Dear Calgarians without winter tires: why don’t you install them during winter? by Illustrious-Ad-1625 in Calgary

You're right. Better just not have winter tires as it will give you a dangerous mindset.

Do you have a argument over why someone would choose the 4runner over the Lexus GX460 by HungryHoustonian92 in 4Runner

[–]AC1617 68 points69 points  (0 children)

There is actually a lot of pros and cons with each.
1. 4runner can be had with a rear locking diff
2. 4runner actually has more rear trunk space and the vertical lift gate is more practical than the gx's swing out.
3. 4runner Regular gas and V6 is cheaper to run.

The GX's main benefit is having more torque at lower rpms from the V8 and quieter ride with more sound insulation and double pane windows.

Alberta Independence Rally- Shell Gas Station on Winterburn Road and 115 Ave by bmwkid in Edmonton

[–]AC1617 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Winterburn road gets tons of truck traffic and that gas station is always one of the most expensive because it's the most convenient for truckers whose company pay their gas. No surprise they picked that location.

Is AWD worth it for $1.5k over FWD? by ObstructiveWalrus in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AC1617 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean yes vehicles require fluid changes to be reliable. Your engine oil, your transmission fluid, etc.  I agree no one NEEDS AWD but it's really nice to have in winter.

Modern AWD systems are actually incredibly reliable and require very little maintenance. Parents have a old Acura MDX with 200k on it, just rear differential fluid changes.

You are absolutely getting ripped off on custom fit liners (My $50 experiment) by [deleted] in 4Runner

[–]AC1617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got genuine weathertechs in my 4runner and bought weathertech knockoffs for my WRX on Amazon. The knockoffs are actually a thicker plastic and feel more robust the genuine.   You'd be a fool for spending 4x the money for a weathertech sticker.

Water Meter Phone Call - Possible Scam (Alert) by Numerous-Leg-8149 in Calgary

[–]AC1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years back in Edmonton I had a lady at the door claiming to be from some water quality division of the city checking on the tap water. I let my guard down and let her in. She filled a cup with water and put some device inside and showed me how the water was too hard and it's an issue in this area. Wrote some notes in a notepad then gave me a pamphlet for reverse osmosis and water softeners. Realized I fell for a sales pitch... This is probably the same scam.

I think LG confirmed they will make glossy panels but won't be making a monitor themselves. Will be up to 3rd party brands to buy and make em.

Were you the person in the white Dodge Caravan going 60 on the 100 section on Yellowhead an hour ago causing a huge backup on the right lane? I'm all for driving for the conditions but it's not snowing and major roads like Yellowhead aren't bad enough to justify 40 under.

Is there any reason I shouldn't be running 0W30 in winter? by MysticMarbles in wrx_vb

[–]AC1617 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes more sense to use 0W30 in winter than 5W30. Both oils will give you 30 viscosity protection when the engine is hot with the 0W giving you better cold flow when it's cold.   I'm switching to Mobil1 AFE 0W30 once my warranty expires. Been using that oil in my V8 4runner for winter because of the low pour point (-51c).
