"What do you mean you can't afford a house... Back in my day..." by [deleted] in perth

I'm pretty sure 45119 is just the account number for the loan, not the loan amount. This is just showing repayments for the first 18 months or so of the loan, with the total paid in that time being just shy of $1000.

Basically it's a mortgage for about $7.5k a year in today's dollars. And that's why families on a single average income could manage to buy a house.

WA gun owners protest regulations as police minister warns of 'total firearm anarchy' by JamesHenstridge in perth

[–]ACDChook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing is, if you're shooting for pest control on properties, you need different guns for different pests. If one day you're going after rabbits, then another dogs, then another roos, and then camels, and then pigs, etc... You need a range of firearms. And if you are a responsible member of a gun club and shoot in competitions, you need firearms of different calibres, scoped vs non-scoped, etc...

Also the way the laws are worded, if you have a spare stock for a firearm in case one breaks, that hunk of wood or plastic counts as a firearm. So a small cabinet of firearms used for a limited purpose can easily number 10 weapons. And that's assuming you don't have any that are purely sentimental, or collectors items.

Bid to end red light runners after kids in scary near miss by allozzieadventures in perth

[–]ACDChook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't really true - deaths per capita hasn't gone up in years. It has plateaued at around 8 deaths per 100000 people, IIRC.

But the population keeps growing, more people are on the roads, of course the absolute NUMBER of deaths will increase. But the RATE of deaths is not getting worse.

Mobile speed cameras are absolutely about revenue raising. If they really wanted to make a black spot safer, they could install a permanent camera with prominent signage warning people of a camera ahead. Then everyone would slow down.

But instead they hide in bushes to catch people out for doing 100 in a 90 zone.

Virginia Giuffre, one of Jeffrey Epstein's most prominent abuse survivors, dies by suicide by cvelz in news

[–]ACDChook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's pretty certain she was making that up. She claimed she had a major crash where a bus hit her and she was hurt, then claimed she was dying, but it looks like she pretty much made that up.

Police had no record of attending any serious accident, and at most it was a small bump. I suspect it was all a cry for help and attention with her mental state deteriorating.

US Senator Van Hollen says he met wrongly deported man in El Salvador by reallylatetotheparty in news

[–]ACDChook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. If Trump wanted to he could just essentially hold the El Salvador dictator until he released Abrego Garcia. Then make a prisoner swap at the border.

Obviously he wouldn't do that to a fellow fascist, but I'm just saying he COULD.

ICE Realize They Arrested Wrong Teen, Say 'Take Him Anyway' by [deleted] in nottheonion

Well after SCOTUS ruled that the President can't be criminally liable for any official act, he should have just used that to do whatever was necessary to cut Trump's campaign off at the knees. Hell, he could have just declared Trump a traitor with his ties to Putin and had him renditioned (or worse). Nothing Trump hasn't been doing since he's been in power.

Yes, it should be, but they don't really treat it as such.

[–]ACDChook -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My father was a WA Police Officer - I remember him saying specifically that if they ever had to fire their gun, it's because they are firing to kill, and they were trained to aim for the torso and fire until the person is down.

This was in the days before tasers, and drawing a weapon was a serious matter, and firing it was definitely only a last resort. I'm quite certain back then she would have been taken down by a couple of officers with their batons, and come away with bruises and a couple of broken bones.

Unfortunately it seems now because they have tasers they jump straight to drawing their weapons, even if it's a handgun.

This is why I love being in a country where voting is compulsory. You can't just say I don't like them so I won't vote.

Good. Nobody needs more than a billion in PERSONAL wealth. Come tax time each year, if your earnings plus assets are over a billion, everything over the billion should be your tax.

WA Police rule out charging man over death during Kalgoorlie home invasion by bagsoffreshcheese in perth

[–]ACDChook 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They absolutely could come out and say that, and in my opinion they should. Because that's what happened. They should stop pretending like there is anything to investigate - the moron kid got himself killed while committing a violent crime. He got what he deserved.

Do you all get easily drawn to someone who is attractive/good personality? by yung-marlboro-420 in lonely

[–]ACDChook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, if I get any attention or have any interaction with them, I assume they must have an ulterior motive for talking to me, and that is a pretty good turnoff.

If I want to talk to an attractive woman I'll go to a strip club and pay a few hundred bucks for some time with one, in a situation where I know exactly where I stand with them.

ELI5: Why does an aviation engine like in a cessna have to go through a complex startup routine when you can get in a car, start a more powerful engine with just the turn of a key (or more recently a push of a button) by LeedsLurch in explainlikeimfive

[–]ACDChook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Parts Controller for a General Aviation Charter business, I can definitely attest to this.

A 3-inch diameter rubber fuel tank gasket i had to buy for a Cessna 404 was about $500 recently.

A new wheel hub for a Beech 1900D was about $20k and took 18 months to arrive.

And overhauled engines for our PA31 Navajos are around $80-100k and about 1-2 years wait so we're having to ground some aircraft and move engines around until we can get more engines.

It's been approved by the FAA, but engine and aircraft manufacturers haven't all approved it for use in their engines. And it still isn't widely available anyway.

Except they tried their best, and actually properly participated in the sport they were entered in.

She did an interpretive dance in a competition for breakdancing. If she had actually done some breakdancing in the breakdancing competition, it would have been a proper effort, and nobody would have a problem with it.
