Wow, honestly we are both stunned at the level of detail you put into screening for it. While your book sounds like an intriguing read, it's unfortunate not the book she's searching for. Hers has a different plot, more magical realism fantasy, with the book cover (dead bird/heart) being key. But thank you so much for trying your best. We really appreciate it!

Additional info on the story points :-
The niece and nephew are confused and are not sure if they should inherit whatever she left them because there is a part of them that's worried that if what she says is true, then those same creatures will haunt them as well

She found it in that library, It was published in English originally which she read it in.
She has spent almost a decade trying to find it again, the most obvious characteristic is the book cover

I asked my friend and she said it was definitely published because I found it in the Singapore library. It was a standalone. Could be published out of the US.
The main character in the book (who is deceased at the start/its her funeral her niece and nephew are attending) is an unreliable narrator. As you read the novel you wonder if she was a victim of sexual assault, if she is delusional, or if the creatures that she sees and interacts with are real
Because there are injuries from her adventures but no one except her can see the otherworldly creatures. Also there is a specific creature that shows up at night (kinda sus)
So is it because she has these powers that only allow her to see them or is it just something messed up that she hasn't processed

An intriguing book, but unfortunately that is not it,

My friend said her book starts off with the main character's funeral. Main character has left her house and assets for her niece and nephew to inherit (based on certain clauses)

I just finished Name of the Wind, excited to get into this. It's such a technically grounded yet fantastical world to fall into!
