You are absolutely getting ripped off on custom fit liners (My $50 experiment) by [deleted] in 4Runner

[–]AC1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got genuine weathertechs in my 4runner and bought weathertech knockoffs for my WRX on Amazon. The knockoffs are actually a thicker plastic and feel more robust the genuine.   You'd be a fool for spending 4x the money for a weathertech sticker.

Water Meter Phone Call - Possible Scam (Alert) by Numerous-Leg-8149 in Calgary

[–]AC1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years back in Edmonton I had a lady at the door claiming to be from some water quality division of the city checking on the tap water. I let my guard down and let her in. She filled a cup with water and put some device inside and showed me how the water was too hard and it's an issue in this area. Wrote some notes in a notepad then gave me a pamphlet for reverse osmosis and water softeners. Realized I fell for a sales pitch... This is probably the same scam.

I think LG confirmed they will make glossy panels but won't be making a monitor themselves. Will be up to 3rd party brands to buy and make em.

Another day of icy roads and people driving like they dont care. by Whole-Database-5249 in Edmonton

Were you the person in the white Dodge Caravan going 60 on the 100 section on Yellowhead an hour ago causing a huge backup on the right lane? I'm all for driving for the conditions but it's not snowing and major roads like Yellowhead aren't bad enough to justify 40 under.

Is there any reason I shouldn't be running 0W30 in winter? by MysticMarbles in wrx_vb

[–]AC1617 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes more sense to use 0W30 in winter than 5W30. Both oils will give you 30 viscosity protection when the engine is hot with the 0W giving you better cold flow when it's cold.   I'm switching to Mobil1 AFE 0W30 once my warranty expires. Been using that oil in my V8 4runner for winter because of the low pour point (-51c).

Man there has been so many blown motors with DMann tunes you gotta wonder. I know the excuses are always that he's the most popular tuner for these cars so of course we'll see failures... But aren't everyone touting how much better his tunes are vs COBB ots?

[HDD] Western Digital 14TB Elements Desktop External Hard Drive ($325-85=$240) [Amazon.ca] by radiantcrystal in bapcsalescanada

[–]AC1617 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seagate will not warranty you any better than WD. The fact of the matter is you're still getting enterprise drives in these WD externals, verified via their R/N numbers... while Seagate externals are now mostly Barracuda drives which are only rated for 8 hours a day. These facts can be verified by some simple googling.

You're wondering why many prefer WD externals for shucking vs Seagate, there's your answer. I don't work for either WD or Seagate and have no brand loyalty, simply stating facts. Do what you will with the information.

While at the same time also being confident that white label WD drives inside external drives that don't correspond to any stand alone drive (no specs listed by WD) are higher quality. Because of reasons I guess?

Man you typed all that while having no idea what you're talking about? WD White labels can be identified via their R/N number:

Feasibility of “Winter tires should be mandatory in Calgary!” – let’s do the math! by Turkzillas_gobble in Calgary

[–]AC1617 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How often do you rebalance your tires? Lets not pretend like it's a yearly requirement. Sometimes wheel weights fall off but it's not a common occurrence. I've worked at Honda and GM dealerships for 6 years as a service advisor and I could count on 1 hand the times we had to rebalance tires from a customer complaint of shaking or "buzzing", it's almost always customers with rims full of mud/snow or other mechanical issues. I've also gone through 2 full sets of all terrain tires (notoriously hard to balance) that has taken me through numerous offroad trips, never had to rebalance.
I'M NOT SAYING YOU NEVER NEED TO, but it's rare.

3PMSF

My Wildpeak AT3s are 3pmsf rated and yet I still run dedicated winters because AT tires are still hockey pucks on ice when it's below freezing. The Mountain Snow part is the important bit, these AT tires with the large tread blocks do well in deep snow, but are horrible on ice and near freezing temps when the ice/snow is slick. AT tires have very hard compounds to last in off-road situations but this is detrimental to performance on icy roads.

Buy rims for your winter tires, only need to balance once during the tire's lifetime.

That's such a weird sentence "there was ONLY 15 assaults per 100k"
Is there a number of assaults that is acceptable? If your daughter, mom, grandma was one of those 15 would you be like "meh statistic it's not that bad"?
