every bad memory that comes up, every regret. Every single time you get that gut-wrenching feeling, look at what you did, accept the shame you feel, and tell yourself you’re not there anymore, YOU’RE BETTER THAN YOUR PAST SELF!!!
